RAMEY / POWERS CEMETERY - Dungannon #5

By DIANA ROBERTS & CHARLOTTE NICKELS

By RHONDA S. ROBERSON, JEAN KELLEY, NED PHILLIPS & WILLIAM F. KELLEY

DIANA ROBERTS writes about this cemetery and refers me to CHARLOTTE NICKELS, a retired school teacher that lives there. DIANA gives a background about this cemetery.

"Although I do not have a listing for it, I would like you to be aware of a cemetery that was moved. This was the OLD MILLER YARD TOWN CEMETERY. In the early 1900's when Miller Yard was no longer a city, the Railroad came through, as near as I can understand, and there is no longer a city nor cemetery there. They dug up the people located in MILLER YARD CEMETERY."

I wrote to CHARLOTTE NICKELS on DIANA ROBERTS recommendation and received a letter which states;

"In reply to your letter of August 8, 1983, I have some accurate information on the RAMEY CEMETERY. I talked with a man who lived near there, worked for the Interstate R.R. Co. and helped move the bodies to a new grave site.

"He said (ARTHUR FARMER) that the Railroad Co. had not intended to touch the RAMEY CEMETERY but when they built a "Y" up in the hill to turn the engines, supposedly after much rain, the hill began to slide in and on to the tracks. So they decided to re-locate the whole thing. He said they got some lots just across Clinch River, formally MOORE, later POWERS, then HARTSOCK Land on a knoll for the new Cemetery.

"They bought 19 caskets of Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn (about 12 miles away and brought them to Carfax, (just above Miller Yard) and the C.C. & 0. Railroad brought them to Miller Yard for the Interstate R.R. Co.

"They put each body in a new casket. He said some bodies were well preserved and some of their shoes were intact and caskets pretty solid. They carried one body & casket at a time to a boat, (there was only a narrow swinging bridge) and took it across to the other side and just a few hundred yards on the hill side

to the new Cemetery. All the crew of workers helped transfer the bodies for burial.

"Each grave has a stone marker he said, and it is in Scott County about 5 miles north of Dungannon. (The only road to the cemetery is Road 716 from Russell Co.)

"I've been there many times in 1925-26-27 when I started teaching in a one room school at Miller Yard. Then it was a thriving little place - a hotel, depot, company houses for Interstate and C.C. & O. Railroads. The Cemetery was moved about 1920-5. I know of a few that were buried there, but many others from Scott Co., would know others. Some of the known burials that would have been moved;

1) JOHN RAMEY Sr. born about 1813 Scott Co., Va. & died and buried March 1914 Miller Yard, Scott Co. Later reburied in 1920's. My great-great- great grandfather. Son of DANIEL & MARGARET PATTON RAMEY. (See DANIEL RAMEY for 1st county ferry) .

2) RENA (Also known as REANY, RENIA, RENY) I believe given name was MARINA OSBORN-OSBORNE, Parents not known yet. Born about 1830 Va. and died 1906 Miller Yard, Scott Co., Va. Reburied 1920's

3) Their son, (See killing of HUGH MOORE) JACK, also known as DACK RAMEY. He died the fall of 1889 Scott Co., Va. in a shoot-out with possee.

4) Possibly; FRANCIS G. RAMEY (female) died 5 Aug 1865, age 5 months. of Bilious Cholera, dau. of JOHN & ARRINIA (RENA) RAMEY. Informant; ARRINA RAMEY. (death record) . From birth record; born, FRANCIS G. RAMEY on the 7th March 1865 to JOHN & ARENA RAMEY

"Being there many times, I know just where the place is after Mr. FARMER told me about it. He said DACK's father, Uncle JOHN RAMEY's body was petrified when re-buried and he heard later the body was stolen. I don't know if that's true or not."

I received a list from RHONDA S. ROBERSON, JEAN KELLEY, NED PHILLIPS AND WILLIAM F. KELLEY of this same new location. Visited October 15, 1978

Located across from Miller Yard in Scott Co. Entrance to the grave yard is Road 716 from the Russell County side.

McCONNELL CEMETERY - Dungannon #57

By DARRELL J. RYAN & LESLEY RYAN

Visited Nov 19, 1983

Mrs. ELIZABETH STALLARD went out of her way to personnally show us the location of this cemetery. It is in bad shape with a few of the stones turned over. The fence that was around the cemetery has been torn down and cattle are free to roam through the cemetery. It is located east of Va. State Route 680 just a few hundred yards north of Culbertson Chapel. The first headstone that caught my eye as we entered the cemetery had engraving on both sides. I have listed both sides as they were engraved on the stone.

Side One

McCONNELL

GEORGE McCONNELL and wife were pioneers in the early history and settlement of Southwest Virginia, migrating from Pennsylvania about 1800.

Appointed by the Governor as Justice of the Peace for Scott County soon after organization, he later became sheriff and was active in public affairs.

Many of their numerous descendants have held positions of honor, trust and distinction in their own and the various states.

Names of children in order of birth:

DINGUS CEMETERY - Dungannon #70

By DARRELL J. RYAN

Visited Oct 30, 1983

Located on Va. State Route 684. "The Dingus Cem. is another family Cemetery of my dad's mother's family. She was a DINGUS before she married my grandfather. This cemetery would be found on the S. Dungannon Map located on Va. State Route 684 approximately one mile before the intersection with route 685 if you go from Point Truth Church on 610 to 684. The cemetery is situated high up on a hill and cannot be seen from the road below. There is a very tall spruce pine tree inside the cemetery which was planted around 1900. The cemetery has a chain link fence around it, just errected about two years ago. I'm sorry to say that it is not too well kept up due to the difficulty in getting to it. We try to clean it off at least once a year in order to have a decoration the 1st of June. I've often wondered why a lot of the older cemeteries were started in such difficult places. I'm sure that at the time they were started no thought was given to the fact that in our days now it would be so unhandy. Still it is such a beautiful place whenever it is cleaned and all the graves get their fresh flowers and are shaded by the long low-lying branches of the spruce pine tree." By DARRELL J. RYAN

RYAN CEMETERY - Dungannon #71

By DARRELL J. RYAN

Visited Oct 30, 1983

"It is situated on a very high knoll overlooking Fincastle Church and approximat- ely 12 mile from the Ramey Cemetery (#12) on the North Dungannon map. My Great Grandfather owned the farm it is located on, some 150 acres. His name was JOHN O. RYAN and him, his wife, EMILY, their son, WILLIAM and two of WILLIAM's infant children are all that's buried there. There are no head stones at any of the graves. JOHN 0. served in the C.S.A. and his oldest son, GEORGE, who was my grandfather made arrangements with the government after JOHN died to get a Confederate rock for him. For some unknown reason the rock was never erected at his grave and over the years through neglect it has been broken. It is now at my dad's house. He and I plan to repair it some way and put it up at the grave and then buy one for my grandmother ... " By DARRELL J. RYAN

The known ones buried there are:

JOHN O. RYAN Dec 31 1832 - Apr 13 1913

MARGARET EMILY MOORE RYAN

Aug 30 1844 - Mar 10 1920

JOHN 0. served as a private in CO A 51st Regiment, VA Inf. of the C.S.A. His Confederate head stone is at one of his grandson's waiting for repair and then to be put up.

WILLIAM A. RYAN Oct 1870 - Mar 1943

There are two other graves of infant children born to WILLIAM A. RYAN and his wife EFFIE OSBORNE RYAN. The children's names and dates are unknown. EFFIE RYAN born Feb 1 1888 and died Dec 15 1981 is buried at Temple Hill Cemetery in Russell Co., Virginia at Castlewood.
