"Located by Grit Hill Church. There used to be a little house over one grave and stone with paling fence, around the graves. Now briars, bushes and beech limbs has fallen and it was impossible to discover even one grave. MRS. CATRON, and MARY LAWSON HEAD told me who she knew to be buried there. I got some dates and names from the Census and a Scott Co. Will. I also knew NANNIE & CLYDE HICKMAN."


Female child of LUEMMA BENTON who died and JERRY HURD & wife took the child to raise, and she died. Sister to ZORIA BENTON was raised by DAN & PHEBA ANN JONES BLEDSOE. She md JAMES LAWSON Jr.

There is 4 cemeteries in this area, DILLION, this one, HIRAM CHURCH across the river, and old PAYNE CEMETERY, where members of these families are buried. According to the tide in the river, wheather it could be forded with a body, as to where they were buried.


JOHN's mother, LAURA HORTON CHURCH was born Oct 24 1846 & died Dec 1 1927. Don't know if she was buried here or across the river in one of the 4 unmarked graves with her husband HIRAM & dau MAGGIE WOLFE.

LUCIAN HORTON CHURCH born Nov 12 1873. He was shot from upstairs porch of CORNELIUS CHURCH house in Mt. Valley on War Creek by HUGH HURD July 22 1894. I don't know where he is, in this cemetery or the one across the river. He md LAURA HURD.


PATTON HORTON CHURCH Sept 4 1879 - Nov 22 1913 He md MARY HICKMAN. He is probably with his father across the river as he lived there. The CHURCH family owned property on both sides of the river, both in Va. & Tn.


JOHN CHURCHs' wife was a heiress of Horton land. Also, the parents of Old WILLIAM CHURCH is also buried in one of these cemeteries. They came from Ky. It is a toos up of which way to find them.

Located in Hancock Co. Tn. At west end of cemetery, the new part, are all kept mowed, old part on east, 15 or 20 graves with trees and small undergrowth on all graves, just old rocks. Unknown who the ROGERS are that are buried there. It possibly could be the old DAVID & DOSWELL lines. It was once their property, also was JESSE ROGERS land.
