HILTON H. DIER, M. D., C. M .- In the comparatively few years that Dr. Hilton H. Dier has been a resident and physician of Lake George, he has achieved reputation in his profession, and citizenship, which have made him both popular and valued. He is Canadian born, and acquired his formal

education and technical training in Canadian institutions, although the most of his practice has been in New York State.


Dr. Dier is a native of Westport, Province of Ontario, Canada, born March 25, 1899, son of James and Adelaide (Cameron) Dier. His father, of Irish birth, was a carriage manufacturer at the time of his death. Mrs. Dier, who was born in Westport, Canada, is still living. Hilton H. Dier began his secondary education in Calgary Collegiate Institute and pursued pre-medical, and some medical, studies in the University of Alberta. For his technical work he ma- triculated at McGill University, Montreal, from which he was graduated a member of the class of 1924 with the degrees of Doctor of Medicine and Master in Surgery. He interned in the Montreal General Hospital for a year : spent a year in this institution as admitting officer, and for three months served as as- sistant superintendent of the hospital. From October, 1926, to October, 1934, he was assistant superintendent of the Albany (New York) Hospital, in the latter-named year and month removing to Lake George, where he has since been engaged in a general practice of medicine. He is an associate of the staff of the Glens Falls Hospital. His professional connections are extensive, ranging from memberships in the Glens Falls Academy of Medicine and the Warren County Medical Society, to the New York State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Dr. Dier has been physician to the schools of Lake George since 1935. His professional fraternity is Zeta Psi.


During the World War, in August, 1916, at Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Dr. Dier enlisted for service, and in December, 1916, went overseas in the Canadian Corps, Cyclist's Battalion, and served with distinction throughout the entire war.


In 1925 Dr. Hilton H. Dier married Margaret McFarlane, a native of Toronto, Canada, and they are the parents of two sons: Hilton H., Jr., and John G. Dier.


STUART F. HAWLEY-Since 1925, Stuart F. Hawley has served as county clerk of Warren County. He has been associated with the county clerk's office throughout his career and on his record is recognized as an able and qualified public official.


Mr. Hawley was born at Lake George on April 6, 1892, son of Fred F. and Clara (Smith) Hawley. His father, also born in this community, has served as postmaster here for over thirty years and is now mayor of the village. The mother, born in Queensbury, is deceased.


Stuart F. Hawley was educated in the public schools of Lake George and after completing the high school course, attended Albany Business College. In 1914 he first became associated with the county clerk's office, where he was employed at first as a stenographer and afterward assumed larger respon-

sibilities in conducting the business of the office. In 1925, when he was chosen county clerk of Warren County, he was thoroughly equipped by the experi- ence of a decade to meet the duties of the position and has since administered the office without interruption and to the complete satisfaction of the people of the county. From 1915 to 1925 Mr. Hawley was also village clerk of the village of Lake George. He is a Republican in politics and is influential in local councils of his party as well as in the general civic life of the community in which he makes his home.


Mr. Hawley is a trustee of the Lake George Library, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Dinner Club, and is active fraternally in Glens Falls Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; St. Sacrament Lodge, No. 1029, Free and Accepted Masons; and Lake George, No. 912, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He has been especially prominent in the Odd Fellows, serving as Noble Grand of Lake George Lodge and Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of the State of New York in past years, and is a member of the board of trustees of the Grand Lodge Home and Orphanage at the present time. During the World War, on July 14, 1918, Mr. Hawley enlisted in the National Army and was assigned to Company E, 422d Tele- graph Battalion, Signal Corps. He went abroad with the American Expedi- tionary Forces and served in France for a number of months, receiving his honorable discharge in March, 1919, with the rank of sergeant. Since its organization he has been a member of Lake George Post, American Legion. Mr. Hawley is a member of the Methodist Church, and finds his principal recreation in golf.


He married, in 1917, Emma Owens, who was born in Warrensburg, and they are the parents of two children : Kathryn Joyce and Charles.


THOMAS J. McCARTHY-A well-known Glens Falls attorney, and a member of the firm of McPhillips, Fitzgerald and McCarthy, Thomas J. McCarthy was born at St. Jullienne, Quebec, Canada, November 23, 1890, the son of James W. and Margaret (Nulty) McCarthy, both deceased. James W. McCarthy, also a native of St. Jullienne, was engaged in the paper- making industry at Ticonderoga, New York, at the time of his death. Mar- garet (Nulty) McCarthy was born in Rawdon, Quebec, Canada.


Thomas J. McCarthy received his elementary and high school educa- tion in the public schools of Ticonderoga, New York, and then he went to New York City to enroll at the College of the City of New York. After two years of pre-law study at that institution, he entered the New York Law School, from which he was graduated in 1913 with the degree of Bachelor of Laws. The following year he received the degree of Master of Laws from the same institution, and in 1916 successfully passed the State bar examina-

tion, becoming a member of the New York legal fraternity. He then became associated with his present partners in the general practice of law, and later became a member of the firm. In his more than twenty years of legal prac- tice, Mr. McCarthy has become a most successful attorney, and is highly regarded both by his colleagues and the many who comprise his clientele. During the World War he served in the Aviation Corps of the United States Army, and received his honorable discharge with the rank of corporal.


Mr. McCarthy is a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, and is affiliated with the Glens Falls Council, Knights of Columbus. He is a director of the Warren County Bar Association, and a member of the New York State Bar Association. He is also a member of the American Legion.


Mr. McCarthy was married, in 1919, to Katheryn Carroll, a native of Albany.


ALLEN M. LIGHT-One of the leading attorneys of Clinton County, Allen M. Light of Plattsburg is not only active in the practice of his profession but also generous of his time and talents in the public service, hav- ing held office as a city judge and district attorney.


Allen M. Light was born at Morrisonville, Clinton County, July 13, 1905, son of William and Susan (Allen) Light. William Light, who was born in Morrisonville, established himself in life as a merchant, a calling in which he remains active as well as serving his community as postmaster. Susan (Allen) Light, who is a native of Plattsburg, is a direct descendant of Ethan Allen, Revolutionary hero of Green Mountain Boys fame.


After passing through the grammar schools of Morrisonville and graduat- ing from the Morrisonville High School, Allen M. Light, selecting the legal profession for his career, attended the Albany Law School, graduating from the institution with the class of 1926 as a Bachelor of Laws. Admitted to the New York State bar in 1927, Mr. Light came to Plattsburg and established himself in the general practice of his profession, maintaining his office in Plattsburg through the present time. Supporting his profession through membership in the Clinton County Bar Association, Mr. Light, who is a member of the Democratic party, is deeply interested in civic and community concerns and gives much of his time beyond the demands of his profession to public service, having served as a city judge in Plattsburg in 1930 and 1931 and having given a year to the School Board of Morrisonville. A member of Schuyler Falls Grange, No. 1021, Patrons of Husbandry, Mr. Light finds recreation in his enjoyment of the game of baseball, a sport of which he is an ardent fan.


Allen M. Light married, May, 1933, Dorothy Hoag, who was born in Keeseville, Essex County, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Light are the parents of a son : William Andrew.

ARTHUR H. IRISH-Assistant postmaster at Warrensburg, and an active civic leader in this section, Arthur H. Irish was born here December 20, 1897, the son of Warren Irish, a native of Joplin, Missouri, and Myra (Underwood) Irish, a native of Essex County, New York.


Arthur H. Irish acquired his education in the Warrensburg schools, and after completing his high school studies he entered the employ of the War- rensburg post office, in a clerical capacity. He has steadily served this gov- ernment unit to the present day, and since January, 1928, has held the office of assistant postmaster, in which position he has aided greatly in the develop- ment of postal service in this community. In addition to this work, he has also acted as assistant chief of the local fire department for a period of twelve years.


He is a member of the board of stewards of the Methodist Church, a staunch Republican, and an affiliate of the Warrensburg Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Encampment, of which he is Past Patriarch and District Deputy Patriarch. He is also a member of the Boy Scout Coun- cil, and served for several years as scoutmaster.


Mr. Irish was married, April 23, 1919, to Nellie Brooks, a native of Indian Lake, New York, and they are the parents of three children: I. Arthur H., Jr. 2. Naomi. 3. Karl E. Irish.


HERRICK OSBORNE-For the past thirteen years, Herrick Osborne has been a civil engineer in the employ of the Warren County High- way Department, and a popular figure in Warrensburg civic life. He was born here May 22, 1899, the son of Edwin and Lillie (Herrick) Osborne. Edwin Osborne, a native of Horicon, New York, is retired. Lillie (Herrick) Osborne is a native of this locality.


Herrick Osborne received his early education at the high school and Cor- nell University, being a member of the class of 1925 of the latter institution. Upon completion of his college work he became associated with the Warren County Highway Department, and has served as engineer on many construc- tion projects. In addition to his engineering duties, Mr. Osborne also inter- ests himself in local affairs, and is a trustee of both the Richards Free Library and the Cemetery Association. He also serves as chief of the Warrensburg Fire Department.


He is an active member of the Episcopal Church, where he serves as a lay reader and as clerk of the vestry. In his political allegiance he is a supporter of the Republican party, and he is a well-known Mason, being Past Master of Warrensburg Lodge, No. 425, Free and Accepted Masons, Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Saratoga Warren District, and Past High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter of Masons at Warrensburg. membership in the New York Society of Professional Engineers, the Ameri- can Legion and the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.


He was married, in 1931, to Lillian Bailey, a native of Potsdam, New York, and they are the parents of a daughter, Joan Carol Osborne.


BERRY WADSWORTH WOODWARD -- A well-known Warrens- burg mortician, and the proprietor of one of the oldest funeral parlors in Warren County, Berry Wadsworth Woodward was born here, October 16, 1876, the son of Leander and Susan ( Brannock) Woodward, both natives of New York State and both deceased.


After completing his public and high school education in the Warrensburg schools. Berry Wadsworth Woodward became associated with the Emerson National Bank, where he remained for six years. Then, together with his brother, J. H. Woodward, he entered the furniture and undertaking business, and this partnership continued until 1920 when complete control of the busi- ness was purchased by Berry Wadsworth Woodward. He operated this business most successfully until 1934, at which time he disposed of his furni- ture interests in order to devote his entire time to the undertaking field. He is the only mortician in Warrensburg, and this business has been in existence for seventy-three years, having been founded in 1865 by Fred W. Herrick.


Mr. Woodward is a member of the Episcopal Church, and is affiliated with Glens Falls Lodge, No. 81, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.


Mr. Woodward married Susie Eldridge, a native of Johnsburg, and they became the parents of a son, Preston, since deceased.


DR. JOHN E. CUNNINGHAM-A practicing physician in Warrens- burg throughout his medical career, Dr. John E. Cunningham was born at Long Lake, New York, the son of Patrick J. and Kathleen ( Butler) Cun- ningham. Patrick J. Cunningham, a native of Chestertown, is an employee of the New York State Department of Conservation. Kathleen (Butler) Cunningham is a native of Olmstedville, New York.


After completing his early education in the public schools of Long Lake, Dr. Cunningham entered North Creek High School, and later matriculated at Union College, being a member of the class of 1927. He next enrolled at Albany Medical College, where he received his degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1930. He served a two-year interneship at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, and then came to Warrensburg to launch his private practice. He has con- tinued here to the present day and is recognized as a most capable member of the medical fraternity, enjoying an extensive and select clientele. At present he is a member of the associate staff of Glens Falls Hospital.

He is a communicant of St. Cecilia's Roman Catholic Church, and is affiliated with the Warren County, New York State and American Medical associations and the Glens Falls Academy of Medicine. He is also a member of Phi Delta Theta and Nu Sigma Nu fraternities, and being a skiing and golfing enthusiast, holds membership in the Queens Village Golf Club, War- rensburg Ski Club and the Gore Mountain Golf Club.


Dr. Cunningham was married, in 1930, to Helen Lepper, a native of Fort Johnson, New York. Dr. and Mrs. Cunningham are the parents of three children : I. Patricia J. 2. John Edmund. 3. Mary Anne Cunningham.


HARRY P. KEHOE, prominent Plattsburg lawyer, and local cor- poration counsel for the past six years, was born at Willsboro, Essex County, February 27, 1896, the son of Michael and Mary (Ryan) Kehoe, both de- ceased. Michael Kehoe, also a native of Willsboro, was employed in the iron mines during his early years and afterwards entered the farming industry, in which he was engaged at the time of his death. Mary (Ryan) Kehoe was born at Au Sable Forks, Clinton County.


Harry P. Kehoe secured his early education in the public and high schools of Willsboro, and later enrolled at Albany Law School, where he received his degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1920. He successfully fulfilled his State requirements later in the same year, and immediately after his admission to the bar he established offices in Plattsburg, where he has ever since enjoyed an extensive legal practice. For the past eight years he has been a member of the firm of Boire and Kehoe, and he has also been prominently identified with public office, serving as Deputy Attorney General of the State of New York from 1923 to 1925, acting city judge of the city of Plattsburg from 1927 to 1930, and from 1932 to the present time as corporation counsel for the city of Plattsburg. He is also a trustee of the New York State Supreme Court Library, and has at all times been a leading figure in local civic activities. During the World War he was connected with the War Trade Board.


Mr. Kehoe is a communicant of St. John's Roman Catholic Church, and an active member of the Democratic committee. He is affiliated with Council No. 255, Knights of Columbus, at Plattsburg; Plattsburg Lodge, No. 621, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; New York State Historical Society ; and the Clinton County, New York State and American Bar associations. He also holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce and the Rod and Gun Club. Among his chief hobbies are historical research, old glass and the col- lection of antique clocks.


He was married, in 1930, to Elizabeth Hawkins, of Plattsburg, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George K. Hawkins.

FRANKLIN E. PASCO-Associated with the Schroon River Pulp and Paper Company for the past fourteen years, Franklin E. Pasco is now superintendent of this nationally known plant and also serves as secretary of this company, whose products are used throughout this country. He was born at Thurman, New York, June 5, 1897, the son of the late Gilbert and Fannie (Everts) Pasco. Gilbert Pasco, a native of Johnsburg, New York, was engaged as a lumberman and cattle dealer for many years previous to his death. Fannie (Everts) Pasco, the daughter of Harvey Everts, a Civil War veteran, is now residing in Warrensburg.


After securing his early education in the Thurman district schools, Franklin E. Pasco enrolled at Warrensburg High School, and later attended Albany Business College. Upon completion of his school work, he secured employment with the United States Rubber Company in Albany, and re- mained there until June 9, 1918, when he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve Corps, where he continued until his honorable discharge in March, 1919. For the next two years he was engaged in construction work in Brook- lyn, New York, and then came to Warrensburg, working at various positions until 1924, when he became an employee of the Schroon River Pulp and Paper Company. He first served as bookkeeper, later as cost accountant, and in August, 1929, was promoted to the position of superintendent, which post he has filled most satisfactorily to the present day. He has also, for the past several years, served as secretary of this organization. In addition to this work, he also serves as director and vice-president of the Warrens- burg Shirt Company, and is considered one of the leading business men in this locality.


Mr. Pasco is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is active in Republican politics, being a former constable and town assessor and for the past six years, justice of the peace. He is also a member of the Warrens- burg Republican Town Committee, and from 1932 to 1935, served as chair- man of the Warren County Emergency Work Bureau. He is also a member of the American Pulp and Paper Superintendents' Association, and fraternally is affiliated with Warrensburg Lodge, No. 425, Free and Accepted Masons, being Past Master and former trustee of this body. He was also a member of the executive board of the Mohegan Council, Boy Scouts of America, treasurer of the local Kiwanis Club, and a member of the American Legion and the Warrensburg Ski Club.


Mr. Pasco was married, in 1924, to Marguerite Goodman, a native of Warrensburg, and a graduate of the Teachers' Training College at Schenec- tady, New York, and they became the parents of a son, Gilbert, since deceased.

PAUL C. BOSSE-Owner and editor of the "Warrensburg News," Paul C. Bosse was born in New York City, December 4, 1907, the son of Paul H. and Eleanor (Rottach) Bosse. Paul H. Bosse, also a native of New York City, is at present engaged in the metal etching field in Chicago. Eleanor (Rottach) Bosse is a native of New York City.


Paul C. Bosse received his public and high school education in the schools at Pelham, New York, and then attended McBurney Preparatory School, after which he enrolled at Lafayette College, graduating in 1929 with the degree of Bachelor of Science. After several postgraduate courses at Colum- bia University, he became associated with the Blanchard Press in New York City. He remained there for one year, and then engaged independently in research work until 1938, when he came to Warrensburg, and purchased the paper of which he is now the editor and sole owner.


Mr. Bosse is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and is affiliated with the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and the local Kiwanis Club. He also holds membership in the American Physicological Association.


He was married, in 1933, to Anne Gillette, a native of Northport, Long Island.


FRANK C. SHERMAN-Under sheriff of Warren County, Frank C. Sherman, of Lake George, is not only one of the leading real estate business practitioners of his community but also widely known throughout Eastern New York State from his former association with both the jewelry trade and the retailing of automobiles and food products.


Frank C. Sherman was born in Easton, Washington County, October 12, 1880, son of Charles H. and Emma (Phelterplace) Sherman. Charles H. Sherman, a native of Washington County, spent many years as a painter and decorator, an occupation in which he was engaged at the time of his death. Emma (Phelterplace) Sherman, his wife, also deceased, was born in Warren County.


After passing through the public schools of Glens Falls and graduating from the Glens Falls High School, Frank C. Sherman spent six years with the jewelry establishment of George Bassiger, of Glens Falls, where he learned the jewelry business. Following this association, Mr. Sherman worked for three years with the firm of Hayes Brothers, also jewelers of Glens Falls, and then, going to New York City, spent a year with Saks and Company, as an assistant buyer for that organization's jewelry department. Following this varied experience, Mr. Sherman, determined to establish his own business, went to Hudson Falls where he founded a jewelry enterprise, a business which he conducted for a period of about ten years while, at the same time, he branched out into other activities, becoming a part-owner and vice-president

of the Adirondack Motor Car Company, as well as being the treasurer and general manager of the Harry E. Swan Company chain of food shops-this latter activity occupying his attention for about five years. Finally, Mr. Sherman disposed of his interests in Hudson Falls and removed to Lake George, where he established himself in the real estate business, an enterprise in which he has continued through the present time. Always interested in public affairs, Mr. Sherman has been particularly active in civic concerns since he established himself in Lake George and, as a member of the Republican party, has come to play a leading rĂ´le, being made undersheriff of Warren County in 1937, a position which he has occupied through the present time, and being appointed chairman of the Special Fishing Committee of the Lake George Association, a post to which he was attracted through his keen interest in fishing as a sport and as a means of recreation. A member of Sandy Hill Lodge. Free and Accepted Masons, Mr. Sherman also belongs to Glens Falls Lodge, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and Lake George Lodge, No. 912, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He attends the Lake George Christian Science Church.


Frank C. Sherman married, in 1910, Cora E. Ellsworth, who is a native of Lake George. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman are the parents of a daughter, Calista Caroline.


WILLIAM HENRY FAXON-In the days when Warren County was an important center of hemlock tanning of leather, William Henry Faxon became associated with his father in a tannery and is today the oldest living man in this part of the country who once engaged in that now defunct indus- try. He is a native of Chestertown, born August 18, 1846, son of Charles Henry and Caroline Adelia (Smith) Faxon, the latter of whom came origi- nally from Schroon Lake, New York. Charles Henry Faxon was born in Troy, New York, December 26, 1816, and was engaged in the lumbering and leather business until his death on April 24, 1900. Throughout his life he was an important citizen of Warren County.


The Faxons trace their ancestry to one Thomas Faxon, born in England in 1601, who migrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and settled at Brain- tree in 1647, where he was a "freeman" in 1657, and represented the town in the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The line comes down through Jacob Allen Faxon, who was a Continental soldier during the Revo- lutionary War.


William Henry Faxon, of this record, was educated in the district schools of Chestertown and Fort Edward Institute, supplementing his academic studies with courses in Eastman Business College, one of the outstanding business schools of that day. From the Poughkeepsie college he went to New
