The larger population given for 1818 is partly accounted for by the fact that many families are apparently listed more than once in that census, indicating that they were still moving about and not yet located. The discrepancies between the two 1820 censuses would be somewhat reduced also if it could be shown that families with the same surname were always identical. Frequently brothers or several unrelated families residing together more or less temporarily would give in different names as head of the family. Where the size and location of the family seems to correspond definitely this is indicated in the notes, but in many cases such a relationship, though probably existing, cannot be established from such a comparison.

These discrepancies in the tables are due largely to the fact that the population of Gallatin County was more mobile than that of any other county. Shawneetown, its county seat, was the port of entry through which practically all immigrants came into the state and from which the roads led to all the other counties. Families sometimes settled in the county per- manently, but more often stayed a short time and then settled elsewhere. Undoubtedly many transients were listed by the census takers as residents.

The following names appear in the federal census but not in the 1820 state census.
