Population, 1,300. The judicial seat of Hampshire county, is one of the oldest towns in the state, having been settled about the year 1747. It was laid out by Lord Fairfax, and the orig- inal plot is still on record. It is the terminus of the South Branch R R division of the B & O R R. The town is situated on a bluff, about 250 feet above the south branch of the Poto- mac. Here is located the State In- stitution for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind. It is well supplied with stores, and has 2 newspapers, besides a pa- per published at the institution, and a small church paper. It has a good public school and a good preparatory school, known as the Potomac Semi- nary. Excellent grades of hardwood, including vast quantities of white oak and hickory, abound. Tanbark, mine props, ties and lumber constitute the principal shipments. Five churches of the following denominations are sustained: Methodist Episcopal, North and South, Presbyterian, Protestant Episcopal and African Methodist Episcopal. RONCEVERTE.
Is an important town of 1,800 in- habitants, situated on the C & O Ry and Greenbrier river, in Greenbrier county, 4 miles south of Lewisburg, the county seat. The C & O Ry has just completed a branch road 100 miles in length, which leaves this town and follows the Greenbrier river from Whitcomb 3 miles east, and traverses an undeveloped territory through the rich lumber forests and mineral fields of Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties and connects with the W Va & Pitts- burk division of the B & O R R, open- ing up a new and valuable section of the state to the advantages of rail- road facilities with Pittsburg and the trunk lines of the B & O R R and C & O Ry. It is a postal point of con- siderable importance. A fine white sulphur spring is situated 2 miles from town. Ronceverte is incorporated and has 9 churches, 2 public schools, 2 banks, an opera house, local and long distance telephones, 2 weekly news- papers, flour mill, electric light plant, saw mills, a large cold storage plant, furniture factory and canning house.
