GEER'S HARTFORD CITY DIRECTORY.

33

ABBREVIATIONS AND EXPLANATIONS.

THERE are many signs in this city indicating a corporation or company, where no legal organization, as such, can be found on records. Any of our patrons who desire, can find a list of the legally organized compa- nies in this city on pages 868-528; 722-729, with their respective list of officers, etc.

The business location of individuals engaged in business for themselves, is first mentioned in connection with their names, and then their place of residence; persons not thus engaged, but employed by others, are mentioned first as AT THE No. and street or AT THE company where employed, and then their place of residence. Where the entrance from the street number is to more than one firm or company, we generally mention the name of the firm or company in whose employ the person may be, instead of the number and street.

. Signifies that only one partner of the firm name could be ascertained.

Where female names are mentioned without a prefix of Mrs. such are understood to be a Miss.

When two numbers are given in connection with one name, and only one street mentioned, the number first given is the place of business, and the second the residence, and both in the same street.

The letter h. signifies house; b. boards; 1. lodges or rooms at; st. street; av. avenue; r. rear; a. upper nement; pl. place; c. for corner; ct. court; rd. road; t. for town; v. for village; n. for near; rm. for room; etc. We have omitted at the end of each line, av. pl. and ct. except in cases where streets and avenues have the me name. Therefore where the residences of individuals are put down as at New Britain, Farmington, Maple, c., the word avenue is understood to follow. Abbreviations of names of streets, etc., are made as follows :--

PUBLIC BATHING HOUSE.

The first free public bathing house was opened July 20, 1872; the second to replace this house, which through faulty construction sank, was built and opened for use July 22, 1884. The present house, to replace the 1884 structure which floated off to the sound in this spring freshet, was designed and its construction supervised by Captain John K. Williams, Alderman from the 5th Ward, and Chairman of the "Bathing House Committee."' It was built by S. Gildersleeve & Sons, shipbuilders, Portland, Conn., in the most sub- stantial manner and upon entirely different principle from the others. It is supported or floated by three pontoons or floats on a side, each 20 feet long, 7 wide and 4 in depth; and these are surrounded by 12x12 timbers, and in every way protected from any possible injury even if the house sank. These floats are detach- able at any time and are independent from the others for any repairs by simply opening the sea valve in the bottom and partially filling with water so as to sink the pontoon away from the load. This house contains 36 dressing-rooms and 50 hooks, together with benches for the clothes of smaller children not using the rooms; an office with closets for valuables; one tank, 50 feet by 5 feet, with water depth of 24 for young children, and one tank 56 by 20 feet, with water depth of 4 feet. Hours for men and boys, 7 to 10 A. M .; 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 P. M .; Sundays, 6 to 10 A. M .: For women and girls, 10.80 A. M. to 12.80 P. M .; 4.20 to 6.80 P. M .; week days only. Size of structure, 60x40 feet. Cost, $3,500. Opened July 4, 1896. Committee for 1896-7: Alder- man John K. Williams, chairman; Councilman Hen- ry F. Hart, August Preissner.
