ANNUAL REPORTS

OF THE

Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio

FOR 1893

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.

CINCINNATI, December 4, 1893.

During the year ending with this date the accessions to the library have been as follows :

Bound volumes 722

Pamphlets 1,829

Bound volumes of newspapers. 3

Unbound volumes of newspapers. 6

Atlases 2

Maps

26

Manuscripts, volumes.

5

TOTAL

2,593

The library now contains 12,835 volumes and 54,300 pamphlets. The number of contributors has been 141. Of the books added, 679 were gifts, and 43 volumes and 9 pamphlets were purchased from the income of the Elizabeth Haven Appleton fund.

Hon. John A. Gano presented to the Society the architect's plans of the Ohio State Building at the Columbian Exposition. These plans, fifteen in number, are a pleasing memento of Ohio's part in the World's Fair.

Robert Clarke, Esq., contributed a manuscript of great historical

value and interest, a letter written by John Cleves Symmes to Dr. Elias Boudinot, a member of the Federal Congress, dated Northbend, Jan. 12, 1792. It relates to the defeat of General Arthur St. Clair by the Indians in the campaign of 1791. The letter is long, clearly written and remarkably well preserved.

The most important gift to the cabinets is a portrait of Dr. Charles Woodward, of Cincinnati, presented by the family of Henry Lewis.

Two important acquisitions of family papers have been made by the Society the past year : the Cranch papers, the gift of Miss Emma Cranch, being for the greater part letters and documents of her grand- father, Judge William Cranch, of Washington; and the Walker papers, the gift of Miss Annie Walker, comprising the many letters and manu- scripts of her father, Judge Timothy Walker.

Among the Cranch papers are fifty-eight letters, received by Judge Cranch, and his letter-book, containing copies of business letters written by him, 1806-1809. There is a letter, 1817, from Abigail Adams, wife of President John Adams, and aunt of the recipient, not included in her published volumes of letters; a series of letters written by Thomas B. Adams, son of John Adams, 1791-1815; a letter written by Richard Cranch to his brother in England, 1748; and two letters from the late Edward P. Cranch to his father, written from Cincinnati in the height of the Harrison presidential campaign of 1840.

There are also the many memoranda of Judge William Cranch for his " Memoir of the Life, Character and Writings of John Adams," and the original manuscript of the same. The Society had already the published pamphlet of this Memoir.

Lastly, a very miscellaneous collection of legal documents, "requi- sitions," drafts of bills of various bodies, and a few ancient programs and "Theses " of Harvard College, one of 1787, and the others, early in the current century.

The Cranch papers have been put in order and are open to in- spection.

The Walker papers are now arranging and will be classified and ready for consultation early in the coming year. This collection is rich in letters. It is enough for the present to name a few of the writers.

7

Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio.

There are letters from R. C. Schenck, S. P. Chase, Bellamy Storer, O. M. Spencer, Joseph Story, J. G. Palfrey, Josiah Quincy (1829), Louis Agassiz, George Bancroft, James Walker, George Ticknor, Howard Crosby, Jared Sparks, Harriet Martineau, Pierre Soulé, Edward Everett, Charles Sumner, Daniel Webster.

A more minute account of these letters and of the other manuscripts of the Walker papers will be given in the next annual report.

A list of the contributions with the donors' names is appended.

ANNUAL REPORTS

OF THE

Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio

FOR 1894.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.

CINCINNATI, December 3, 1894.

During the year ending with this date the accessions to the library have been as follows :

Bound volumes.

317

Pamphlets. 1,291

Unbound volumes of newspapers. . 4

Maps ..

25

Manuscript volumes

8

Letters.

14

Total 1,659

The library now contains 13,090 bound volumes and 54,800 pam- phlets. Of the books received 271 were gifts and 46 were purchased from the income of the Elizabeth Haven Appleton Fund. Contribu- tions have been received from 153 different sources. Thirty-nine books and one pamphlet were taken out, and all have been returned.

It is gratifying to state that the number of contributions shows an increase over any previous year, and that the gifts in the aggregate represent valuable acquisitions.

Special mention may be made of some of the accessions of the year.

The purchases from the Appleton Fund consist of twenty volumes of Ohio county histories and six of biographies, the other twenty volumes are recent publications of American history more general in character.

From the different departments of the United States Government

we continue to receive their publications. Among these an important folio volume, received from the Quartermaster-General, War Department, gives in colored plates the uniform of the Army of the United States from 1774 to 1889; this, with the Diplomatic Correspondence of the American Revolution, in six volumes, given by the State Department, forms an interesting study for the members of our many patriotic so- cieties.

The War of the Rebellion series has been kept up to date with latest issues of books and maps. Three volumes on the Sand Mounds and Shell Heaps in the St. Johns River, Fla., by C. B. Moore, have been given by the author; a new illustrated book on the Pottery and Porcelain of the United States, and a work called the "Grasshopper " in Lombard Street, London, dealing with banks and banking in early days, were donated. The Society has also received several volumes of family genealogies, some recent publications of biographies in pamphlet form; these, with the collections of historical societies and other miscel- laneous books and pamphlets, which can not now be noticed in detail, have added to the steady growth of the library.

In the last Annual Report mention was made of the "Walker Pa- pers, the gift of Miss Annie Walker, comprising the many letters and manuscripts of her father, Judge Timothy Walker." These papers have now been arranged and are open to inspection. Among them are let- ters from men prominent in Harvard College, such as Palfrey, Quincy, Agassiz, Story, Sparks, Bancroft, Walker, Ticknor; from men eminent in national or local politics, such as Everett, Chase, Storer, Schenck, Soulé, Sumner, Webster; letters from Dickens, Harriet Martineau and Macready.

There is a manuscript volume containing the college themes and forensics of Judge Walker, orations and lectures delivered upon various subjects, and a few extracts from his Journal (IS26-1830). There are papers relating to our own Society, to many institutions of Cincinnati, such as the Law School and College, the Mercantile Library, the College of Teachers and the Lyceum. There are briefs, lectures delivered to the Law School, political addresses, circulars relating to the World's Fair of 1853, newspaper clippings in regard to matters in which Judge Walker had part. Among these last may be mentioned the "Summons Trial" of 1851, the "So-called Bedini Riot" of 1854, and the "Slave Trial " of 1855-

In fact from this collection might be compiled almost a complete account of Judge Walker's laborious life from early manhood to his un- timely death, when he was, perhaps, Cincinnati's foremost citizen.

Contributors of the year just ended have added some letters of in- verest by men of note.

Seven were written by Hiram Powers to his friend Nicholas Long- worth. during his life in Florence, Italy, 1856-1858, another to the same is from W. W. Fosdick, 1858, one letter by Abraham Lincoln to the Secretary of the Navy, 1862, a letter by R. B. Hayes, while Governor of Ohio, 1870, to Julius Dexter, and three letters written by Edw. F. Noyes to Francis B. Lord during the War of the Rebellion, 1861-6.4.

The Woman's Columbian Exposition Association of Cincinnati pre- sented to this Society its collection of record books, reports, badge, ribbon of award and other objects of interest in its possession, to be pre- served in the historical rooms as a record of the work accomplished by the women who represented our city in the great Exposition.
