ANNUAL REPORT

of the

Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio

For 1905.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.

Cincinnati, December 4, 1905. Mr. President and Members of the Society.

At the end of the second month of the year now closing your former librarian, Mrs. Catherine W. Lord, resigned the charge of your library into my care, after explaining with much courtesy and kindness, its general condition, its various collections and the routine work necessary to be done.

I sincerely hope that the kindly feeling and good will manifested toward the old librarian will be extended to the new one so long as she remains in charge, and, also, that the latter may be afforded an oppor- tunity in the coming year to cooperate with all the members-not alone the executive board-in an endeavor to advance the interests of this Society.

I have the honor to submit the following report for the year ending Dec. 4, 1905:

, The accessions to the library have been 436 volumes, 1019 pamphlets, 4 maps, 13 manuscripts, and 163 miscellanies. Of these volumes 359 were donated and the remaining 67 were acquired by purchase, 17 volumes from the general fund of the Society, 48 volumes from the Appleton fund, and 2 volumes from the Colonial Dames Society fund. Also from the Appleton fund there were purchased 91 pamphlets and 3 maps. The Annual Report of 1904 shows that the library contained 18045 volumies and 66000 pamphlets. These with the present year's accessions form a total of 18481 volumes and 67019 pamphlets, or 85500 titles.

On account of age and rarity probably the most interesting books lately acquired are two old works of the celebrated Samuel Wesley; the title of one is "THE LIFE OF OUR Blessed Lord & Saviour JESUS CHRIST, AN HEROIC POEM." It is a second edition revised by the author and improved with the addition of a map of the "Holy-Land" and a "Table of Contents." It has sixty copper plates by W. Faitborn and was printed in London in 1697. The other publication, consisting

of three volumes, is "The HISTORY of the Old and New TESTA- MENT Attempted IN VERSE: And Adorned with Three Hundred & Thirty SCULPTURES." This was printed in London in 1701. These volumes were presented by Mrs. Dale, the widow of John W. Dale.

Among the various accessions coming from a distance, bringing with them the generous encouragement of absent friends, is "The Private Journal of Aaron Burr", a reprint in full from the original manuscript in the library of Mr. Wm. K. Bixby of St. Louis, who presented it to the Society.

The American Jewish Historical Association, by the request of the Rev. Dr. Philipson, has sent to the library 11 volumes of their publica- .tions with the information that the name of this Society is on their free list.

Other interesting accessions are several old maps; 2 of Ohio bear- ing dates of 1820 and 1838, and one of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois (the year not specified but obviously of early date), and a little New England Primer, interesting on account of being published in our own city in 1831.

There has been an effort made by the purchasing committee to complete our valuable set of the New England Historical Register by the purchase of several expensive volumes. "We lack only a few more to make, the set perfect.

Mr. James W. T. Scott of Philadelphia, has given this Society a portrait in oil, 12/2 x 16/2 inches in size, of his father James M. Scott, who was a leading actor in his day and was particularly successful in the character of "Long Tom Coffin" in "The Pilot." He was a resi- dent of this city from 1833 to 1845 and appeared on the stage here as early as 1820. The old National theatre was built for him and James Thorne in 1837. Mr. Scott was born in Hartford, Conn., Nov. 30, 1799, and died in New York, Feb. 24, 1849. His remains lie in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia. It increases the interest in this painting to learn that it is the work of William H. Powell, when about fourteen years of age, while a scene painter at the National theatre during the management of Scott & Thorne.

An oil painting of William Woodward, similar to one in the chapel of the Woodward High School (presented in 1845), has been given by Mrs. Dale, who states that it was given to her grandmother by Mr. Seth Foster of Clifton. Accompanying this portrait was a pen and ink sketch of "Old Woodward" school building drawu by Thomas Noble. We are further indebted to this generous donor for several hundred selected pamphlets and for a quaint old silver watch with its attached key and chain, which was once the property of William Woodward; the verge works, or the spindle of the watch-balance, shows it to have been made over one hundred years ago.

An Indian robe, a most exquisite specimen of Indian handiwork, given to the late Dr. Edward Rives of Cincinnati, by David McCoomb of the Regular Army. has lately been presented to this Society by his widow, Mrs. Edward Rives, now of Hillsboro, O:

Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio.

A few manuscripts have been acquired this year:

From Miss Elizabeth D. Storer,

Six letters of Judge Bellamy Storer written to Judge Barrett Porter of Port- land. Me., 1817-1820.

Letter of Maj. Gen. G. Weitzel to Judge B. Storer.

Letter of Gor. R. B. Hayes to Judge B. Storer.

Letter of Sen. John Sherman to Judge B. Stocer.

Letter of N. W. Evans (of Portsmouth. O.' to Judge B. Storer.

Letter of thanks from the trustees of the Holy Congregation of the Children of Israel, Cincinnati, 1853, to Judge B. Storer.

From Mr. Joseph W'ilby,

Letter of Thomas Corwin. Letter of Millard Fillmore.

Two small books containing the names of subscribers to a fund for the erection of a Soldiers' Monument in Spring Grove, 1865, the amount subscribed by each and the minutes of the meetings as reported by the secretary, A. S. Winslow, were presented by Mr. John F. Winslow.

Other items of interest received are: Official souvenir medal of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and a certificate of stock of the World's Columbian Exposition from Mr. F. D. Comstock; purse and silver half- dollar souvenir of the World's Columbian Exposition, 1893, from Mr. E. F. Bliss; twenty-seven counterfeit bank bills from Mr. D. L. James; copies of old newspapers, among which is the "College Mirror," pub- lished by John D. Schooley of Cincinnati, 1839, from Mr. J. W. T. Scott; forty-three photographs of scenes in and around Cincinnati, the work of the giver, Mr. A. O. Kramer; and a photograph of Gen. Geo. Rogers Clark, taken from a portrait painted by the artist Jewett, given by Mr. W. H. Behrens.

A large amount of time and labor has been expended in the library this year in an endeavor to re-arrange the volumes with a system which would make them more accessible and, consequently, more useful to readers. The old catalogue lost its usefulness when our collection was moved to its present quarters, and the Society arranged to have a new card catalogue made in the catalogue department of the library of the University of Cincinnati. Several thousand books were catalogued last year and the year previous, but the work was practically discontinued throughout this year, owing to insufficient force in that department. However, I have prepared, with the assistance of a typewriter, nearly 6000 cards for a shelf-list, which covers all the books included under the card catologue made by the cataloguers of the University, and have moved the greater portion of the entire library in order to place the catalogued volumes on the stacks in regular rotation to accord with the shelf-list, and have re-arranged and classified generally the most of the "books not yet catalogued.

Author-catalogues or Indexes of the King and Clark collections are under way and I hope to complete them soon. Over 1300 books, new and old, have received accession numbers and have been entered in the accession book this year. Fifty volumes have been bound and twenty- two repaired.

L. BELLE HAMLIN,

Librarian.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT.

The past year has not been so eventful as some in the life of your Society. It has, however, been a year of normal growth and prosperity along the lines of our charter purposes.

In January, Mrs. Catherine W. Lord, after serving as Librarian from the date of the annual meeting in December, 1886-a long and faithful service of over eighteen years-resigned because of her removal from Cincinnati.

On February 1st, Miss L. Belle Hamlin was elected to succeed Mrs. Lord as Librarian, and at once entered upon her duties.

The sum of a thousand dollars was paid to us in January by the Executors of Margaret Rives. King, completing the payment of the $6,000 named in the codicil of Mrs. King's will. The additional $4,000 of our legacy depends, as you will remember, upon the sale of certain real estate in the Northwest. in which, as the residue of her estate, we have a half interest.

In February, 1903, we arranged on favorable terms, with the Uni- versity of Cincinnati that it should make for us, while making for itself, a card catalogue of our books. The University has been unable to måke progress with that work, and comparatively few cards have been furnished to us. Therefore, in October, your Society resolved to go ahead with this card cataloguing independently of the University, as soon as a suitable person could be secured to do it.

Professor Whitcomb was authorized at the October meeting to pub- lish from our collections the letters of Hiram Powers to Nicholas Longworth.

Our Librarian has, at the suggestion of the Board, become a member of the Ohio Library Association.

The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Ohio paid you the compliment of inviting your President to deliver an address at its annual meeting, November 23rd.

Our Librarian reports an increase in the number of persons using our library. This increase is gratifying, both because it implies greater usefulness, and because it means diffusion of information as to the im- portance of our work and the value of our library. It is, I think, desir- able for a cause like ours to become widely known and generally understood.

There remain but four years more of our contract for the use of · tiiese quarters in The Van Wormer Building. We have lived here for just four years. Those years have proved the wisdomn, under all the circumstances, of the removal from Garfield Place. But it is my own firm conviction that the usefulness of this Society would be increased, and the convenience of its members and governing board greatly

served, by going back to town-to some centrally located building exclusively our own. Such a building of course must be fire proof and especially adapted for the housing. of a library like ours. This I am sure is the wish -- the hope-common to all of you. It may not be too soon then to give that hope expression. The idea should get a fair start in order to be followed by achievement. The four years will pass quickly. It is not a long time. We have had many devoted friends in the past who saw our needs and made provision for them. The idea of a permanent fire-proof home down town for this Society should be per- mitted to take possession of our minds and direct our energies.
