PREFACE

This publication of Illinois state census schedules for 1820 is a companion work to the 1810 federal and 1818 territorial censuses published in another volume of the Illinois Historical Collections. The introduction to the earlier returns presents the history of census taking in Illinois and gives tables and a map showing the population by counties in 1818 and 1820. This book contains not only the 1820 state census schedules but also notes comparing all discrepancies be- tween the names as written in the 1818 territorial, the 1820 state, and the 1820 federal censuses. While in most instances these repre- sent merely minor variations in spelling, there are enough marked dis- crepancies to indicate that all three sets of returns are necessary to compile a correct list of the pioneers of each county. Symbols have been used in both volumes to indicate names appearing in the other two censuses. In making this comparison families were not assumed to be identical unless they appeared as residing in approximately the same vicinities. Similarity of names alone was not considered suffi- cient unless they were quite distinctive or unless other evidence cor- roborated the hypothesis. Names appearing in the federal but not in the state census of 1820 are given in the notes. No attempt has been made to compare the number of members ascribed to each family, as the classifications used in the federal census are more detailed than those of the state census, and since it is to be hoped that the 1820 fed- eral census will also be printed before many years.

The editor wishes to thank those who have given so freely of their time, criticisms and the resources of their departments. She wishes to give especial thanks to Professor Theodore C. Pease, the editor-in- chief of this series, and to his staff, Miss Ernestine Jenison, Miss Mildred Eversole and Miss Louese Ramser, without whose excep- tional and painstaking accuracy many errors would have slipped into this volume. The cooperation of the assistants, past and present, in the State Archives Division have made this work possible. The suc- cessive chief clerks, Mrs. Grace B. Hanson and Miss Jean Carroll, by relieving the editor of many office details have given the opportu- nity for the concentration necessary ; and the typists, especially Mrs. Edith D. Strain and Mrs. Helen J. Hanson, contributed much by their cheerful patience in an exacting task. Both Miss Georgia L. Osborne and her successor, Mr. Paul M. Angle, of the Illinois State Historical Library, have placed their personal knowledge and the resources of their library at her disposal in the freest possible manner.

CENSUS OF 1820

ALEXANDER COUNTY (Continued)

The federal and state censuses for Alexander County were both taken by John F. Smyth, who certified the state census on November 21 and the federal census on December 1 of 1820. The arrangement of names differs enough to prove that one census was not a copy of the other. Seven names appearing in the state census have been omitted from the federal census, two of which are probably repetitions. There are also minor variations in spelling, and in one case, Joshua Levingston (state census No. 80), the first name is changed to Elisha in the federal census. The county of Alexander was not organized until 1819, so its population statistics for 1818 are included in the census for Union County, taken by David and Jeremiah Brown. Dis- crepancies in the three enumerations are as follows:

1 Millikin, Alexander
