Frederick F. Hawley married, in 1885, Clara Smith, a native of Queens- burg, New York, who died in 1932. Mr. Hawley is the father of four chil- dren : I. Hawley, a graduate of Pratt Institute of Technology. 2. H. Bernard, who, after graduation from Albany Business College, served in the United States Army, and died in 1932. 3. Stuart. 4. CHARLES F. BURHANS-As a citizen of Warrensburg, Charles F. Burhans is not only a leading one in his community and county but also widely known throughout New York State, especially in military, athletic and

Masonic groups. He was born at Warrensburg, February 23, 1868, son of Frederick Osbourne and Helen E. (Barron) Burhans and the grandson of Benjamin P. Burhans. Frederick Osbourne Burhans, who was a native of New York State, died in 1896. Helen E. (Barron) Burhans, also deceased, was born in Le Roy, New York. Grandfather Benjamin P. Burhans came to Warrensburg in the early eighteen thirties and established, with a partner, a tannery, under the name of Burhans and Gray. Later, he purchased the Gray interest in the concern and still later, when joined by his son, Frederick Osbourne, the firm became B. P. Burhans and Son, and continued in active operations until 1890.
Charles F. Burhans attended the Warrensburg grammar and high schools, and prepared for college at the Trinity Military Institute, Tivoli, New York, from which he was graduated. He then matriculated at Columbia University, New York City, with the class of 1889. His first important connection with business was in the employ of the Unexcelled Fire Works Company. After this he was associated with the Wells Balanced Compound Engine Company, with which he remained for three and a half years. Following the death of his father, in 1896, Mr. Burhans returned to Warrensburg to give his atten- tion to the real estate business and the management of the family estate, mat- ters to which he has devoted himself to the present time.
Mr. Buthans was a member of Company B, of the 7th Regiment, New York National Guard, when the United States entered the World War. For a year he was overseas as a first lieutenant of an American Red Cross unit. He is a member of the Edward Mckay Post, of Newark, New Jersey, Vet- erans of Foreign Wars, and the Seventh Regiment Veterans Association. Fraternally, he is affiliated with Glens Falls Lodge, No. 81, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Warrensburg Lodge, No. 425, Free and Accepted Masons, and all the higher bodies of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, including the thirty-second degree, and the Commandery, Knights Templar, in the York Rite. He is a member of Oriental Temple, Albany, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Among his clubs are the Masonic Club of Glens Falls, Adirondack Resort Association, Queen's Village Country Club, the St. Barnard Fish and Game Club, formerly belonged to the Lambs Club, of New York City, and also is a member of the Warren County Fair Association, an organization of which he has been presi- dent. As indicated by his connections, Mr. Burhans has long been interested in sports and athletics. He won repute as a fancy skater, and in the days when the old fifty-two-inch wheel bicycle was popular, he rode in many a "century" over the none too good highways of that time. Loyal, constructive citizenship has been outstanding in Mr. Burhans' career, doing a full share in

advancing the progress of Warrensburg and the welfare of its people. While he might have been elected to almost any local office he cared to accept, he has steadfastly declined political preferment, because he felt that he could do more for the community in less conspicuous ways. Mr. Burhans worships in the Holy Cross Protestant Episcopal Church, of which he is a warden.
Charles F. Burhans married, November 14, 1906, Eva Summerville, a native of Johnsburg, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Burhans are the parents of two children : I. Helen E., a graduate of Connecticut College for Women, at New London, Connecticut, who married Kingdon A. Bishop, of Lakeland, Florida. 2. Charles Frederick, Jr., a graduate of Yale University, New Haven, who received his degree of Bachelor of Science with the class of 1935. He married, in September, 1937, Marcia Lindsay, of Lakeland, Florida, and they have a son, Barron Peck Burhans.
RALPH J. STANLEY-As a teacher and school administrator, Ralph J. Stanley, principal of the Lake Luzerne High School, has performed a work of importance in the community of Luzerne, where he makes his home.
Mr. Stanley was born May 26, 1906, at Franklin, New York, son of Joseph and Agnes (Howe) Stanley. His father, a native of Poland, is now deceased. The mother was born in Treadwell, New York.
In the Franklin schools Ralph J. Stanley received his early education, later attending the Delaware Literary Institute and the New York State College for Teachers, where he was graduated in 1928 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He took the degree of Master of Arts in 1936 at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Immediately after finishing his studies at the New York State Teachers' College, Mr. Stanley taught in Wappingers Falls, New York, as a member of the high school staff for a year. Then he was made principal of the Union School at Eldred, New York, where he remained for two years until he was made principal of the Central School, at Virgil, New York. For five years he held that post. It was in 1936 that Mr. Stanley was appointed principal of the high school at Luzerne.
Taking a lively interest in the general affairs of education, he is a member of the Academic Principals' Association and the National Education Asso- ciation. He belongs to Treadwell Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and to the Free and Accepted Masons, and also is a member of the Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity, the Kappa Phi Kappa Fraternity and the Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity.
In 1933 Ralph J. Stanley married Edna Woolsey, a native of Port Jervis, New York.

ADELBERT DANIEL STONE-Widely known as a business man in Luzerne, Adelbert Daniel Stone is one of the leading grocery and hardware merchants of the community.
Mr. Stone was born April 6, 1865, in Luzerne, New York, son of Cyrus and Samantha (March) Stone. His father, a native of Warrensburg, New York, was engaged in farming activities all through his active career until his death. The mother, also deceased, was born in Pottersville, New York.
The public schools of Luzerne, his birthplace, provided Adelbert Daniel Stone's early education, and after completing his formal schooling he was engaged as a carpenter and millwright until 1904. In that year he started work in the grocery and hardware trade, continuing in this work down to the time of writing. He is one of the town's oldest merchants in point of years of service, and is widely and favorably regarded.
Formerly he was a director of the Luzerne Hadley Bank, and in many other ways he has taken part in the life of his community. Active in political affairs, Mr. Stone served for some years as justice of the peace, and he was also a member of the School Board of Luzerne and was its president for a considerable period of years. He has likewise served his town as its tax collector and as overseer of the poor. He is a member of Luzerne Lodge, No. 871, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, twice serving as Noble Grand of this lodge. He attends the Methodist Church. In spare time he is fond of the out-of-doors, and is active in many sports of a healthful nature, notably baseball.
Adelbert Daniel Stone married (first) Minnie Raymond, a native of Corinth, New York, who is now deceased. He married (second) Hattie Gage, a native of Luzerne. By the first marriage there was one son and by the second marriage four children were born: By the first marriage: I. Leo Guy. By the second : 2. Mildred A., wife of Chester A. Higgen, of Glens Falls. 3. Winfred C., engaged in the grocery and hardware business; served in the United States Army during the World War. 4. Marion C., wife of Richard F. Hall, of Luzerne. 5. Ernest N., engaged in the grocery and hardware business in Luzerne.
ROBERT LOUIS STEIN-In the banking and business life of Luzerne, where he is cashier of the Luzerne Hadley Bank, Robert Louis Stein has performed a work of importance and value.
Mr. Stein was born June 7, 1896, in Albany, New York, son of Jacob and Emma (Dankert) Stein. His father and mother were both born in Albany, and both are now deceased. The father was for several years engaged in the real estate business, and was deputy treasurer of the city of Albany.

Public schools provided the formal education of Robert Louis Stein in his younger days, and he completed his high school studies in Albany, his birth- place. He then entered the banking business in association with the First Trust Company, of Albany, in 1915, continuing his work here until 1917, when he left the First Trust Company to go with the Mechanics' and Farmers' Bank, of Albany. Until November, 1917, he carried on that work. But in that month he entered the United States Army Medical Corps. After being honorably discharged from the service, in March, 1919, he returned to the First Trust Company of Albany, becoming active in its affairs and remaining in its employ until 1928. In that year he associated himself with the Glens Falls Trust Company, continuing with it until 1930. In 1930 he came to the Luzerne Hadley Bank, where he has served as cashier down to the time of writing.
In civic and social affairs Mr. Stein has also taken a lively interest. He belongs to Ancient City Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons, and W. J. Varney Post of the American Legion, of which he was formerly Commander. He was also Adjutant of the Warren County organization of the Legion. He is a member of the Luzerne Chamber of Commerce and is chairman of the Graves Registration Committee of Warren County. His military service, beginning with his enlistment in the Medical Corps of the United States Army on June 7, 1917, was an important one. He was assigned to Base Hospital, No. 33, and served overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces in England about one year until he was honorably discharged with the rank of first class private on March 5, 1919. In spare time Mr. Stein greatly enjoys outdoor sports and recreations. He is fond of basketball and golf, as well as fishing and hunting, and gardening occupies a great deal of his spare time. He attends the Methodist Church.
Robert Louis Stein married, in 1935, Grace MacDougall, who was born in Argyle, New York.
JOHN HENRY BOOTH-A member of the New York State Bar for more than half a century, Judge John Henry Booth has been engaged in the private practice of his profession since 1906 in Plattsburg, where he is recog- nized as a most able attorney, and a leader in civic, religious and political life. He was born in Vergennes, Vermont, December 20, 1863, the son of Cyrus Austin and Sarah (White) Booth, both deceased. Cyrus Austin Booth, a native of Newtown, Connecticut, was engaged in the mercantile business for many years prior to his death. Sarah (White) Booth was a native of Ver- gennes, Vermont.
John Henry Booth completed his early education in the Vergennes public schools, and in 1881 matriculated at Yale University, where he was graduated

in 1885 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He then enrolled at Columbia University, and received his degree of Bachelor of Laws as a member of the class of 1887. Admitted to the bar later in the same year, he became a member of the firm of Shedden and Booth, with offices at Mooers and Plattsburg, New York, and he continued this partnership until 1894, at which time he was elected surrogate of Clinton County, in which capacity he served two terms until 1906. He came to Plattsburg in 1891 and has ever since that time dis- tinguished himself as a most learned member of the local legal fraternity.
Judge Booth is a prominent member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, having served for forty-three years as treasurer, ten years as vestryman and thirty-six years as warden. He is active in Republican circles, serving several terms as a member of the School Board, and as a member of the local Public Library Board. He is also president of the Samuel F. Vilas Home for Aged Women, and a past trustee of the Young Men's Christian Association. Fra- ternally he is affiliated with the Clinton County Bar Association, Plattsburg Lodge, No. 621, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, of which he is Past Exalted Ruler, Plattsburg Lodge, No. 828, Free and Accepted Masons, York Rite, and Oriental Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He is also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Upsilon fra- ternities, and in 1909 served as a member of the Champlain Tercentenary Com- mission. In addition, he holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Discussion Club, and Society of Colonial Wars. During the World War period, Judge Booth was a member of the Legal Advisory Board, and served as a "four-minute" speaker.
He was married, in 1891, to Marie T. Parkhurst, a daughter of Millard F. Parkhurst, and granddaughter of John Henry Parkhurst, for many years warden of Clinton State Prison at Dannemora. She is past president of the State Federation of Women's Clubs, and past president of the Plattsburg Civic League, and was county chairman of the Council of National Defense during the war.
Judge and Mrs. Booth are the parents of the following children: I. John Parkhurst, a graduate in 1914 of Yale University with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and later of Albany Law School, now engaged in the general practice of law in Florida and New York City. During the World War he served with the 26th Yankee Division overseas and received his honorable discharge with the rank of captain. 2. Robert Cyrus, a graduate of Yale University in 1916 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts and of Albany Law School, now a prac- ticing attorney in Plattsburg. He served in the World War with the 26th Yankee Division, and served overseas for several months as a captain in this unit. 3. Katharine M., a graduate of Rosemary Hall and the Miss Finch School in New York City; married Captain Henry B. Margeson, now sta- tioned at Fort McKinley, Maine.

HAMILTON HOLIDAY TRAVER-For many years one of the leading citizens of Luzerne, his New York State birthplace, Hamilton Holiday Traver is assistant cashier of the Hadley Luzerne Bank, of this place.
Mr. Traver was born February 1, 1910, in Luzerne, New York, son of Charles W. and Josephine (Ramsey) Traver. His father, born in Luzerne, was engaged for many years in the United States postal service. The mother was born in Hadley, New York.
Receiving a good public school education, Hamilton Holiday Traver was graduated from high school, then started his association with the Hadley Luzerne Bank in 1928. His first employment was as clerk in the bank, and he so served until 1934. He then was made assistant cashier of the institution, serving in this capacity down to the time of writing.
Taking part also in the affairs of his community, Mr. Traver became a member of Lake Luzerne Lodge, No. 87, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and was at one time Noble Grand of his lodge. He is today secretary of the Van R. Rose Fire Company, and treasurer of the central district and a past president of the Alumni Association of the Hadley Luzerne Central School. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He attends the Pres- byterian Church. His favorite hobbies are outdoor sports and recreations, hunting and fishing being among his best-loved pastimes.
In 1933 Hamilton Holiday Traver married Florence Stanton, who was born in Glens Falls, New York. They became the parents of two children: Ellen Lida, and Hamilton Holiday, Jr.
JOHN JOSEPH MONTGOMERY, M. D .- A notable contributor to the life of Luzerne, where he is a member of the medical profession, Dr. John Joseph Montgomery holds the respect and admiration of his contemporaries in all departments of life.
Dr. Montgomery was born March 26, 1861, in Johnsburg, Warren County, New York, son of George and Mary ( Alexander) Montgomery. His father, a native of Ireland, was engaged all his life as a farmer. The mother was also of Irish birth. Both parents are now deceased.
The schools of Johnsburg, his native place, provided John Joseph Mont- gomery's early education, and he also attended Troy Conference Academy. Completing his formal studies, he taught school for twelve terms, then became a student at the Medical School of the University of Vermont, where he took the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1887. For about two years he practiced his chosen profession in Glens Falls, then he removed to Crown Point, New York. After two years in that place he settled at Lake Luzerne in 1891. Since that time he has practiced medicine and surgery, and his achievements have been notable and worth while.

Dr. Montgomery is a member of the Warren County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. For two terms he served as coroner of Warren County, and in many other ways his work has been of value to the people of the district where he makes his home. He is fond, in leisure time, of hunting and fishing and other healthful recreations that can be enjoyed in the out-of-doors. He attends services at the Presbyterian Church.
In 1893 Dr. John Joseph Montgomery married Elsie Davis, a native of Crown Point, New York.
WILLARD W. HALL-Widely and favorably known as a farmer and lumberman, Willard W. Hall has earned the confidence of his fellow- citizens in Luzerne and this region of New York State.
Mr. Hall was born January 3, 1858, in Luzerne, New York, son of Richard Warren and Lurinda (Spaulding) Hall. His father, born at Luzerne, was engaged until his death in farming and lumbering, and the mother, a native of Essex County, New York, is also deceased.
Willard W. Hall was formally educated at the district schools of Luzerne, his birthplace, and at Glens Falls Academy. Completing his studies, he was employed by his father in farming and lumbering, gradually assuming more and more responsibility as he acquired a knowledge of the work at hand. He has continued along these lines down to the time of writing, and is now man- aging the business that his father established many years ago.
He also takes a deep interest in the affairs of his times. His political align- ment is with the Republican party, and he served for six years as supervisor of Warren County, serving as chairman of the Board of Supervisors from 1904 to 1907. From 1907 to 1910 he was sheriff of the county.
In 1884 Willard W. Hall married Addie Thomas, a native of Warrens- burg, New York. The following children were born of this marriage: I. Helena Bernice Hall, of further mention. 2. Richard Francis Hall, also men- tioned below. 3. Lurinda Helen Hall (see below).
Helena Bernice Hall, the first-named of these children, attended the State Normal School at Oneonta, New York, and became the wife of Leslie G. Holeran ; they live in Crestwood, New York. Her sister, Lurinda Helen Hall, is the wife of Clyde W. Dean ; they live in Glens Falls.
The son, Richard Francis Hall, was born April 18, 1892, at Luzerne, New York, and was educated in the public schools here and at Glens Falls High School. When he finished his formal schooling, he became associated in farm- ing and in the lumber business with his father. He has continued in this work down to the present, and is a director of the Luzerne Hadley Bank and a

leader in many local enterprises. He and the other members of the Hall family are members of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He is a Republican in his political views, and from 1922 to 1928 was supervisor of the county of Warren. From 1928 to 1930 he served as sheriff of the county. Since 1930 he has been a member of the county committee of the Republican party organ- ization. He is a member of the Hadley Luzerne Central District School Board. He is fond of fishing, hunting and other outdoor sports, as is his father, and his position is one of true leadership and standing among his contemporaries.
In 1919 Richard F. Hall married Marion Stone, a native of Luzerne, New York. The children of this marriage have been Richard Warren Hall and Harriet Rowena Hall.
NATHAN PROLLER-In business, politics and civic affairs Nathan Proller has rapidly risen to high rank in Luzerne, where he has been known since his boyhood, although his education and commercial experience took him to other places. His proven judgment, progressive outlook and sterling integrity have won him a large following and he has been elected to important town and county offices.
Mr. Proller was born at Gloversville, New York, August 19, 1901, son of Hyman H. and Becky (Smukler) Proller, both natives of Russia, the former being engaged in a general store and real estate business. Nathan Proller attended the public schools at Lake Luzerne, was graduated from the Corinth, New York, High School, and then pursued courses in the Wharton School of Business Administration, University of Pennsylvania, from which he was graduated with the class of 1924.
When Mr. Proller turned his attention to a business career he began with a chain store company, as manager of its North Adams, Massachusetts, store. After a year's experience he was made general manager of the whole system which then included ten establishments. After three years, Mr. Proller resigned his very fine position to locate in Amsterdam, New York, where he started an automobile business of his own. After eighteen months, however, he removed to Lake Luzerne, New York, where he opened a store, specializing in low-priced products of a varied character. He also carries on a general insurance business.
Keenly interested in politics since young manhood, Mr. Proller allied himself with the principles of the Republican party and was active in local campaigns. He was a justice of the peace for two years and, since 1934, has been a supervisor of Warren County. Since 1937 he has been chairman of this board, the youngest man ever to hold this important post in the history of the country. As should be widely known, the county board of supervisors

have administrative charge of the business of the county, and therefore are largely responsible for the success or failure of this phase of municipal activities.
In 1933 Mr. Proller became a member of the New York State Association of Towns, in which he serves on the executive committee and in which he has been very active. In February, 1938, he conducted one of the afternoon sessions in the "Model Town" meetings of this association, when representa- tives from two thousand town officials were in attendance. His work upon this occasion met with general approval. In Lake Luzerne he is a popular figure in the Chamber of Commerce, which he has served for five years as secretary, and is now a member of the board of directors. Fraternally, he is affiliated with Glens Falls Lodge, No. 81, of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He attends the Hebrew Temple.
HAROLD OLIVER HICHMAN-Although Harold Oliver Hich- man has been a resident of Lake Luzerne and a publisher only since 1936, he already has made a name for himself in his field of activities. Like most suc- cessful newspapermen he is in the business he likes best, and towards which all his experience has tended.
Mr. Hichman is a native of New York City, born August 5, 1908, son of Carl and Blanche L. (Reynolds) Hichman. His mother was born at Phil- mont, New York; his father, a native of Little Falls, this State, was engaged in a typewriter business at the time of his death. Harold Oliver Hichman attended New York City public schools and was graduated from the Albany High School. Matriculating at Union College, he was graduated, in 1931, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In initiating a career, he entered the employ of the well-known Knickerbocker Press, and spent three and a half years learning the publishing business and laying sound foundations upon which he could build. For a short time he traveled as a salesman, but in 1936 came to Lake Luzerne as the partner of Paul Jones, in the firm called the Eagle Publishing Company. Within a few months Mr. Hichman purchased the interest of Mr. Jones and since then he has been the sole owner of the concern. He publishes the "Lake Luzerne Eagle" and the "Corinth Advance," weekly newspapers, and does a job printing business of a varied and extensive character. His college fraternity is Kappa Sigma, and by reason of notable ancestry he is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He attends the Baptist Church.
