Abreast of the times not only in man- ufacturIng, civic and other activities, but in the hospitality it affords the visitor. San Antonio boasts the possession of some of the finest hotels in the state. Of course the hotels are not all in the same class. They vary in accommodation as well as in prices and thus meet the var- ied requirements of all classes of guests. The finest of them furnish a class of at- traetlons, fare and service to satisfy the exaeting demands of those familiar with the most famous hostelries of the coun- try. The others. graled down to some very inexpensive houses, each in its class adds to the general repute of the city as one not surpassed by any of its size anywhere in the manner it caters to the needs of permanent guests or of stran- gers within its gates.
In all other branches of public conven- ienee San Antonio is up to the standard of highest efficiency and in all ways en- dowed with the factors and forces de- stined to provide for the development of the eity along progressive lines of prox- ress. No city of its size in the world has so great a number and acreage of beautiful public parks as San Antonio, and scattered throughout the city from its solidly huilt center to the furthest suburbs, it is dotted with garden square places, small parks, and private pleasure grounds. Something of the old Spanish love of fountains, rare foliage and flow- ers is expressed in the marvelous splen- dors of these little gems of landscape gardening, but after all it is the peculiar richness of the native soil, the fructify- ing balminess of the climate and the al- most perennial warmth of the sunshine that have made possible the fine floral and arborial effects of these ever-hloom- ing parks.
Although the waters of San Antonio river and San Pedro creek are now used almost wholly for irrigation or manu- facture, they are two of the chief con- tributors to the picturesqueness of the city, Within the city these streams flow in every direction, so that more than 2,000 bridges are required for the needs of the city traffic. Many of these via- ducts are of the most modern kind; sev- enteen of them are models of the strength and symmetry of the twentieth century steel bridge huilding art, and all of them offer vistas and perspectives that cannot be matched for sheer lovhi- ness within the limits of any other city.
Although San Antonio has long been recognized as the headquarters and dis- tributing point for the enormous cattle husiness of Central and Southwestern Texas, yet this branch of its activities is surpassed in volume and values by other hranches of its constantly larging business. The amount of cotton. wool. hides and other raw materials, the aggregate of wholesale and retail tratlic and the amount of manufacturing car- ried on in the city would be adequate for
