PREFACE.

Every Book, it is said, ought to have its Preface, and yet a Preface to a Directory, it seems to me, is like an Index to a Dictionary. A Directory is composed of three principal items, viz .: Names, Miscellaneous Records, and Advertisements ; all, as nearly as possible, arranged alpha- betically ; but custom demands a Preface, and custom must be obeyed.

The 23d Edition of "MCELROY's" Philadelphia City Directory for 1860, is, after a few days of unavoidable delay, presented to the public, and will receive, as its predecessors have, the com- mendations of those who think, and the condemnation of others who seem to have nothing else to do but to find fault.

The present edition of the Directory contains upward of 160,000 NAMES, exclusive of the street list, showing an increase over the edition of 1859, of about 32,000. In addition to the number of names in the 1110 pages of the Directory proper, 23,000 more have been added of the business part of the community-all carefully arranged under their appropriate headings.

To estimate the population of a City or State, on the basis of the number of lines published in a Directory, is simply absurd. No correct data are thereby afforded, and consequently, no correct result can follow.

The collection and proper arrangement of so large a number of names, required an amount of energy, labor and skill, only to be appreciated by those actually engaged in the work. Nor is it alone with the large number of names printed, we have to do; probably more than double that amount are returned by the canvassers. This mass, from all parts of the consolidated city, must all be assorted, alphabetically arranged, read carefully, removing the duplicates and triplicates, having, at the same time, strict regard to the proper spelling of the most difficult of all spelling,-that of proper names.

The canvassing and compiling of the Directory for 1860, was committed to the superintend- ence of MR. WM. H. BOYD, with a well-trained corps of canvassers, and thoroughly and long- experienced compilers ; the whole having, however, received a complete and attentive revision by the subscriber. The best evidence that can be afforded of the completeness of the task is in the increase of 32,000 names over the canvass of last year. How carefully this part of the work has been accomplished, the public will judge.

One Street List is given, containing the new and old names, conveniently arranged for refer- ence. A handsome colored Map also accompanies the work.

To enumerate the difficulties attendant on the collection and compilation of a large number of names and their proper classification, would be to repeat that which has been expressed by all publishers of similar works, in every city and town in the United States. It is only proper, therefore, to remark, that while their name is " legion," an earnest effort has been made to sur- mount them, and, it is believed, with an approximation to success. To say that errors have not occurred, would be to claim perfection for human infirmity, and to repudiate the lessons of experience.

My first Preface is written. Such as it is, it is submitted, with the work that has called it forth, to the generous indulgence of a highly honorable public, among whom I have spent more than thirty years of a somewhat matured life, and from the mass of whom I have received no little kindness.

A. MCELROY.
