RAYMOND P. MADDEN-Proprietor of the Madden Drug Com- pany, pharmacists of Glens Falls, Raymond P. Madden is one of the leading druggists of his city, having spent the past twenty years in the practice of his profession, eighteen of which has been in Glens Falls.


Raymond P. Madden was born at Saranac Lake, May 1, 1897, son of William and Katherine (Murray) Madden. William Madden, a farmer, is a native of Jay, New York. Katherine ( Murray) Madden, his wife, was born in Morsenville.


After passing through the public grade schools and the high school of Saranac Lake, Raymond P. Madden selected a career as a pharmacist and

entered the New York City College of Pharmacy of Columbia University, where he graduated in 1918 with his degree of Graduate in Pharmacy. After obtaining employment as a druggist in New York City, Mr. Madden spent two years there, coming to Glens Falls in 1920 to join the staff of Flint's Drug Store, Incorporated. There, after five years, Mr. Madden became a partner in the corporation, the name becoming Flint and Madden. This enter- prise, of which Mr. Madden has been the sole proprietor since 1937 when he took over the business, is now known as the Madden Drug Company.


During the World War Mr. Madden enlisted in the 36th Division, United States Army, and was assigned to the Field Signal Battalion, going with his outfit to France and spending a year there, seeing service in such campaigns as the Meuse and the Argonne and being honorably discharged in 1919 as a sergeant, first class. A member of St. Mary's Church of Glens Falls, Mr. Madden preserves his war-time associations by membership in both the Vet- erans of Foreign Wars and Glens Falls Post, No. 230, American Legion. He also is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Glens Falls and of Glens Falls Coun- cil, Knights of Columbus, and formerly belonged to the Lake George Asso- ciates. Mr. Madden finds recreation in his triple hobbies of golfing, hunting and fishing.


Raymond P. Madden married in September, 1926, Helen Moynihan, of Glens Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Madden are the parents of three children: I. Robert, a student at St. Mary's Academy. 2. Mary Elizabeth, also a student at St. Mary's Academy. 3. Kathrine.


HOMER H. CHAPMAN-Active in the engineering field for the past seventeen years, Homer H. Chapman has been associated with the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation since 1925, and for the past four years he has served as general manager of the Plattsburg division of this organization. He was born at Hoosick Falls, July 8, 1900, the son of Fred H. and Nettie (Jacobs) Chapman. Fred H. Chapman, also a native of Hoosick Falls, is now retired. Nettie (Jacobs) Chapman is a native of Graf- ton.


After completing his elementary and high school education in the Hoosick Falls schools, Homer H. Chapman matriculated at Syracuse University, where he was graduated in 1921 with the degree of Electrical Engineer. He began his professional career in the Schenectady plant of the General Electric Com- pany, working in the testing department, and later he became associated with the Niagara, Lockport and Ontario Power Company, where he remained for approximately eighteen months. He next entered the employ of the Halcomb Steel Company at Syracuse, continuing with this concern until 1925, when he became identified with the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation,

beginning his career as an engineer at the Ithaca plant. In 1930 he was trans- ferred to group headquarters at Mechanicville, in the capacity of plant super- intendent, in charge of plant operations in Eastern New York, and then in 1934 he came to Plattsburg, to assume his present duties as general manager of the Plattsburg division. During the World War period, Mr. Chapman was enrolled in the Students Army Training Corps, while a student at Syra- cuse University.


Mr. Chapman is a member of the Episcopal Church, an affiliate of Platts- burg Lodge, No. 828, Free and Accepted Masons, Plattsburg Lodge, No. 621, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Theta Alpha and Tau Beta Pi fraternities. He is also a well-known figure in civic life, being vice- president and a director of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Rotary Club. Being devoted to outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing, he has served as past president of both the Plattsburg Rod and Gun Club and the Clinton County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs.


He was married in 1924 to Katharine Linder, a native of Warren, Penn- sylvania, and they are the parents of three children : 1. Robert F. 2. Richard L. 3. James P. Chapman.


WALTER J. ARBENGER-High qualities of civic service and busi- ness activities characterize the career of Walter J. Arbenger, city clerk of Plattsburg, New York. Like many of the citizens of his city, he is a native of another section of the country, having been born at Fort Totten, North Dakota, November II, 1888, son of Phillip and Lena (Hansen) Arbenger. His father, however, came originally from Jamaica, Long Island, and his mother was born in Norway. The older man was engaged in mechanical pursuits until his death. The mother is living.


Walter J. Arbenger began his elementary education at Fort Sidney, Ne- braska, but was graduated from the Plattsburg High School. He supplemented his academic education with studies in the Albany Business College and the Alexander Hamilton Institute, and entered the employ of the Ludlum Steel Company in a clerical capacity. After about eighteen months he went with Armour and Company, remaining with this immense corporation until June 12, 1917, when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in this famous unit throughout the World War, and after, to July 10, 1922, when he received his honorable discharge as a master sergeant in the Paymaster's Department.


Upon his return to civilian life, in 1922, Mr. Arbenger went to Plattsburg, which had retained its hold upon him as it has upon so many others. Until 1928 he was associated with the I. Crete Company, active in general mer- chandising, and of which he is still the secretary. In 1928 he was appointed

city clerk, an office he has filled efficiently since, a period of more than a decade. His civic service has also included two years as member of the Plattsburg Board of Aldermen, and since 1928 he has been secretary of the Municipal Civil Service Commission, and since 1929 has served as secretary of the Beach and Park Committee. Keenly interested in the American Legion from its organization, he has been Commander of the Plattsburg Post, No. 20, of this order, and is a member of the "Forty and Eight." Fraternally, Mr. Arbenger is affiliated with Plattsburg Lodge, No. 828, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and the Plattsburg Lodge, No. 621, Benevolent and Pro- tective Order of Elks. Among his clubs are the Kiwanis, of which he is treasurer, the Plattsburg Rod and Gun, and the Plattsburg Stamp Club. His collection of stamps is becoming increasingly large and valuable with the years. He worships at the Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church.


In 1921 Walter J. Arbenger married Madeline Zoll, a native of Brooklyn, New York, and they are the parents of two children: I. Richard Sheridan. 2. Doris Madeline.


CHARLES M. MORHOUS-A wide variety of service in the busi- ness and public life of Plattsburg and Northern New York State has given Charles M. Morhous ample opportunity for useful service to his contem- poraries. A resident of Plattsburg, he is now treasurer of Clinton County.


Mr. Morhous was born July 8, 1889, in Saranac Lake, New York, son of Julius A. and Louise (Manning) Morhous. His father, born in Lewis, Essex County, New York, was a cabinetmaker all through his active career. The mother, a native of North Elba, New York, is also deceased.


Public schools provided Charles M. Morhous' early education in Saranac Lake. After completing his high school studies there, he went to work for Paul Smith, heat and electric power dealer, in Saranac Lake, continuing his labors with Mr. Smith for eight years. He then left that employment, work- ing for four years at farming and afterward taking up automobile sales and service work at Au Sable Forks, New York. For eight years he remained at Au Sable Forks, but then he removed his automobile business to Plattsburg, where he carried it on for twelve years.


His political activities began early. A staunch Republican, he served as assessor of Black Brook, Clinton County, for six years, and for two years was supervisor for the city of Plattsburg. On January I, 1938, he began his service as Clinton County's treasurer, in which position he continues to render valuable service to the people and institutions of the county at the time of writing. He belongs to Plattsburg Lodge, No. 621, of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and is a Past Exalted Ruler of his lodge. He is likewise a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Committee on Public Affairs, and

the Plattsburg Rod and Gun Club. He attends the Methodist Episcopal Church. Hunting, fishing and golf are among his favorite pastimes, and he gives a great deal of his leisure time to these recreations when occasion per- mits.


In 1910 Charles M. Morhous married Lillian M. Mitchell, a native of Keeseville, New York. One son, Reginald E. Morhous, is now deceased.


WALTER A. LYFORD-Supervisor of Saratoga County, Walter A. Lyford, of Corinth, is not only one of the leading citizens of Saratoga County but is also an outstanding member of the county organization of the Republican party as well as being one of the leading merchants of his com- munity and county.


Walter A. Lyford was born in Corinth, Saratoga County, November 20, 1894, son of Arthur and Amelia (Forbes) Lyford. Arthur Lyford, who was a native of Edinburg, New York, established himself in the paper mill busi- ness, a field in which he remained active until the time of his death. Amelia (Forbes) Lyford, his wife, also deceased, was a native of Fort Ann, New York.


After attending the public schools in Corinth and graduating from the Corinth High School, Walter A. Lyford, supplementing his education with night study in accountancy, found employment as an accountant, in Detroit, Michigan, with the Detroit Steel Products Company. Following this employ- ment, and a similar position with the David Stoat Flour Mills Company, Mr. Lyford spent three years with the Federal Motor Truck Corporation and then, returning to New York, went on the road as a salesman for the Elixman Paper Core Company of Corinth. This association as a salesman interested Mr. Lyford in merchandising and, after a year and half with the Elixman Com- pany, he established himself in the general merchandising business, a field in which he has prospered through the present time.


Mr. Lyford's career was interrupted during the World War period by his service with the United States Army, which he entered in 1917, enlisting in the regular infantry. In April, 1918, he was commissioned as a second lieu- tenant and, in July of 1918, advanced to the grade of first lieutenant, being originally assigned to the 339th Regiment, Regular Infantry and stationed at Battle Creek, Michigan. Later, Lieutenant Lyford was transferred to Peters- burg, Virginia, to aid in the training of troops for overseas, an assignment in which he aided in the organization of the 9th Division, becoming the gas officer of the outfit while it was stationed at Camp Sheridan, Alabama, and, later, at Camp Bragg, North Carolina. Shortly before the close of the war, Lieutenant Lyford was again transferred to Charleston, South Carolina, where he was

furloughed to the United States Army Officers' Reserve Corps, an appoint- ment which he retained until 1934.


Preserving these war-time associations by membership in Horace D. Wash- burn Post, American Legion, an organization of which he was the first com- mander, Mr. Lyford is also a member of Saratoga Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and Corinth Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Always deeply interested in social work, Mr. Lyford was one of the organizers of the Corinth Hospital and, after aiding in its construction, served as a member of its board of trustees until 1938. Side by side with this work, Mr. Lyford has devoted himself assiduously to political problems as a mem- ber of the Republican party, giving generously of his time to public office and to the work of his party. From 1934 to 1938, he served as a member of the Corinth Board of Education and, since January 1, 1938, he has held office as supervisor of Saratoga County. A member of the board of governors of the Young Republicans' League of New York State, Mr. Lyford served as presi- dent of the Young Republicans' Association of Saratoga County in 1936. An attendant of the Corinth Methodist Church, Mr. Lyford devotes much of his leisure to reading, being especially interested in history, particularly that of the Adirondack and the Lake George and Lake Champlain area.


Walter A. Lyford married, in 1921, Mvrtle Gisendaner, who was born in Montgomery, Alabama.


FRED B. CHAPMAN-Treasurer, director and manager of the retail department of Finch, Pruyn and Company of Glens Falls, Fred B. Chapman has been a leading business man of the Lake George region for the past forty years.


Fred B. Chapman was born in Queensbury, April 5, 1875, son of William and Catherine (Braydon) Chapman. William Chapman, who was born in Johnsburg, spent his life as a farmer ; his wife was also a native of Johnsburg.


After passing through the grade schools and the high school of Glens Falls, Fred B. Chapman began his business career by working for several years as a clerk in the Glens Falls post office. Then, after an interval of em- ployment with the Glens Falls, Sandy Hill and Fort Edward Street Railway, in 1901 he became associated with Finch, Pruyn and Company, the organiza- tion to which he has devoted the past thirty-seven years, being at present treas- urer, director and manager of the retail department. In addition to his duties with Finch, Pruyn and Company, Mr. Chapman, since 1915, has been president of Braydon and Chapman, Inc., of Glens Falls and he is also president of the Call Hardware Corporation and of the North Creek National Bank. Among his various civic responsibilities, Mr. Chapman includes the presidency of the board of trustees of the Glens Falls Young Men's Christian Association. A

member of the Glens Falls Rotary Club and the Glens Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Lake George Club and the Glens Falls Country Club, Mr. Chapman is also affiliated with Senate Lodge, No. 456, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and all Masonic bodies of the York Rite, including Oriental Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and the Glens Falls Masonic Club. He is an attendant at the Glens Falls Presbyterian Church, and finds recreation in golf, as well as in hunting and fishing.


Fred B. Chapman married (first), in 1901, Louise Griffin, a native of Washington County, who is deceased. In 1923 Fred B. Chapman married (second) Mabel De Long, of Glens Falls. By his first marriage, Mr. Chap- man is the father of two children: I. Harold. 2. Sterling.


JOSEPH A. McNAMARA-A practicing attorney in Burlington for the past nineteen years, and United States Attorney since 1933, Joseph A. McNamara is active in legal, social, fraternal and Roman Catholic Church circles in Burlington. He was born August 4, 1892, at Fair Haven, Vermont, the son of James McNamara, who up to his death was a slate manufacturer, and Catherine (Foy) McNamara. They both were born at Fair Haven, where Mrs. Catherine (Foy) McNamara still resides.


After completing his grammar and high school education in the Fair Haven public schools, Mr. McNamara attended St. Michael's College one year at Winooski, Vermont, and in 1915 received his degree of Bachelor of Arts from Holy Cross College. After graduating from Harvard University Law School, class of 1918, he enlisted in May of that year in the United States Army and was assigned to Company D, 312th Supply Train, 87th Division. After ten months' service in France with the American Expeditionary Forces, he was honorably discharged in June, 1919, with the rank of sergeant. Return- ing to Fair Haven, Vermont, he resumed his law studies, was admitted to the Vermont State bar in 1919 and commenced practice at Burlington. He has practiced law here ever since, with offices at 166 College Street. In 1925 Mr. McNamara received his degree of Master of Arts from Holy Cross College.


Active in Democratic party circles, he was a delegate to that year's National Democratic Convention. In 1921 and 1922 Mr. McNamara served as city judge and since 1933 has been United States Attorney for the District of Vermont. For the past ten years he has been a member of the Democratic County Committee and is now a member of the State Committee.


In his religious convictions, Mr. McNamara is a communicant of the Cathedral Roman Catholic Church here, where he is also a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, the Ethan Allen Club, the Burlington Council, Knights of Columbus, and Lodge No. 916, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, of which he is Past Exalted Ruler. He is also a member of the Burlington Country Club, the Chittenden County Bar Asso-

ciation, American Bar Association, and a member and vice-president of the Vermont State Bar Association.


Joseph A. McNamara married, in 1922, Mary T. Magner, a native of Rut- land and daughter of Thomas Magner, who formerly was district manager of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York. They have four children : 1. Maureen. 2. Nancy. 3. James. 4. Martha.


Mr. McNamara's favorite diversion and recreation is golf.


FRANK M. FALKENBURY, M. D .- Since 1932 Dr. Frank M. Fal- kenbury has been practicing medicine and surgery in Glens Falls, where his contribution to the life of his times has been significant and valuable.


Dr. Falkenbury was born August 17, 1903, in Whitehall, New York, son of Arthur E. and Luna ( Hodskins) Falkenbury. His father, born in White- hall, has been engaged for years in medical practice. The mother was born at Crown Point, New York.


The public schools of Whitehall, his birthplace, provided Frank M. Falken- bury's early education, and, after finishing his high school studies there, he became a student at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, where he was graduated in the class of 1926 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He then was enrolled at the Medical College of Cornell University, where he took the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1929. There followed a two-year interne- ship at Fordham Hospital, New York City, where he was particularly active in surgery. In 1932 he came to Glens Falls, where he has since carried on his professional work, devoting himself to both medicine and surgery, with offices at No. 41 Sherman Avenue.


In addition to carrying on his own private practice of medicine, Dr. Falken- bury is a leader in the affairs of many organizations. He belongs to the Glens Falls Academy of Medicine, the Warren County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Society and the American Medical Association, and is a Junior Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the associate staff of Glens Falls Hospital. Along with all his other activities, Dr. Falkenbury is a past president of the Cornell University Alumni Association of Glens Falls. He holds memberships in the local Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as in the Phi Chi and Chi Alpha fraternities. On June 13, 1929, he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve Corps, being reappointed in 1934. He attends the Presbyterian Church and is a deacon of his congregation, and in spare time is fond of hunting, fishing and all kinds of healthful outdoor sport.


Dr. Frank M. Falkenbury married, in 1932, Marguerite Zimmerman, a native of Winona, Minnesota, a graduate of the School of Speech of North- western University. To this marriage two children were born; Barbara Alice and Patricia Ann Falkenbury, twins.

J. ALBERT KOCH-Assistant cashier of the First National Bank of Glens Falls, J. Albert Koch has been associated with his bank for the past thirty years, with the exception of when he served in the American Expedi- tionary Forces in France during the World War.


Mr. Koch was born in Montclair, New Jersey, October 30, 1887, son of John A. and Frances J. (McDowell) Koch. John A. Koch was a native of Watsontown, Pennsylvania, and Frances J. (McDowell) Koch, his wife, was born in Newton Hamilton, Pennsylvania. J. Albert Koch was educated in the grade schools of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, and the Glens Falls High School. He entered the service of the First National Bank of Glens Falls, beginning his long period of association with the bank which has continued through the present time, an association in which Mr. Koch has advanced from his original post of clerk to his present position of assistant cashier, to which he was elected in 1929. In June, 1917, Mr. Koch entered the service of his country by en- listing as a private in the 105th Infantry, 27th Division, accompanying his outfit overseas and serving in France for a year, a period in which he took part in many engagements, including those in which his regiment distinguished itself in September and October of 1918 in the Belgian, St. Quentin and Cambria sectors. Discharged from the army in April, 1919, with the rank of sergeant-major, Mr. Koch returned to Glens Falls and took up his duties again at the First National Bank. A member of the Glens Falls Baptist Church, Mr. Koch serves the organization as trustee as well as being a member and a past president of the Glens Falls Masonic Club. He is also a member of several Masonic bodies, from Glens Falls Lodge, No. 121, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, to Oriental Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Mr. Koch, who preserves his military associations by member- ship in the Glens Falls Post of the American Legion, finds recreation from his duties at the bank by engaging in the various outdoor pursuits which are his hobbies.


J. Albert Koch married, June 9, 1923, Rachael Brayton, who is a native of Glens Falls.


DANIEL F. IMRIE-City Attorney of Glens Falls for two years, Daniel F. Imrie is not only one of the outstanding lawyers of the Lake George region but also an active member of the Republican party and one of the civic leaders of Glens Falls.


Daniel F. Imrie was born at Caldwell, on September 15, 1885, son of Robert and Margaret (Ferguson) Imrie. Robert Imrie, who was born at Albany, was a practicing attorney at Lake George; Margaret (Ferguson) Imrie is a native of Caldwell.

After attending the grade schools and the high school of Caldwell, and graduating from Union College in 1906, with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy, Daniel F. Imrie attended Albany Law School, and obtained his degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1908. Admitted to the New York State bar the same year, he established himself in practice at Lake George, removing to Glens Falls, however, in 1911, to maintain his office there through the present time. Mr. Imrie is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the Warren County Bar Association. During the World War he served as a member of the Legal Advisory Board, served as a "four-minute" speaker, gave his time as a member of the Emergency Fuel Administration organization, and was secretary of various Liberty Loan campaigns. Always deeply interested in civic problems, Daniel F. Imrie became active in Glens Falls' affairs soon after establishing his practice in the city, being a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention, serv- ing as chairman of the Glens Falls City Planning Commission from 1927 to 1934, and sitting as a commissioner on the Glens Falls Municipal Civil Service Commission since 1927. In January, 1936, he was appointed to the office of city attorney, a post which he occupied until he resigned on September I, 1938. In addition to his public and private duties within his profession, Mr. Imrie is also a director of the Glens Falls Savings and Loan Association and is a member of the Session and an elder of the Glens Falls Presbyterian Church. A member and past president of the Glens Falls Rotary Club, and belonging to Glens Falls Country Club, the Lake George Club, the Glens Falls Chamber of Commerce and Delta Phi and Sigma Xi fraternities, Mr. Imrie is also a member of Senate Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, as well as being a Past Master of the order. Mr. Imrie finds recreation in his hobbies of golf and automobiling.
