and is to be constructed within the present year. The city is growing rapidly as a wholesale and jobbing center, having at the present time ten large wholesale houses and also a ummber of important manufacturing industries. Four newspapers, the Capital (daily and weekly) and the S. MrMlester News, Choctaw Gazette and the Voice of the People (weekly, at- test the progress of the citizens. A fifty-ton ice and refrigerator plant. an iron foundry, two pressed brick plants. a large cotton compress and a cotton gin. a wagon and carriage factory. a large macaroni factory, planing mills, and the best electric light and tele- phone systems in the two territories prove that the city is well up in the march of modern progress. The bill now pending before Congress which designs to give this country a terri- torial form of government with the name of Jefferson Territory. names Sonth McAlester as the capital, and this bill is most likely to become a law. The management of municipal affairs is vested in a mayor and city council of eight members. two from each ward, and the public school sys- tem is controlled by a board of trus- tees elected by the people. There are a large number of very handsome modern residences in the city and a splendidly equipped modern hospital. 'The business structures will compare favorably with those of any other city, and in every particular the city is progressive and an inviting place for home seekers and investors. Tele- graph .- W.
