JESSIE SANFORD ROBERTSON-Jessie Sanford Robertson, of Bolton Landing, is a native of New York City, educated at the Reed School, of New York City, and is a daughter of Touro and Maria Elizabeth (San- ford) Robertson. Her father, who saw three months' service in the Union Army in the Civil War, resigning because of ill health, was vice-president of the American Bank Note Company and an inventor. He was the owner of one of the cottages next to the lake on the old Lake House property. Miss Robertson is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church.

C. Everett Bacon was born at Westbrook, Connecticut, August 18, 1890, son of Clarence Everett and Katherine Sedgewick (Whiting) Bacon. Clarence Everett Bacon was a distinguished member of the legal profession, Katherine Sedgewick (Whiting) Bacon, his wife, was a descendant of Colonel Nathan Whiting, a Revolutionary officer, who was active in the battle of Lake George and was second in command at Fort William Henry in 1756.


After graduating from the Middletown, Connecticut, High School, as a member of the class of 1909, C. Everett Bacon entered Wesleyan University, graduating in 1913. That same year he went to New York City and began his career in the investment banking field, rising rapidly until ten years later, in 1923, he became a partner of the firm of Spencer Trask and Company. In addition Mr. Bacon is a vice-president and director of the Broadway Realty Corporation, and director of Spencer Trask Fund, Inc. He is also deeply interested in political activity as a member of the Republican party and gives generously of his time and ability to various educational institutions, being a trustee of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, a trustee of Spel- man College, a trustee of Atlanta University, a trustee of Morehouse and Bennett colleges, and a trustee of the Southern Education Foundation. Dur- ing the World War, Mr. Bacon's career in investment banking was inter- rupted by his service with the United States Army, a service which began with enlistment in the 312th Infantry and concluded with his service as a lieu- tenant in the 48th Field Artillery, 16th Division. A member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity of Wesleyan University, Mr. Bacon is a member of the board of governors of the Sagamore Golf Club, an office which he has maintained since the club was organized, and is a member of the Downtown Association of New York City, the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City, and the Montclair Golf Club of Montclair, New Jersey. Formerly a vestryman of St. Luke's Church in Montclair, New Jersey, Mr. Bacon is now a vestryman of the Church of St. Sacrament (Episcopal), Bolton Landing, New York. He is also president of the board of trustees, Montclair, New Jersey, Com- munity Chest.


C. Everett Bacon married, in Brooklyn, New York, November 6, 1915, Eva Peabody, daughter of Charles Jones and Helen (Hoyt) Peabody, and a niece of George Foster Peabody. Mr. and Mrs. Bacon are the parents of a daughter : Anne Peabody Bacon, born December 29, 1930.


MRS. CHRISTINE (MANS) KNAPP-Widely known in Bolton Landing for her constructive civic work, Mrs. Christine (Mans) Knapp is the wife of James R. Knapp and one of the community's widely known citizens.

Mrs. Knapp was born January 1, 1879, in San Francisco, California, daughter of Albert and Louise (Beale) Mans. Her father was extensively engaged in business.


Private schools in California provided the early education of Christine Mans, who early in life turned her attention to community work of one kind and another. In 1933 she established the Community Center in Bolton Land- ing. In 1935 she set up in Bolton Landing the James R. Knapp Club, named after her husband, an organization for the recreation and education of the men of the town. She is deeply interested in political activities, being a Republican in her partisan views and a member of the Bolton Town Board of Justice, to which she was chosen in 1935, beginning her term of office in January, 1936. She is a member of St. Thomas' Protestant Episcopal Church, of New York City.


The marriage of Christine Mans to James R. Knapp took place in San Francisco, California.


FRANK J. DWYER-For thirty years one of the leading funeral directors of Burlington, Vermont, Frank J. Dwyer was also one of the out- standing citizens of his municipality, serving both as a member of the Board of Aldermen and as a school committeeman.


Frank J. Dwyer was born at Burlington, August 10, 1874, son of Edward and Mary (Boyle) Dwyer. Edward Dwyer established himself in the livery business, an occupation in which he remained active until the time of his death. Mary (Boyle) Dwyer, his wife, is also deceased.


After passing through the elementary schools of Burlington, Frank J. Dwyer attended St. Joseph's College here, graduating as a member of the class of 1894. For eight years after completing his education he was employed by the Green Company, dealers in oils and paint, an association which ended in 1902, when Mr. Dwyer purchased the funeral director's establishment of J. R. Kelley. During the years which followed, Mr. Dwyer developed his enterprise to a leading position in Burlington, creating a widely known business which has been conducted since 1932 by his widow, Mrs. Margaret (Fallon) Dwyer. Always deeply interested in civic welfare and in political problems as a member of the Democratic party, Frank J. Dwyer gave himself freely to public life, serving two terms on the Burlington Board of Aldermen from the Third Ward, and also being a member of the Burlington School Committee. Supporting his profession by membership in the National Funeral Directors' Association, Mr. Dwyer was a member of Burlington Council, Knights of Columbus and belonged to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Cathedral Church, of which institution he was a member. During his boyhood familiar with horses, Mr. Dwyer continued to devote himself to them during his life

and found in riding and driving a means of recreation from his business responsibilities and his public duties.


Frank J. Dwyer married, in 1906, Margaret Fallon, a native of Burlington. Mr. and Mrs. Dwyer were the parents of two children : I. Mary C., who was a graduate of Georgia College, class of 1930, and is now a teacher in the Bur- lington High School. 2. Ursula, who was a graduate of Vermont University, class of 1929, and died June 10, 1935.


Frank J. Dwyer passed away in 1932, leaving not only a wide group of intimate friends to mourn him but also a host of acquaintances who had learned to respect his ability and integrity in business life as well as in the public service.


LYLE E. ROBERTS-Throughout his professional career, which dates back to 1925, Lyle E. Roberts has served as principal of the Newcomb Central School in Newcomb, New York, where he has also been active in social and civic affairs.


Mr. Roberts was born at Middlefield, Otsego County, New York, Decem- ber 2, 1902, the son of Leon H. and Ora B. Roberts. His father, who engaged in farming until 1927, has operated a grocery business since that date. Mr. Roberts completed a general education at the Schenevus High School in 1919 and in 1921 matriculated at the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, where he majored in chemistry, took courses in biology and gov- ernment and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1925. Later he won his Master of Arts degree at Cornell University, having majored in educational administration.


Mr. Roberts is a member of the Kappa Delta Rho, national undergraduate fraternity ; Phi Delta Kappa, professional educational fraternity ; and frater- nizes with the Masonic Order. He is also a member of the New York State Teachers' Association and the National Education Association. He is a Republican in politics and is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1938 and 1939 he was vice-president of the Northeastern Zone of the York State Teachers' Association, and is now president for the year 1939-40.


On June 26, 1926, at Schenevus, Otsego County, Mr. Roberts married Alma E. Becker, daughter of Horatio P. and Helen Becker. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts are the parents of one child, Margery Ann, who was born May 27, 1928.


STEPHEN J. CARHART-One of the veterans of the advertising business, and to a certain extent, a pioneer, Stephen J. Carhart has made major contributions to the development of a number of places in New York. He founded the Carhart Advertising Company in 1912, and expanded its

activities until he had offices in Burlington, Vermont; Plattsburg, Kingston, Middletown and Watervliet, in New York. He achieved high repute in his field of operations until 1925, when he sold his interests. Since that time he has been the owner of the Luzerne Villa Hotel and Golf Course, both of which he started and later incorporated. He is president of this company, which operates one of the popular establishments in the Lake Champlain, Lake George region.


Mr. Carhart was born in Watervliet, New York, July 20, 1888, son of Samuel and Mary E. (Norton) Carhart, both natives of Watervliet and both deceased. His father engaged in merchandising the larger part of his mature years. Stephen J. Carhart received his academic education in the parochial schools of his birthplace, and went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for his business training. He has always been to the fore in movements and organizations which make for the progress of the places with which he has been identified, and with the welfare of their citizens. As might be suspected, he is very fond of golf, and another of his hobbies is building. He and his wife are of the Catholic faith.


Stephen J. Carhart, in 1935, married Catherine Phetteplace, a native of Glens Falls, New York, and they have a son, Stephen Guy Carhart.


PHILIP J. FITZSIMONS-For the past fifteen years Philip J. Fitzsimons has served as principal of the Minerva High School at Olmsted- ville and in this capacity has come to be ranked among the prominent educa- tional figures of Essex County. Prior to coming here he had taught in other sections of the State and acquired an experience that eminently fitted him for his present responsibilities.


Mr. Fitzsimons was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 25, 1900, the son of Dr. Philip M. Fitzsimons, a physician, and Margaret (Dunnigan) Fitzsimons. He completed a general education at the West Rutland High School in Vermont in 1918, and then matriculated at Holy Cross College, at Worcester, Massachusetts, from which he was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the class of 1922. After that he studied at St. Lawrence University where he was awarded a Master of Arts degree in 1930.


The year he finished his training at Holy Cross College he began his career as principal of the school system in Helena, New York, where he remained until 1924. The following year he taught at the schools of Catskill and in September, 1925, came to his present post at Olmstedville which he has occupied since with distinction and success. Mr. Fitzsimons is a member of the Schoolmasters Club here and worships at the Roman Catholic Church.


On August 5, 1939, at Olmstedville, Mr. Fitzsimons married Florence Owens, daughter of John Owens.

WALTER SAMUEL FENTON-Widely known as one of Rutland's foremost members of the bar, Walter Samuel Fenton has also served his city and his State in a number of public offices.


Mr. Fenton was born July 12, 1886, at Pittsford, Vermont, son of Henry S. and Belle C. (Hudson) Fenton, both natives of Pittsford. His grand- father, Charles J. Fenton, who held the office of town clerk for seventeen years, was a prominent man in his day. Henry S. Fenton, the father, who is now deceased, was for thirty years a commercial salesman. The family resided continuously either in Rutland or Pittsford after 1785, the year in which Mr. Fenton's ancestors removed from Rutland, Massachusetts, to Rutland, Vermont.


Walter Samuel Fenton attended the Pittsford public schools, and he was graduated from high school in 1901. Afterward he completed his business course at Rutland Business College in the winter of 1902. He then took employment as a stenographer with the Hon. Carroll S. Page, of Hyde Park, formerly Governor and later United States Senator. Then, continuing his stenographic work in the employ of different firms until 1905, Mr. Fenton matriculated, in September of that year, at the Law School of Syracuse Uni- versity, Syracuse, New York, where he studied for two years. He then entered the law offices of Charles L. Howe, of Rutland, with whom he finished his law studies. On November 5, 1909, he took the State bar examination, and, admitted to the bar, he began the formal practice of his profession. At the outset, for six years, from 1909 to 1915, he maintained offices with Judge Howe. Then, between 1915 and April 1, 1924, he had offices in the Gryphon Building. He then joined the partnership of Fenton, Wing and Morse, at Rutland, establishing offices with them in the Mead Building.


Aside from his work in the professional circle, he served between 1908 and 1915 as a justice of the peace here. In 1915 and 1916 he was city attor- ney of Rutland. In 1917 he was elected a representative to the General Assembly of Vermont, acting in that body as chairman of the committee on State and court expenses and as a member of the committees on joint rules and on judiciary and temperance. He was executive clerk for Governor Percival W. Clement from 1919 to 1921, and served from 1920 to 1924 as a member of the board of school commissioners. He was president of that board in the last three years of his membership on it.


Fraternally Mr. Fenton was connected with Center Lodge, No. 34, of the Free and Accepted Masons at an early period in his life, and he was Master of that lodge in 1914. He is now serving as Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Vermont. He belongs also to Davenport Chapter, No. 17, of Royal Arch Masons, Killington Commandery, No. 6, Knights Templar, Vermont Consistory, Scottish Rite, and also is a Shriner. Vermont Lodge,

No. I, of the Knights of Pythias, of Rutland, claims him also as a member, and he is active likewise in the Rutland Country Club. He is a member of the Rutland Chamber of Commerce, of whose board of governors he has twice been a member. He belongs to the Rutland County Bar Association, of which he has been president ; the Vermont State Bar Association, of which he was president in 1927 ; and the American Bar Association, serving on the board of governors of that association from 1936 to 1939. He is an associate member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.


Walter Samuel Fenton married, December 28, 1910, Marion Babbitt, daughter of Thomas and Florence (Spear) Babbitt. Their children were: I. Jane Carolyn Fenton. 2. Mary Elizabeth Fenton. The family are mem- bers of the Congregational Church.


GEORGE ANDREW CHAPMAN, M. D .- Throughout his medical career, which dates back to 1897, Dr. George Andrew Chapman has con- ducted a general practice of medicine in the city of Glens Falls where he has come to enjoy an enviable professional reputation and is prominently identi- fied with the social and civic life of the community.


Dr. Chapman was born in Glens Falls, November 3, 1871, the son of William and Katherine Chapman. After completing a general education at the Glens Falls High School in 1891 he matriculated at the Baltimore Med- ical School, from which he was graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in the class of 1897. Later he supplemented this training with postgraduate work at Edinburgh, Scotland, and at the University of Maryland, which he attended in 1913. The same year he received his professional degree he established himself in Glens Falls where with Drs. William R. Keyes and Lemon Thomson, he became a founder of the first Glens Falls Hospital which functioned as a private institution from 1897 to 1901. Since he came here Dr. Chapman has been active and prominent in several of the leading med- ical institutions of this section. He had a very active part in bringing about the establishment of the Westmount Sanitorium for the treatment of tuber- culosis, the Warren County Laboratory, and a full time health officer in the city of Glens Falls. He is secretary of the local hospital staff, attending phy- sician to the Glens Falls Hospital, a member and former president of the Warren County Medical Society which he represented as delegate at the annual convention of the New York State Medical Society about 1908, also belongs to the latter organization, the American Association for the Advance- ment of Science, the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association, the Academy of Medicine, and is a Fellow of the Amer- ican College of Physicians. Dr. Chapman has been health officer of the town of Queensbury since 1906, and was formerly a member of the board of health of the city of Glens Falls.

Dr. Chapman is a Republican in politics, fraternizes with Lodge No. 456, Free and Accepted Masons, Chapter No. 55, Royal Arch Masons; Com- mandery No. 69, Knights Templar; the Albany Consistory, Ancient Ac- cepted Scottish Rite; Oriental Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of which he is a charter member, and was for many years director of the Masonic Club. Dr. Chapman is a member of the Baltimore Chapter of the Phi Chi medical fraternity, member of St. Andrew's Society of Scots, and the president in 1926, and for many years vice-president of the Troy Burns Club, and a member of the New York State Historical Society. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church. During the Spanish-American War he enlisted and became a member of the local company which was part of the 118th Regiment of the New York National Guard.


In 1903, at Newark, New Jersey, Dr. Chapman married Lucy Wooster, daughter of Reuben and Mary Wooster, and they became the parents of two children : I. Montgomery Wooster, born in 1904. 2. Katharine Mary Lock- wood (Chapman) Francis, born in 1911, the wife of Dr. Herbert C. Francis, associate professor of roentgenology at the Vanderbilt Clinic, Nashville, Tennessee.


NATHAN GIFFORD, M. S .- Since being graduated from Syracuse University in 1931, Nathan Gifford has made a career of education. He already has won his ranking in his profession and has the qualities of vision, sound judgment and vigorous enterprise which give promise of further achievements and standing.


Mr. Gifford is a native of Medusa, New York, born May I, 1905, son of George M. Gifford, also a native of Medusa, Albany County, and Louisa (Hull) Gifford, who was born at Durham, New York. Reared on his father's farm, Nathan Gifford attended local schools and prepared for college in the Greene (New York) High School. Matriculating at Syracuse University, he was graduated in 1931 a Bachelor of Science. In 1934 he received his degree of Master of Science from his alma mater. In the fall of 1931 Mr. Gifford became a teacher of science in the Junior High School, of Watertown, New York. After a single scholastic year he went to Cape Vincent, Northern New York State, where he was vice-principal of the high school until after the June, 1935, commencement. From September, 1935, to June. 1937, he was principal of the La Fargeville (New York) High School.


Since September. 1937, Mr. Gifford has been principal of the Warrensburg High School. Not only has he expanded the curriculum of his school and effected improvements in administration, but has inaugurated a new central school which will be the fourth new school building in the history of the town. As in other places he has entered heartily into local life and affairs. He is

a charter member of the Kiwanis Club at Warrensburg, and a member of the Grange, Patrons of Husbandry, at La Fargeville. Fraternally, he is affiliated with La Fargeville Lodge, No. 171, Free and Accepted Masons. His college and professional fraternities are Alpha Chi Sigma and Kappa Phi Kappa of Syracuse University, and he is a member of the National Principals Associa- tion. He is interested in outdoor sports, more especially hunting and fishing. He attends the Methodist Church.


In June, 1932, Nathan Gifford married Lillian Randall, a native of Syra- cuse, and they are the parents of two children: Allan Randall and Roger David Gifford.


CHARLES FRANCIS RYAN-Charles Francis Ryan, a prominent member of the Rutland legal fraternity, and a leading figure in local civic and fraternal life, is a native of New York State, having been born at Middle Granville, January 16, 1901, the son of Charles F. and Elizabeth (Radigan) Ryan, both deceased. Charles F. Ryan, born at Rutland in 1874, followed the blacksmith trade in this locality for many years prior to his death in 1921. Elizabeth (Radigan) Ryan, born at Castleton, Vermont, in 1869, departed this life in 19II.


Charles Francis Ryan acquired his early education in the public schools of Castleton and Rutland, and after graduating from Rutland High School in 1920, he enrolled at Middlebury College, where he was graduated in 1926 with his Bachelor of Science degree. He then prepared for a legal career by reading law in the offices of Fenton, Wing and Morse, and after being admitted to the bar in 1929, he became associated with that firm, and has, since that time distinguished himself in his profession, being recognized as a most able attorney, and a practitioner, whose ethical standards have always been of the highest degree. He has also, for the past five years, served as Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Vermont. In addition to his legal work, Mr. Ryan has at all times displayed a great interest in the game of baseball, and he is now the president of the Rutland Baseball Asso- ciation, members of the Northern League.


Mr. Ryan is a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church, an active supporter of the Democratic party, and an affiliate of Rutland Council, Knights of Columbus, of which he is Past Grand Knight, and Aerie No. 100I, Fraternal Order of Eagles, of which he is now president, and the Vermont State Bar Association. He also served from 1933 until September I, 1938, as adjutant of the 172d Infantry of the Vermont National Guard, and is now Judge Advocate of the State of Vermont.


He was married November 25, 1929, to Mary E. Corcoran of Rutland, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Rock) Corcoran. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan

LYMAN I. THAYER, M. D .- As superintendent of the Westmount Sanatorium since 1929, and member of the consulting staff of the Glens Falls Hospital since 1932, Dr. Lyman I. Thayer is recognized as one of the outstanding chest specialists and authorities on tuberculosis in Warren County.


Dr. Thayer was born in Newark, New Jersey, July 28, 1893, the son of Dr. Alfred I. and Sarah (Turney) Thayer. His father, who died on Decem- ber 21, 1928, was also a physician and established the Spa Sanatorium at Ballston Spa, New York, in 1902. Dr. Thayer, of this review, finished a general education at the Tennessee Military Institute, at Sweetwater, Tennes- see, in 1912, and then matriculated at Colby College, from which he was graduated in 1916. The following fall he enrolled in the College of Physi- cians and Surgeons of Columbia University at New York City and was awarded his Doctor of Medicine degree from this institution in 1920. Since that time he has taken postgraduate work at the Trudeau School of Tuber- culosis which he attended in 1938.


Dr. Thayer served his interneship at the Albany Hospital from 1920 to 192I and for three months was resident physician of the Tuberculosis Serv- ice here. He then joined the New York State Department of Health as supervisor of the tuberculosis sanatorium, also had charge of the clinic and dispensary facilities and eventually was promoted to the post of associate director of the Division of Tuberculosis, occupying this office until 1929 when he became superintendent of the Westmount Sanatorium. Dr. Thayer is a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians, a member and former vice-president of the Glens Falls Academy of Medicine, and belongs to the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Tuberculosis Phy- sicians, the National Tuberculosis Association, and the Warren County Med- ical Society. He is a director and former vice-president and president of the Glens Falls Kiwanis Club, worships at the Presbyterian Church and was formerly a member of the Medical Reserve Corps of the United States Army.
