Surveys for these works were commenced Oct. 1858; ground broke June, 1854 and first pumping of water, Oct. 28, 1855. The engines and pumps were used in supplying water to the Garden Street Reservoir from the Connecticut river up to Jan. 2, 1867, at 2 P. M., at which time water from West Hartford was substituted.


Pumps were started Oct. 8, 1891, 2.80 P.M., and run till Dec. 8th; they were also run Dec. 22d to the 30th inst., to supply a large part of the city, owing to the failure in the supply of the reservoirs. Its hourly ca- pacity is 154,000 gallons for delivering at reservoir, which is at an elevation of 125 feet above the river, and 13 miles distant from it. The load upon the engine at low water, and with a full Reservoir, is 11,934 pounds.


The pier in the river, to protect the receiving pipe, is where at low water, there is 12 feet in depth, the water running into a well 140 feet from the river.


The ORIGINAL GARDEN STREET RESERVOIR, 97-175 Garden street, is connected by 6,879 feet of 16 inch iron pipe, with Pumps on Water st .; holds 8,600,000 gallons.

THE WEST HARTFORD RESERVOIR was completed and water furnished the city therefrom at 2 o'clock P. M., January 2d, 1867, at which time the pumps ceased working, and have been used since only occasionally.


The receipts from Water Rents collected for the year ending March 1, 1895, amounted to $200,662.86; from sale of pipe, etc., $4,881.99; cash on hand, March 1, 1895, $19,591.36; total receipts, $227,532.88. Disburse- ments as follows: Construction, $88,184.88; repairs, $11,715.61; current expenses, $31,617.51; interest on water bonds, $48,770.00; cash on hand, $52,294.88; total disbursements, $227,532.88.


Total consumption of water for the year ending March 1, 1869, when it was all measured at the pump- ing works, was 700,000,000 gallons. Under the direct distribution from the West Hartford reservoir during the 1876 fiscal year, was 1,808,500,000 gallons, equal to 4,954,795 gallons per day. During the drought of 1879 the average daily supply from Sept. 22, 1879, to Jan. 28, 1880, pumped from the river, for use in the eastern part of the city, was 8,298,815 gallons, which shows an average daily supply to the city of 6,000,000 gallons.


Reservoir No. 1 is five miles from City Hall, and at high water flows 82 acres. Its capacity of 84 feet in depth is 145,985,548 United States gallons. The alti-


tude of the reservoir at top water above low water of Connecticut River is 260 feet, and gives a head at the City Hall of 185 feet over the old works.


Reservoir No. 2 is 12 miles beyond Reservoir No. 1, covering a water surface of 49 acres with 41 feet depth and capacity of 288,694,375 gallons. Forty acres of land was purchased in 1890 for additional water shed.


Reservoir No. 8, is located about one mile north west- erly from Reservoir No. 1, and was completed October 80, 1875, with a capacity, when filled to depth of 36 feet, of 145,595,829 gallons, covering 25 42-100 acres at top water line. Total cost $59,117.78.


Reservoir No. 4, located in towns of New Britain and Farmington. It is 8} miles from the city by the south road. The reservoir overflowe 160 of the 188 acres. The land cost $9,764.90; construction, $84,124.86. Its capacity of 20 feet in depth is 601,858,592 gallons.


Reservoir No. 5 is on Mine Brook, about half a mile from No. 1, with a capacity of 94,182,000 gallons; constructed in 1884, at an expense of $18,549 and paid from receipts of water rents.


Reservoir No. 6 is located about 2 miles north of the first water shed, and covers about 109 acres and will hold over 800,000,000; it was completed Oct. 1, 1895, and cost $594,781.06.


Making a total supply of over 2,100,000,000 gallons in the six reservoirs.


Mountain Stream Canal has been thoroughly exca- vated, bringing a supply of water from three rivulets into Reservoir No. 2, constructed in 1888.


Brandy Brook Canal, 12 miles long, 16 feet deep, 12 feet wide at bottom, connecting Brandy Brook with Reservoir No. 4, constructed in 1888.


Three hundred and eighty-nine new service pipes were added last year, making a total of 7,771.


Total amount of main pipe now (July 1, 1896,) in use is ninety-five miles, of which there remains about seven miles of cement-lined sheet-iron mains in use, that are being replaced with cast-iron pipe, as fast as finances will permit.


621 Public hydrants and 464 water meters are in use. The total construction outlay since this water system has been introduced, has been $2,556,265.27; of this amount $1,591,802.85 has been paid.


From the commencement of these works in 1856 tc March, 1896, the amount received for water rents has been $3,108,196.66. Paid for repairs and current ex. penses, $1,017,048.56; paid interest, $1,757,928.10.

FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST IN HARTFORD. (CENTER CONGREGATIONAL. ) 227 MAIN ST. THE first organization of this church was at Cambridge, Mass., Oct. 11, 1633. It removed to Hartford in a body, with Rev. Thos. Hooker as Pastor and Rev. Sam'l Stone as Teacher, in June, 1686.

SECOND CHURCH OF CHRIST.


The present church edifice was erected in 1807. April 15, 1815, this society erected a brick conference room now standing rear of No. 38 Temple st., and used as such until their present conference room, 231 Main st. was made ready in 1832. Dec. 16, 1794, this church voted to hold religious meetings in the even- ing-the first record of evening religious meet- ings in this Society. In 1822 this church had the first organ in this town, and in 1885 an- other new one, which last was superseded by the most improved instrument, in Sept. 1888.


The size of present edifice is 114 feet in length by 79 in width. There are 150 slips on the lower floor, and 75 in the gallery, which will seat about 1200 persons. Spire is 185 feet in height. Services 10.45 A. M.
