ST. MARYS.

Population, 2.500. The county seat and largest town of Pleasants county, located on the Ohio river and B & O R R, 30 miles north of Parkersburg, and 64 south of Wheeling. It was first settled in 1849 and incorporated in 1872, but was reincorporated in 1880. It has five churches, a $20,000 new brick public school, two banks, four hotels, flour mill, tannery, two machine shops and two weekly news- papers, beside the many stores, etc., usually found in an oil town. St Marys is at the present time enjoying a prosperous and extensive business. New businesses are being established, and an extensive mercantile business is carried on. The development of oil in this locality is of no mean propor. tion, and this, with numerous other advantages, insures a constant growth in the city's welfare Among the new buildings recently completed is a fine opera house, at a cost of $12.000, and a new court house, estimated to cost not less than $60.000, is contemplated in the near future. Two new bank buildings have been erected, and a new hotel. Oil is king and every kind of business that depends on this commodity is to be found here. Tele- phone connection to Hebron, Rock Run. Schultz. Finch and Calcutta by local companies, and to the outside

SALEM.

Population, 2,000. A town on the B & O R R, in Harrison county, 14 miles west of Clarksburg, the county seat. It has 3 churches, good schools, 2 banks, a colloge, good hotels, one planing mill and oil well tool works and oil well supplies. The West Vir- ginia Industrial Home for Girls, re- cently established with a handsome new building, is charmingly located on its own grounds, and situated about three-quarters of a mile west of town. Owing to the great development of the oil wells through this section Salem' has made remarkable advancement during the last few years, and the value of property and business has been greatly advanced. Numerous oil well supply companies have branch houses here, which adds greatly to the business. Since the fire, which oc- curred on the night of December 14th, 1901, destroying the greater portion of the business section of the town, most of the down-town buildings have been re-erected of brick and stone. The new buildings of the banks are hand- some and commodious and cost about $25,000 each. Salem has the only lamp chimney factory in the state, which employes about 100 people and has a monthly payroll of about $5,000. The new postoffice, occupying handsome quarters, and fitted with all the latest mail-handling devices, has more than doubled its receipts since 1897. Exp, U S. Tel, W U. J J Flanigan post- niaster.
