The county seat cf Barbour county. with 1.800 population, is located on Ty- gart's Valley river and the Grafton & Belington division of the B & O R R, 24 miles from Grafton. 124 miles east of Wheeling, 17% miles north of Bel- ington, at which point the B & O con- nects with W Va C & P Ry for Cum- berland. 148 miles distant. The Wa- bash R R. which will pass directly through Philippi. is now graded with- in three miles of the town. It has 5 churches and a good public school. 2 national banks, flour and planing mills, coal mines, a wagon manufac- tory, a tannery, a good hotel, a marble and granite works, a brick and tile factory with a capacity of 20.000 per day: the Philippi Stogie Co is located here, having one of the most extensive cigar manufactories in the state; 3 weekly newspapers, the Democrat, the Plaindealer and the Republican. A new county court house is being built at an estimated cost of $125.000.
