It connects at Ravenswood with the R S & G division, which extends to Spencer, the county seat of Roane county, and at Mill Wood with the Ripley and Mill Creek Valley Road, running from Ripley Landing to Jack- son C H. It also connects both north and south with several great systems of railroads. Two magnificent steel bridges span the Little Kanawha river at Parkersburg, and the Ohio river is spanned at this point with one of the longest bridges in the world. The Little Kanawha river has 52 miles of slack water and is navigable at nearly all seasons of the year. It is now as- sured that the Government will short- ly take charge of the river and put in a new series of locks and dams. The Ohio river is also navigable to this city from all points, and by means of 90 miles of slackwater of the Muskin- gum river, which empties into the Ohio at Marietta. The prosperity of the building industry and its allied in- terests reflect significantly the city's growth and development. The homes of the working classes are pretty, cozy and comfortable: the residences of the wealthier citizens are spacious and ele- gant, and the business houses are sub- stantial and attractive. Real estate has never commended fancy prices, but is steadily increasing in value, en- abling the working classes to own their homes and thus materially en- hancing the welfare and prosperity of the city. The banking business is transacted by the following banks: The Citizens' National Bank. the Park- ersburg National Bank, First National. Central Banking & Security Co, Sec- ond National Bank. Farmers & Mo- chanics National Bank, Wood County Bank, Union Trust & Deposit Co, and Commercial Banking & Trust Co. But
few cities of its size have more ample banking facilities, and none have sounder banks than Parkersburg. Not- withstanding the phenomenal indus- trial advance, that of the educational interest has been equally great. The public schools are unsurpassed by those of any community in the coun- try. There are 15 commodious public school buildings now in use. The high school building (costing $93.000) surpasses in size and architectural beauty many institutions of like char- acter in the larger cities; in addition there is a female seminary, a convent and a business college. Parkersburg's postoffice and custom house building is the finest in the state. and the Cam- den Theater and the Auditorium would be a credit to any city. The city hall. recently completed, is by far the finest in the state. The city is supplied with gas and water works. lighted by elec- tricity, has telephone exchange, city parks, first-class hotels, and all con veniences of a modern metropolis. Neither are religious organizations neglected, there being 16 churches, representing the leading religious denominations. The State Journal and the Sentinel (daily and weekly). the Parkersburg News (every morn- ing), devoted to the state,
are newspapers of which any city might be proud. The most extensivo business interests of Parkersburg are those of the lumber industry. The poplar, walnut, oak, cherry and other woods with which West Virginia abounds are manufactured into all classes of furniture, sawed lumber. etc., and shipped to every known land. The other manufacturing interests comprise oil refineries. machine shops. furniture factories, foundries, flour mills, tanneries, steel plants. engine works. wire nail mill, wire works and numerous other industries.
