Entered according to Act of Congress, A. D., 1896, by The Hartford Printing Company, in office of Librarian of Congress, Washington, D. C.
The figures 1. 2. 8. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10 on the right of the names of each street indicate the wards in sokich the same are located,-the ward boundaries generally run in the center of streets .- Ses Table of Contents.
The letter E indicates the streets where 586} ELECTRIC LIGHTS are in use.
The letter a indicates that GAB PIPES are laid in such streets. There are about 70 miles of gas pipes.
The letter M indicates that said street is either wholly or partly MACADAMIZED, CURBED, and with STONE GUTTERS.
The letter & indicates that official numbering for FRONT DOORS to houses in these streets, can be found in a book in the ofice of the City Surveyor. In April, 1856, all the buildings then in this City were re-numbered.
The letter s indicates that said street is SKEWERED, in whole or in part. There are 824 streets. The letter w indicates that CITY WATER PIPES are laid in such streets, in whole or in part.
This Guide indicates at a glance the proximate locality of any required number on any street; for example, if you desire to know about where No. 800 Asylum street is located, this guide shows you that, being an even number, it will be found on the north side, and about mid-way between Sumner and Huntington streets.
The streets running north and south are numbered from the south excepting Wethersfield, Maple and Franklin avenues Hopkins and Babcock sts., those running east and west are numbered from Main st., or from end of street pointing thereto, excepting North st., Columbia st. and Park Terrace. Odd numbers on SOUTH and WEST sides, uniformly. The names of all streets running north and south ( except Main, Broad and Laurel ), change at Park river, and all east and west at crossing Main street. There were 1,330 steel signs, with raised galvanized iron letters, erected on the corners of intersecting streets in April, 1896.
