Galveston

Since that time a concrete sea wall 17 feet high and five miles in length has been bullt along the Gulf side of the city. Back of this sea wall was de- posited almost. 20,000,000 cubic yards of sand filling raising the grade of the city from the old level to that of the sea wall.

Every house and structure of every kind In the filled area was raised. A canal was dug through the city through which ocean going vessels passed with cargoes of this sand filling. Subse- quently, this canal was refilled. All the street paving was relayed. sidewalks re- bullt, curbs replaced, water mains and sewers renewed and vegetation re- planted, More than six years were con- sumed In this work the cost of which was In excess of $4,000.000 to the muni- cipality and many millions more to the Individuals.

At this time Galveston is enjoying an unprecedented era of prosperity. Resi- dence houses are hard to get and busi- ness houses are practically unobtain- able. Many new ririns are coming in and vacant property is being rapidly acquired for construction purposes. The principal lines of business in

Galveston are cotton compresses, of which several are among the largest in the world, grain elevators of enor- mous capacity; cotton seed cake mills and. cotton seed cake sacking plants, rice mills, flour mills, marine ways, ship yard; machine shops, cotton concentra- tion plants, cigar manufacturing, broom factories and. tish and oyster plants.

The surf bathing, fishing and hunting are exceptionally good and attract many thousands of visitors every year to the city.

The Rosenberg Library, the gift of the late Henry Rosenberg, represents an outlay of $240,000 and has an endow- ment of $600,000. It is a lending and reference library of 50,000 volumes, and with Its popular free lecture depart- ment, performs very important edu- cational services to the citizens. There are large. and completely equipped hospitals.
