[ 165 THE SEVEN SOUTHERN WARDS.
Lower Delaware Ward embraces the fpace comprehended between High and Walnut Streets, and between Front-ftreet and the river Dela- ware .- 1006 feet by a fpace of about 200 feet.
Chefnut Ward lies between High and Chefnut-ftreets, and between Front and Second-ftreets .- It is reported that this Ward was formerly conveyed in fee by Mr. Penn to his Coachman for rou Crowns, which he owed him .- It is 481 feet by 396 .- One hundred and twenty-five heads of families are recorded in this Work as living there, which, at fix perfons to a family, is 750. It is worthy of notice that the number of burials from this Ward in 1793 exactly agrees with a tenth of that number; and the total of the deaths in the city and liberties is very near a tenth of the whole number, as returned when the cenfus was taken in 1791.
Walnut Ward is contained between Chefnut and Walnut, and Front and Second-ftreets .- 475 feet by 396.
Middle Ward is between High and Chefnut-ftreets, extending from Se- cond-ftreet to the river Schulkill .- 481 feet by 10,440 feet.
South Ward is between Chefnut and Walnut-ftreets, and Second-ftreet and the river Schulkill .- 475 feet by 10,440 feet.
Dock Ward is between Walnut and Spruce-ftreets, and extends from river to river .- 820 feet by two miles.
New Market Ward is between Cedar and Spruce, and extends from river to river .- 1174 feet by two miles.

An INDEX,
By the help of which any Houfe-keeper, who lives in any of the Streets, Courts, Lanes or Alleys, mentioned in the foregoing fheets, may be found out by turning over to the page where the perfon refides: this method will be found much eafier than that purfued in the Old Di- rectories, as a great proportion of the Houfes in the City are not num- bered. The reader will fee the relative fituation of the perfon he wants to find out; who lives all around him; whether he is an inmate, the principal perfon in the houfe, and whether the name of the perfon he wants is that of a white perfon or of an African.
