Room 48, State Capitol, Hartford. There are 18 railroad corporations in the State, owning 1,719.41 miles of single track in this State.
Capital stock issued, $90,008,868.88, of which $25,- 877,800.00 is held in Connecticut by 4,745 stockholders. The funded and floating debt is reported at $57,849,- 240.17.
Total gross earnings, $35,206,110.71, of which $15,- 480,884.98 was from passengers, and $16,402.141.25 from freight. Gross earnings per mile of road operated $15,- 017.24; net earnings per same, $4,740.79. Operating
expenses, $24,091,893.56. Gross earnings per mile run $1.74146. The average receipts per passenger per mile $0.01802. Amount paid for interest, $970,270.00. Dividends paid, $4,748,256.00.
Number of passengers carried, 58,198,332; tons of freight carried, 14,469,612. Total miles run were 25,- 584,502, of which 12,894,236 were by passenger trains, and 7,519,521 by freight trains.
There are 410 stations in the state, with an average distance of 3.29 miles between each. Number of high- way grade crossings in the state, 1,051. The total number of locomotives is 986; number of cars, 20,261. The number of employees, including officers, in opera- ting the roads is 26,328.
During the past year, 23 passengers were injured, 3 of these fatally; of employees 271 were injured, 30 fatally: trespassers, 150, of which 128 were fatal.
SAVINGS BANKS IN CONNECTICUT.
As reported Oct. 1, 1895, by the Bank Commission- ers to the Legislature of Connecticut, there were 90 Savings Banks, holding $148,159,128.05 of deposits, and with total assets of $152,528,576.03, being an increase over last year in deposits of $6,507,781. Whole num- ber of depositors are 846,758, a net increase of 9,504 over 1894. Loans on real estate, $57,657,685.50. Loans on stock and bonds, $11,829,143.

Incorporated 1666, originally comprised entire Coun- ty of Tolland, most of Middlesex and Windham Coun- ties, and part of Litchfield and New London Counties. Hartford County Court house building, corner of Trumbull and Allyn streets, completed, Jan. 5, 1885, is in general design fire proof, of the modern French school; is 80 feet on Trumbull street and 141 feet on Allyn street, three stories, with a basement. The ma- terial is Philadelphia pressed brick, with Portland stone trimmings. The main entrance is at 85 Trum- bull st., and another corridor entrance at 127 Allyn st.

COUNTY JAIL.
THE FIRST JAIL in Hartford was erected in rear of a building on the northwest corner of State and Market streets. In 1798 the first Hartford County Jail was erected on the southwest corner of Pearl and Trumbull streets, and removed June, 1887, from thence to 107 Pearl street, from thence to 42 Seyms street, July 11, 1874, ground for which building was broken, April 17, 1878. This last County Jail with land and interest on debt therefor to April 24th, 1878, cost $240,488.98.
There are 200 cells for the accommodation of 225 pris- oners. The number of commitments for the year end- ing June 80, 1895 was 2,082-remaining in Jail, 222; of whom 1,812 were males and 178 females; 784 natives of Conn .; other states, 489; foreigners, 809: habitually intemperate, 19; moderate drinkers, 2,009; strictly temperate, 4; burglary, 55; drunkenness, 955; breach of the peace, 169; assault, 161; adultery, 2; assault with intent to kill, 8. Average daily, 281.
