MILFORD KNOWLES SMITH-Admitted to the Vermont bar.in 1930, Milford Knowles Smith immediately established his offices at Rutland, and has enjoyed a most successful legal practice to the present day, being highly regarded both by his professional colleagues and the large number of local citizens who comprise his extensive clientele.


Mr. Smith was born in Albany, New York, February 25, 1906, the son of the late Dr. Ray E. and Ethel M. (Burgess) Smith. Dr. Smith was born at Ellenburg, New York in 1882, and after graduating from the Albany Med- ical School of Union College, he began the practice of medicine in Rutland, where he was engaged most successfully until his death in 1927. He was a member of the staff of Rutland Hospital, and for a time served as president of the local Board of Aldermen. During the World War he served overseas with the United States Army Medical Corps, and at the close of the conflict he received his honorable discharge with the rank of major. He was the son of Rev. Wilford Hale Smith, a native of Willsboro, and a minister of the Methodist Church. Ethel M. (Burgess) Smith was born at Mechanicville in

1882. Dr. Roeback, great-great-great-grandfather of Mr. Smith, was the first practicing physician in the State of Vermont, and during the Revolutionary War he served with the Green Mountain Boys.


After completing his studies in the Rutland High School, Milford Knowles Smith entered preparatory school at Tilton, New Hampshire, and later enrolled at the University of Vermont. After two years at that institution, he matricu- lated at the Albany Law School of Union University, where he was grad- uated in 1930 with Bachelor of Laws degree. In October of the same year he was admitted to the Vermont bar, and has since that time maintained a successful general practice in Rutland. Mr. Smith has also taken an active part in local public affairs, serving from 1933 to 1935 as city attorney, and during 1936 as municipal judge.


He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, an ardent Republican, and affiliate of Center Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge No. 345, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Knights of Pythias and the Frater- nal Order of Eagles. He also holds membership in the Rutland County, Ver- mont State and American Bar associations.


Mr. Smith is unmarried.


GEORGE MERRY SOMERS, D. D. S .- For the past thirty-three years, Dr. George Merry Somers has maintained offices in Proctor, Vermont, for the general practice of dentistry, and he is one of the leading members of his profession in this locality, serving for ten years as a member of the State Board of Dental Examiners.


Dr. George Merry Somers was born at Magog, Quebec, Canada, May 21, 1875, the son of Dr. George O. and Leston A. (Merry) Somers, both now deceased. Dr. George O. Somers was born at Barnet, Vermont, in 1819. He received his degree of Doctor of Medicine at Dartmouth College in 1844, and was engaged in the practice of medicine at Magog, Quebec, Canada, for many years prior to his death in September, 1891. Leston A. (Merry) Somers, born at Magog in 1845, died in 1895.


Dr. George Merry Somers was graduated from Magog Academy in 1892, and then located in Chicago, where he was in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad for four years. The next two years were spent in Colorado, and then Dr. Somers entered Haskell Dental School in Chicago, where he was a member of the class of 1901. He launched his private practice as a dentist at Rutland, later transferred to Brandon, and then in September, 1905, he came to Proctor, where he has ever since maintained his offices. He was appointed by Governor Redfield Proctor as a member of the State Board of Dental Examiners, and after serving for five years, he was reappointed to another term by Governor Franklin Billings, serving to 1933. extensive professional duties, Dr. Somers also serves as a director of the Proctor Trust Company.


Dr. Somers is an active member of the Union Church at Proctor, where he has served as a member of the board of trustees. He is a supporter of the Republican party, and an affiliate of Sutherland Falls Lodge, No. 108, Free and Accepted Masons. He is also a member of the Rutland County and American Dental associations, and a former president of the Vermont State Dental Society.


He was married, September 29, 1911, to Susan Burditt, of Pittsford, daughter of Dan D. and Minnie (Mason) Burditt. Dr. and Mrs. Somers are the parents of a daughter : Leston Merry, who married Joseph P. Kearney, of Englewood, New Jersey.


ALBERT ALEXANDER CREE-He was born in Spruce Creek, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, June 15, 1898, the son of Harry C. and Minnie L. (Irwin) Cree, and was educated in the public schools at Tyrone, Pennsylvania, and at Columbia University, New York City. During the World War he went to France and first served with the French Army, as a part of the American Field Service Volunteers ; later he was attached to the Air Corps of the United States Army, with the rank of second lieutenant. He began his business career in the latter part of 1919, with Lee Higginson and Company, investment brokers in New York City, becoming assistant treasurer. He then was appointed assistant treasurer of the New England Public Service Company at Augusta, Maine; remained there until September, 1935, when he came to Rutland, Vermont, as vice-president and general manager of the Central Vermont Public Service Corporation and the Twin State Gas and Electric Company ; and in April, 1936, he was elected president of these two companies, in which capacity he has continued to the present day.


Mr. Cree is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church ; is president of the Vermont State Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Rotary Club. He is also affiliated with Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Rutland Coun- try Club.


He was married, July 3, 1920, to Mary Louise Coizet, of Saint Paul-en, Jarrez, France, daughter of Jean Batiste Coizet. Mr. and Mrs. Cree are the parents of two children : I. Anne Marie, born June 4, 1921. 2. Albert Alex- ander, Jr., born February 3, 1924.


SILAS S. BAKER-Active in the industrial life of Plattsburg for many years, Silas S. Baker is now president of the Baker Fairchild Lumber Company, Incorporated, and also the Au Sable Forks Lumber Company, and is recognized as one of the leading figures in his particular field in this locality.

Mr. Baker was born in this city, September 14, 1892, the son of the late Frank L. and Esther (Couschaine) Baker. Frank L. Baker, also a native of Plattsburg, was engaged during his lifetime in the carpentry and contracting business.


Silas S. Baker attended the Plattsburg public schools, and graduated from St. Peter's Academy, and after learning the carpentry trade continued in this field until 1928. During the World War period he taught carpentry at Syra- cuse University, where he had a class of forty-two students. He was honor- ably discharged from service in the latter part of 1918 with rank of sergeant, first class. In 1928 Mr. Baker entered the contracting business, and he con- tinued independently in this field until 1934, at which time, in partnership with Mr. Fairchild, he purchased the present lumber business.


This business, started in 1923 by Grover C. Oliver, continued under his management until the present owners purchased his interests. The Baker Fairchild Lumber Company was incorporated in 1936, and at present is furnishing the lumber and labor for the North County School which is being completed at Lake Placid. This company has also furnished the labor and material in the building of many houses in Plattsburg and Dannemora.


Mr. Baker is a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church, and an affiliate of the St. John the Baptist Society, Knights of Columbus, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He is also an honorary member of the Police Department, and in addition, holds membership in American Legion Post, No. 20, Carpenters Union, Local No. 1042, North Eastern Lumberman's Association and the Plattsburg Rod and Gun Club.


He is married to Katheryn Finnegan, of Peru, New York, a graduate of Peru High School and Albany Business College. Mr. and Mrs. Baker are the parents of a son : James Francis, born in Plattsburg, now a student in the local public school system.


MERRITT OTIS EDDY, M. D .- Dr. Merritt Otis Eddy, a prac- ticing physician and surgeon in Jericho Center, Chittenden County, Vermont, for over twenty-six years, and a descendant of a family which has been con- nected with the history of New England since the earlier part of the seven- teenth century (1630), is a native of Townshend, Vermont.


He was born February 26, 1877, the son of Willard Harrison and Mary Jane (Lakin) Eddy, both deceased. Willard Harrison Eddy was born at Winhall, Vermont, February 27, 1835, and was engaged in general farming at Townshend for many years. He was active in Republican circles, holding various local offices, and fraternally he was affiliated with the Free and Ac- cepted Masons. He died at Boston, Massachusetts, February 6, 1917. His ancestors, John and Samuel Eddy, sons of a minister in England, came to

America in 1630 on the ship "Hand Maid," and settled in New England. Mary Jane (Lakin) Eddy, born at Peru, Vermont, January 20, 1837, died at Townshend, May 30, 1907.


After completing his preparatory education in the Townshend public schools, Dr. Eddy enrolled at Leland Gray Seminary, where he was a member of the class of 1896. For the next five years he was in charge of a depart- ment at the McLean Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and then he enrolled at Tufts Medical College, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1905. For the next six months he served an interneship at the Taunton City Hospital in Taunton, Massachusetts, after which he came to Readsboro, Vermont, to launch his career in the medical field. He continued there until May, 191I, at which time he came to Jericho, where he has ever since that time distinguished himself as a most capable physician and surgeon, earning and maintaining the respect and confidence of an extensive and exacting clientele. From 1922 until 1934 he also served as health officer in Jericho.


Dr. Eddy is a member of the Congregational Church, an ardent supporter of the Republican party, and an affiliate of the Free and Accepted Masons, County, State and American Medical associations.


He was married at Boston, Massachusetts, to Mildred Dane Hooper, a native of Wakefield, Massachusetts, born November 21, 1880 the daughter of the late Alfred and Lucy (Olmsted) Hooper, both natives of Eastport, Maine. Dr. and Mrs. Eddy are the parents of two children: I. Alice Gertrude, born at Boston, Massachusetts, July 21, 1906, married Edwin J Drury, of Newark, New Jersey, where Mr. Drury is associated with the Bell Telephone Company, and they are the parents of a daughter, Barbara Jane Drury, born October 12, 1932. 2. Richard Hooper, born at Readsboro, Vermont, September 21, 1910, is engaged in the automobile business near Burlington.


LOUIS S. NEWTON-Prominent among the leading architects of the State of Vermont and surrounding vicinity is Louis S. Newton who, for the past seventeen years, has practiced in the city of Burlington, where many examples of his talents are to be found in business, public and residential buildings. He is universally recognized for his achievements and enjoys an enviable reputation among his professional colleagues.


Mr. Newton was born in Hartford, Vermont, March 21, 1871, the son of John and Mary Jane (Dutton) Newton, both deceased and former natives of his birthplace where his father engaged in farming throughout his life. After a general education in the public schools of this community Mr. Newton attended St. Johnsbury Academy and later went to Boston, Massachusetts, where he took special courses in architecture. Upon finishing his training he established himself in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and after continuing here

for a short time returned to Hartford, his birthplace, where he was to con- duct an architectural business until 1921, when he came to Burlington, where he has since practiced, maintaining offices at No. 135 Saint Paul Street.


During his long and distinguished career Mr. Newton has carried out a number of important commissions, including the redesigning and remodeling of many of the buildings of the University of Vermont. He has also con- ducted similar work on the church at Newport, New Hampshire, another church at Swanton, Vermont, the Gates Memorial Library, and the First National Bank, both of White River Junction ; the Profile House in the White Mountains ; the Peck Block, the Ridgewood and Marannette apartment houses, Governor Billings residence, of Woodstock; the H. W. Abraham residence and store and the Russell Brown residence, of Burlington, and the Mrs. J. C. Herrick residence of Stowe. He reconstructed and modernized the Burling- ton Rapid Transit Company's Central Terminal, which was finished May I, 1939. Each of these commissions, together with many other edifices of a similar type are graphic testimony of his ability and success.


Mr. Newton attends the Congregational Church and for recreation de- votes most of his leisure to the hobby of photography.


FARRINGTON D. POST-A native and long resident of St. Albans, Vermont, Farrington D. Post is an exemplar of the New England tradition of useful citizenship. He traveled an indirect, but colorful road in business until recent years, when he was elected city clerk and treasurer of St. Albans.


Mr. Post was born in the city, May 28, 1888, son of Nathan N. and Caroline Cordelia (Ladd) Post. His father, born in Georgia, Vermont, as was his mother, was a well-known attorney who for twenty-six years was judge of the Municipal Court, thus placing him among the pioneers of this type in jurisdiction. He is deceased, but Mrs. Post still makes her home in the Green Mountain State.


Farrington D. Post was prepared for higher education in the grammar and high schools of his birthplace. Entering Dartmouth College, he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science, with the class of 1911. For two years he was an educator, teaching in a Cambridge, New Hampshire, school, but then went with Swift and Company, as a salesman. In 1916 Mr. Post enlisted in the Quartermaster's Department of the United States Army and received a commission as a second lieutenant while in the service. Upon his return to civilian life he went with Swift and Company, once more, for a short time. Over quite a period he engaged in the wholesale confectionery business, or until 1930, when he became a coal and ice dealer in St. Albans. Since 1937 he has been city clerk and treasurer at St. Albans.

Mr. Post is a Republican in his party allegiance. Fraternally, he is affiliated with St. Albans Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and is a Mason. His college fraternity is Kappa Sigma, and he is a member of the Owl Club, the Champlain Country Club, and the Franklin County Rod and Gun Club, of which he is also president. He attends St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church.


In 1918 Farrington D. Post married Ruth F. Fisher, a native of Fairfield, Vermont, and they are the parents of a son : Farrington Fisher Post.


FRANCIS D. FOLEY-A practicing attorney in Burlington for the past thirteen years, Francis D. Foley is now senior member of the well-known firm of Foley and Rothman, and he has also served since 1935 as judge of probate of Chittenden County.


Mr. Foley was born in Windsor, Vermont, April 12, 1898, the son of Thomas F. and the late Margaret Elizabeth (Devine) Foley. Thomas F. Foley, a native of East Poultney, Vermont, was engaged for many years in the employ of the Burlington and Maine Railroad, but is now living in retire- ment. Margaret Elizabeth (Devine) Foley was born in Bartonsville, Ver- mont.


Francis D. Foley completed his early education in the public and parochial schools at Springfield, Massachusetts, and then matriculated at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. One year later he transferred to George- town University, Washington, District of Columbia, where he was graduated in 1923 with his degree of Bachelor of Laws. He came to Burlington in 1924 and for the next two years was attorney for the United States Veterans Bureau ; he then established his private law practice in that city. He has ever since that time enjoyed an extensive legal practice, and as senior member of the firm of Foley and Rothman he has been identified with many important cases, being regarded as a most capable and honest member of the local legal fraternity. During the World War he was an enlisted man in the United States Army.


Mr. Foley professes the Roman Catholic faith, and in political allegiance is a staunch supporter of the Democratic party, being at present a member of the county committee. He has also served two terms as alderman, and in 1935 was appointed to his present post as judge of probate of Chittenden County. Fraternally he is affiliated with Burlington Lodge, No. 916, Benev- olent and Protective Order of Elks, Ethan Allen Club and the Vermont State and Chittenden County Bar associations. He is also a member of the Ameri- can Legion and the Burlington Country Club.


He was married, November 24, 1928, to Ella M. Merrill, a native of Burlington, and they are the parents of three children: I. Francis D., Jr. 2. Barbara Ann. 3. Robert Merrill.

RUSSELL FRANK NIQUETTE-Russell Frank Niquette, a well- known member of the Burlington legal fraternity, and a leading figure in the political and civic life of this locality was born at Winooski, Vermont, August 8, 1907, the son of Frank T. and Alma (Manseau) Niquette, both natives of Winooski, Vermont. Frank T. Niquette was born August 1, 1874, and for several years he was engaged in the wholesale grocery business. He later entered the contracting and building field, and has built eighty-five buildings in Winooski. He is a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church, an affiliate of the St. John the Baptist and St. Peter's societies, and in political life, an active member of the Democratic party, having served at one time as alderman of Winooski.


Russell Frank Niquette acquired his early education at St. Louis Convent in Winooski, and later studied at St. Hyacinth High School in St. Hyacinth, Quebec, Canada, where he was graduated in 1923. For the next two years he was enrolled at St. Hyacinth College, and then he entered Burlington Busi- ness College, where he studied bookkeeping and secretarial work. He after- wards matriculated at Boston University Law School, where he received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1933. He became a member of the Vermont bar on October 6, 1934, and has to this date conducted a general practice in Bur- lington and vicinity, being now associated with United States District Attor- ney, Joseph A. McNamara. Since March I, 1935, he has served as city attor- ney of Winooski, and for the past three years he has been representative from the city of Winooski to the General Assembly at Montpelier.


Mr. Niquette is a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church and a well-known supporter of the Democratic party, being executive secretary of the Young Democratic Club of the State of Vermont, and a member of the Winooski City Democratic Committee. He is also a member of the St. John the Baptist Society, St. Stephen's Council No. 2284, Knights of Columbus, of which he is Past Grand Knight, Burlington Lodge, No. 916, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Chittenden County Bar Association as well as Vermont Bar Association. He also holds membership in the Waubanakee Golf Club.


He was married August 10, 1937, to Corinne Villemaire, a native of Winooski, born September 7, 1917, the daughter of Wilfred and Katherine Villemaire. A daughter, Mary Jane, was born on May 8, 1939.


ALBERT L. HAYES, M. D .- One of the leading general practitioners of Essex County, Albert L. Hayes, M. D., of Willsboro, is also known as a psychiatrist and is serving in several official capacities, giving generously of his time and talent to the welfare of Willsboro and Essex County.

Albert L. Hayes was born at Hoosick Falls, New York, November 6, 1894, son of John F. and Bridget (O'Toole) Hayes. John F. Hayes, who was a native of Hoosick Falls, established himself in life as a woodworker and be- came the foreman of the woodworking department of the Hoosick Falls plant of Walter A. Wood Company, a position which he held for years and in which he was active until the time of his death. Bridget (O'Toole) Hayes, his wife, also deceased, was born in Ireland.


After passing through St. Mary's Academy at Hoosick Falls, Albert L. Hayes took a year of postgraduate work at the Hoosick Falls Higli School and then, selecting the medical profession for a career, entered Albany Medi- cal College, an institution from which he was graduated in 1920 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Following a year as an interne at Albany City Hospital, Dr. Hayes became associated with Dr. R. B. Lamb at the latter's private hospital at Harmon-on-Hudson, New York, remaining there until October, 1921, when he entered the service of New York State as a psychia- trist at the Hudson River State Hospital. In May, 1922, he was transferred to a similar position at the Dannemora State Hospital, a position which he retained until June of 1929, conducting a general medical practice privately in the community in addition to his duties for the State. Then, in June, 1929, Dr. Hayes resigned from the New York State service and came to Willsboro, New York, where he established himself permanently in a general private practice.


A member of the staffs of the Physicians' Hospital and the Champlain Valley Hospital at Plattsburg, Dr. Hayes supports his profession by member- ship in the Essex County Medical Association, the New York State Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. Always deeply con- cerned in the public welfare, particularly from the standpoint of public health, Dr. Hayes has been active for years in public life and, at present, is health officer of Willsboro and medical inspector of the Willsboro School Depart- ment. A member of the Essex Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Hayes, who attends St. Phillip's Church, is active in the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, an organization which he directed as president while a student at Albany Medical College. Fond of hunting and fishing and outdoor life as a means of recrea- tion from his professional duties and public responsibilities, Dr. Hayes is a member of the Campfire Club of America and belongs to the Fish and Game League of Essex County, having served the latter organization as a president.


Albert L. Hayes married Irene B. Wood, a native of Plattsburg who was educated in that city and graduated as a registered nurse from the Nurses' Training School of the Albany City Hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Hayes are the parents of two children : 1. Sylvia, born in 1928 at Plattsburg. 2. Albert, Jr., born at Plattsburg in 1935.

ERALD FAIRBANKS FOSTER, M. D .- A member of the Burling- ton medical profession for the past eleven years, Dr. Erald Fairbanks Foster, the city health officer, is recognized as one of the leading physicians and sur- geons in this locality, catering to a select and extensive practice.


Dr. Foster was born at Coventry, Vermont, May 21, 1902, the son of Howard E. and Leora (Fairbanks) Foster. Howard E. Foster, born at Brownington, Vermont, October 9, 1879, has been engaged in the farming industry at Lyndonville for many years. Leora (Fairbanks) Foster was born at Newark, Vermont, on March 23, 1883.


After completing his elementary education, Dr. Foster enrolled at Lyndon Institute, where he was a member of the class of 1921. He then matriculated at the University of Vermont and finished his academic courses in 1925. He continued his medical studies at this institution and was graduated, in 1927, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. For the next year he served an interneship at Mary Fletcher Hospital, and he then opened his offices at Bur- lington, where he has since been successfully engaged as a physician and sur- geon.


Since his original appointment in 1929, Dr. Foster has served continuously as health officer of the city of Burlington. He has been local medical ex- aminer for the United States Department of Commerce, Aeronautics Divi- sion, for the past eight years, and he is also a member of the University of Vermont medical faculty as clinical instructor of preventive medicine and hygiene. He is assistant surgeon on the staff of Mary Fletcher Hospital, and is also engaged as consulting surgeon at the Fanny Allen and the Bishop De Goesbriand hospitals.
