During these engagements about one-third of my com- mand was kept with the infantry guarding the right flank of our army. The remainder was engaged in these various actions. The battle of Newnan, where the heaviest fighting was done, and where the enemy were signally defeated and scattered, was fought by parts of the Ist, 24 and 4th Tennessee, Ist, 8th and 10th Confederate, 3d Arkansas, 8th and 11th Texas and 5th Georgia regiments, and 9th Tennessee but- talion.
