The judicial seat of Wetzel county since 1846, when the county was formed out of Tyler county. It is on the. Ohio river and Baltimore & Ohio R R, and at the terminus of the W Va Short Line, 38 miles south of Wheeling. Was established in 1838, incorporated in 1848 and reincorpor- ated in 1871. The metropolis of Wet- zel county has enjoyed a healthy and permanent growth in the past four years and now has a population of over 3,000. Its growth has resulted partially from the general develop- ment of the state, but in the main is attributable to oil fields that have been developed within its limits. These fields are known as Elk Fork, Proctor, Piney, Wolf, Penn, Jackson- burg and Pine Grove, with extensions to them under different names. The city has undergone a transformation under these influences and the past two years has seen many fino dwell-

ings erected within the corporation, while several large and modern busi- ness houses have been built. During the coming year building will be quite extensive and many new business houses will be completed. The Short Line Railway, Clarksburg to New Mar- tinsville, is regarded as giving the city great advantages and making it the commercial center cf a vast area of West Virginia's coal fields. Sev- eral railways, tapping some of the richest veins of coal in the state, are projected to connect with the Short Line Railway. While the city is en- joying a permanent and continuous growth, there is no evidence of a "boom." Real estate. while command- ing a fair price. has not reached an exorbitant scale. Much territory for building is available and several addi- tions to the city have been laid out, from which can be selected lots suit- able for either business or dwelling houses. A handsome court house has been erected upon the site of the old one at a cost of $100,000. The city is well provided with a good sewerage system, an electric light plant and an electric car line to Sistersville is near- ly completed. The city offers excep- tional advantages to manufacturers to locate here. Gas is abundant and cheap; good sites for building and the best shipping facilities by rail and water. The buildings occupied by the banks are among the finest in the state. The present banking facilities of the town are contained in the Wet- zel County bank. the New Martins- ville bank and First National bank. The Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal. Christian, Catholic, Methodist Epis- copal South and Presbyterian relig- ious denominations are represented in

the city. Five papers are published the Evening Dispatch (a flourishing daily. edited by the New Martinsville Publishing Company), the Wetzel Re- publican and Wetzel Democrat and the News, weekly, and the Mountain State Gavel, a monthly organ of the Jr. O. U. A. M. The country lying back of the city affords good agricul- tural, grazing and fruit raising lands. Local and long distance telephone con- nections. Express, Adams.
