VALENTINE RUST CEMETERY - Washington Co. VA, near Mendota Map Area

By IVAH JANE RUST PISTONO submitted by HAZEL V. HOUSER Dec 5, 1983

Located on the farm which now belongs to Mr. REECE LAUDERMILK OF Bristol, VA There are only two monuments in the cemetery which are legible. It containes quite a few graves, many unmarked or marked with a field stone. The original fence was removed after the property left the RUST family and cattle were allowed to graze. Many of the markers were hauled away to make mowing easier. In 1982 a smaller area was fenced in and VALENTINE's monument was erected again. My cousin told me that during the depression her father, JAMES RUST, who owned the farm, permitted several people in the community who could not afford to buy a burial plot to bury their dead here. [by IVAH JANE RUST PISTONO]

VALENTINE C. RUST Dec 10 1831 - Nov 13 1927 (double monument) "Father" ELIZABETH RUST Feb 28 1840 - May 18 1891 "Mother"

(This monument was erected in 1927. ELIZABETH, his wife, had died in 1891.

Her grave was marked with a field stone. Her name and dates were placed on the monument in 1927) (VALENTINE C. RUST son of DAVID & SUSANNA MILLS RUST, & ELIZABETH RUST is the dau of HENRY LEONARD & MARY MOORE)

The second monument reads;

Marked the five DAUGHERTYs, but when I went to place this marker, and we had cleaned and mowed, there were six graves. We also found two infant graves at the foot of THOMAS & ROSA WILLIS. There are a total of 40 graves in this cemetery It is believed to be that the DAUGHERTYs are family of ISAAC KING DAUGHERTY and NANCY, who the DAUGHERTY Chapel Church was named after. Their son JOHN married CAROLINE LYON, the daughter of WILLIAM and LUCINDA LYON. They moved to Texas.

CAROLINE was niece to my grandfather ANDY LYON.

This cemetery is now fenced, mowed and well kept.

PAYNE CEMETERY - Looneys Gap #25

Someone cut cedar threes around the cemetery and brush from the tops are on the graves and overgrown with Honeysuckle vines. Known to be buried there are the following."
