The Methodift Epifcopal Church is built here, it is about eighty-five feet long and fixty feet wide, it was originally built by the Society called Reformed Germans, and fold by them to the Methodifts fome- time before the Revolution. When the British forces poffeffed them- felves of Philadelphia they pulled up the floors of this Church and converted it into a Riding fchool. The Officiating Minifler is the Ne- verend John M& Clafkey.
On the 18th of December, 1794, the commencement of the " Young Ladies Academy of Philadelphia," under the direction of John Poor, A. M. the principal, was held in this Church, the ufe of which he had obtained for that purpofe ; the Legiflatures of the Union and of Penn- fylvania were then in Seffion, and the City crouded with ftrangers of refpectability from all parts of the Continent. The members of the Houfe of Reprefentatives of the United States, the members of the Senate and Houfe of Reprefentatives of this State, the principal La- dies and Gentleman of the City attended, purfuant to invitation from the Principal; the Church was as full as it poffibly could be, the in- vitation being general, and accepted by all who could attend. The Young Ladies went through their literary exercifes with the greateft eclat : what a contraft this exercife muft make with that performed by the British and their horfes in this beautiful Church about feventeen years before.
