McCONNELL CEMETERY - Hilton #1 (Update of Vol 1 Pg 120)
By CLARENCE E. SHEPARD By ELVA ANN BISHOP
Correction: SYLVESTER P. McCONNELL (Vol 1 Pg 121) Mar 14 1851 - June 5 1931
"[This is the] Cemetery where MARGARET ELLIOTT, wife of JOHN McCONNELL and the daughter of WILLIAM & MARGARET KINCANNON ELLIOTT, is burried." by CLARENCE E. SHEPARD
The following is a letter from ELVA ANN BISHOP dated May 1981 "This is the burial place of many of my people. It started as a McCONNELL Cemetery on land owned by my great great grandfather Rev. GEORGE McCONNELL. He lived just below the cemetery and was the first person buried here. The story is that GEORGE's father-in-law, ABRAHAM COMPTON, who lived adjoining and had a COMPTON Cemetery on his land, made a remark that GEORGE McCONNELL would not be buried in his Cemetery ! GEORGE had taken up with Methodism and even became a minister of that faith and ABRAHAM was an ardent Baptist! GEORGE's wife MARY 'POLLY' COMPTON
is buried beside him. There stones are weathering away. His has toppled over and broken in half and hers is illegible.
"In 1939 my maternal uncle HUGH G. BONHAM copied them.
REV GEORGE McCONNELL b Nov 21, 1795 d Aug 28 1849
In memory of MARY COMPTON consort of REV GEORGE MCCONNELL b July 5 1799 d March 4 1860 aged 61 yrs 6 mo 29 days
"I think the cemetery could be called REV. GEORGE McCONNELL CEMETERY
"Buried here also beside my Grandfather SYLVESTER PATTON McCONNELL is his mother MARTHA (DOUGHERTY) McCONNELL Aug 18 1825 - Mar 13 1872 She was first wife of GEORGE D. McCONNELL. Her stone had fallen but I believe it may have been reset. Her parents were JAMES and ELIZABETH (HAMILTON) DOUGHERTY.
"Buried by my Grandmother LUCY S. McCONNELL is her brother MILES W. MCCLELLAN. They were children of WILLIAM A. and RHODA (LAWSON) MCCLELLAN. The wife of MILES W. MCCLELLAN, ELIZABETH HARTSOCK MCCLELLAN is buried by him but has no marker.

McCONNELL CEMETERY (Cont.)
"Most of those buried here are related to McCONNELLs and MCCLELLANS.
"A slave woman of Rev. GEORGE McCONNELL and her twin babies are buried here also. At first they were apart from the otehr graves, but time has enclosed them with the rest.
"Morgan's Chapel Church was built after the cemetery was started of course but I do think of it at Morgan's Chapel Cemetery. The church land was given by MONROE J. McCONNELL (1838 - 1917). His nick name was "MORG' and this is where the name 'Morgan's Chapel' came from. (So I'm told)."

BROADWATER CEMETERY - Hilton #4
By DARRELL J. RYAN & LESLEY RYAN
Visited Nov 19 1983
This cemetery is located on VA. State Route 670. It is not visible from the road. Situated a few hundred yards south of the roadway about half way between the two bridges that cross Copper Creek on Route 670. This cemetery is in very poor shape. Only five headstones remains standing. Most of the fence around the cemetery has been torn down and cattle are free to roam through it which may have contributed to the rocks being overturned or broken. Could not tell if there were any unmarked graves.

QUILLEN-OSBORNE CEMETERY - Hilton #13
By DARRELL J. RYAN & RANDY LANE
Visited Nov 5 1983
". . MRS. CHARLES OSBORNE, where I inquired about two of the cemeteries (Hilton # 13 & 14), told me that the one just in behind her house was known as the QUILLEN-OSBORNE Cemetery. Her mother-in-law was a QUILLEN and Mrs. OSBORNE and her husband lived in the old Quillen home."

HORTON-BROADWATER CEMETERY - Hilton #14
By DARRELL J. RYAN & RANDY LANE
Visited Nov 5 1983
The name of this cemetery is not known specifically as HORTON or BROADWATER. Mrs. CHARLES OSBORNE said she thought it was one of the two but wasn't sure of either one. The cemetery is in very poor shape with a great many of the head stones turned over or broken. There was a lot of the stones that could not be reached because of wild rose bushes and blackberry briars, not to mention the honeysuckle vine and small brush covering a large portion of the cemetery. There

was quite a few graves marked only with plain field rocks with no names or dates. Some graves had just recently been moved.
