ILLINOIS HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS
EDWARDS COUNTY (Continued)
Although Edwards County was created in 1815, there are no extant state census returns for that county prior to 1835. In 1818 Edwards County comprised all or parts of the present Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, Wabash, Lawrence, Richland, Clay, and Marion counties. In 1819 Jefferson and Wayne had been created in the western two-thirds of that region, and are represented in the state census of 1820. For Edwards County itself there is only the summary given here. The federal census of 1820 lists 571 names of heads of families, and these are listed here for the sake of completeness in the list of names of Illinois pioneers of that date. Since this is a compilation of state and not of federal census returns the accompanying statistics await publication in United States Bureau of the Census compilations.
