Some valuable work that merits special mention as pertaining to this locality has been done by one of our members, Mrs. Chas. W. Baker, through whose untiring efforts the Society has now in typewritten form extracts from the official county records relating to the property of the Columbia Baptist Church and its successor the Duck Creek Church, and what is more important there are copies of the inscriptions on all the tombstones and fraginents now in these two early burial grounds. As each year marks the gradual decay or wanton destruction of these 'gravestones, this work of preserving their inscriptions can readily be appreciated. There are also copies of official records relating to Fort Washington, the originals of which are preserved in the State Depart- ment at Washington, and last is some interesting data concerning the families of Benj. Stites and Ephraim Kibbey.
Mrs. John A. Gano has sent us a few early documents ; two muster rolls of militia volunteers from the Territory Northwest of the river Ohio, 1792; original roll of names of Company D, Sixth Regiment, U. S. I., this has no date but probably the war of 1812; two muster rolls of New York militia 1814 and 1815; and a pay roll of a Maine company of drafted militia called into service in 1839.
The manuscripts containing much original matter and extremely interesting for publication by the Society are the Hatch Papers, presented by Mrs. Florence J. King, of Riverside, Cincinnati. The earlier papers are written by Major William Stanley, one of the first settlers here. There is a small diary, clearly and well written. It opens November, 1790, on his first arrival in Cincinnati in company with Captain Strong. Here he began his business career as clerk in the store of Strong & Bartle; the diary continues its records to February, 1810, and narrates the various movements of Mr. Stanley during the intervening years. In 1793 he enters into a business partnership with Daniel Gano and John Stites Gano in Columbia, which continues for several years. A brief mention of his courtship and marriage to Miss Sally. Howell, of North Bend, is among the entertaining entries. Another paper written in 1811 is descriptive of all his property in this vicinity, which was considerable, likewise some observations and explanation of his business at that time. Mrs. King has included in her gift an oil portrait of William Stanley.
The greater part of this manuscript collection was written by Mr. William Stanley Hatch, who for many years was a prominent citizen of Cincinnati. He came here in 1804 when a youth of fourteen years, entered the store of his uncle, William Stanley, continued in the

mercantile business with occasional intervals until 1832. Served in the war of 1812 ; was state senator for several terms, and in 1859 retired !o private life, spending the remainder of his years in the quiet of his beautiful country home in Riverside. During this period he wrote the interesting sketches now in the Society's possession. The first is titled : "Some Incidents in the Life of William S. Hatch in Cincinnati, 1804 to 1844 and 1872." The descriptions in this sketch of the town in its early days make a realistic picture of the people in their social life and customs. With great precision he tells of the location of each business house and tavern, the postoffice, the court house, and the race or fair grounds ; he gives the style, material and color of many houses. Then there is the advent of the dramatic entertainments, followed by the organization of the Thespian Society, when he tells of the young men who were the actors. Much is said of the war of 1812, and of the way of announcing victories by the town crier, who with bell in hand and mounted, rides through the streets calling out the latest war news. I can but touch upon the incidents here narrated, in fact it is like walking the streets of Cincinnati a hundred years ago.
Another manuscript describes Lafayette's visit to Cincinnati in 1825. This account is full of interest, From his general acquaintance with every one in town the place assigned to the writer at the public ball was by the side of the distinguished visitor to introduce each guest. Mr. Hatch gives a graphic account of the four days' festivities and also of Lafayette's personal appearance, dress and inanners.
A third equally attractive paper tells of Aaron Burr coming to Cin- cinnati in 1805, and here again we have the same careful detail of inci- dents connected with his stay in town. The earthquake of 1811, and a comet of great brilliancy in the same year form the subject of another paper.
There are pencil notes made on the march of the Northwestern Army in the war of 1812. A notebook records a trip to the eastern States in 1817, which simply gives the miles traveled between each point, and his expense account on the way. An orderly book of Capt. Jacob Slough's from March 1 to June 3, 1793, headquarters at Legion- ville and Hobson's choice, is in the collection.
Fifteen letters are also here from prominent persons, such as S. P. Chase, Ethan Allen Brown, Lewis Cass and others, Finally there are very many deeds and indentures relating to property about here, from the time of John Cleves Symmes to those of recent years, and a large number of papers concerning lands in Kentucky, besides a miscellaneous lot of documents, but space will not admit of a more extended notice of these papers.
From Nelson W. Evans, Esq., of Portsmouth, O., we have received several papers ; a list of persons in Capt. Wm. Kendall's Troop of Horse, August 3, 1813 ; a paper by General Darlington, and a proclamia- tion by General Duncan McArthur, 1814.
As trustee of the Jacob Hoffner estate, Mr. Victor Abraham has given an indenture of the apprenticeship of Jacob Hoffner when seven-

teen years old to Gabriel Hubble, also several other documents from the lofner estate.
Mr. Alexander Hill has sent to the library a manuscript that had been left with The Robert Clarke Company some years ago for publica- tion. This is one of the few survivals of the great fire of two years ago. The correspondence regarding it is lost, and the firm have no knowledge now of the author. The paper is entitled, "A Brief Record of Events leading directly and indirectly to the Discovery and Settlement of North America." As the greater part of this manuscript relates to the settlement of Ohio and as there is evidence of it having been written by an Ohio man, it may prove of historic value to this Society.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT.
Year Ending December 5, 1904.
It is now three years since your Society changed its home and moved its possessions to Van Wormer Hall. Except possibly on the score of accessibility, the past year has added confirmation of the wis- dom of your removal from Garfield Place. The safety of your library in its present quarters should alone outweigh all other considerations.
The year has been one of normal growth and progress for your Society, and comparatively uneventful.
The Treasurer's report shows the receipt, free of taxes, of $800 1
rental from your tenant, Mr. Robertson, in Garfield Place.
Through the liberality of Miss Jane C. Neave, and others, the Binding Fund has been increased during the last twelve months by between $600 and $700.
Last May we received the military library of the late General Henry Martyn Cist presented by his family. The particulars of this gift will be found in the Librarian's report.
A valuable accession to our manuscripts came in April, by the gift of Mrs. Kate Campbell Minor, of Hamilton, Ohio, Mrs. Minor is a granddaughter of John Reily, said to have kept the first school in the region northwest of the Ohio River, who was Clerk of the Territorial House of Representatives, and a member of the Convention of 1802, at Chillicothe, which framed the first constitution for the State of Ohio, and prominently identified with the early history of this city and county. We are indebted to Col. D. W. McClung for his kind offices in securing this gift. This Reily collection includes the original journal of the constitutional convention, in the handwriting of Reily as clerk thereof, and much other interesting and valuable matter, for a more extended reference to which I beg to refer to Mrs. Lord's report.
Five hundred dollars more on account of the Margaret R. King bequest has been paid by her executors during the past year, making $5000 in all that your Society has received of Mrs. King's bequest. I am advised that a further payment will soon be made.
In the interest of preserving a historical landmark, your President appeared before a Committee of the City Council, and argued against the destruction of the Lytle Homestead, in Lawrence Street, for park purposes.
In October the Executive Board learned with regret that Mr. Charles J. Livingood, for five years the Treasurer of your Society, had been obliged to go abroad on account of ill-health. Upon his resignation Mr. Chatfield consented to assume the duties of Treasurer, leaving vacant the office of Corresponding Secretary, which the Board filled by electing Mr. Charles T. Greve. Mr. Livingood hopes to return in one

or at most two years. This Society will miss his intelligent service and affectionate interest. No one of those who have in recent years assumed the care of your Society has done more for its welfare, both in practical work and in cultivating and spreading the true spirit for which your Society stands, than Mr. Livingood. We hope for him a speedy recovery, and for the Society his early return to the Board.
On the recent occasion of the inauguration of Dr. Dabney as President of the University of Cincinnati, your Society was officially represented by Mr. Albert H. Chatfield and Mrs. T. I. A. Greve.
For the more convenient closing of the Treasurer's accounts, the fiscal year of the Society has been changed so as to begin on the 1st day of December in each year, and close with the 30th of November of the following year.
