CENSUS OF 1820
MADISON COUNTY (Continued)
Madison County was the largest county of Illinois in 1820, comprising all the territory north of St. Clair County and west of Bond, with the most densely populated part of the state in the present county of Madison, and the rest of its population widely scattered in small settlements reaching as far north as the present Springfield. It is hardly surprising then, to find that the state census taken by Young Wood and the federal census taken by Thomas Reynolds differ considerably. The state census reports a total of 1,414 families with a total population of 8,522, while the federal census reports 2,021 families with a total population of 13,550. However, the federal census figures are undoubtedly padded, three pages with a total of 76 names being repeated with minor variations as to spelling and the population data; many other names appear two or three times and some of these are un- doubtedly repetitions; furthermore, where names correspond in the two schedules, the federal census usually shows larger families than the state (6.7 per family in federal-6.03 per family in state). It is probably safe to deduct at least 100 families and 500 persons from the federal census figures for repetitions alone. However, the federal enumerator did visit many localities which were missed by the state enumerator. Among the townships where a large percentage of the population was missed by Wood are: Goshen, Bounty Land, Springfield, Six Mile Prairie, Edwardsville, Ridge Prairie, Greenfield, and Fork Prairie. In other words, he confined himself to the more densely populated regions. Wood, on the other hand, lists 254 names which have not been identified with names in the federal census. Of these, forty appear in the 1818 census. Forty-four names from the 1818 census are found only in the federal census. Except for a small group of names beginning with No. 1354, however, these names are interlarded between those found in both enumerations, indicating that he probably did not visit any localities not visited by Reynolds. Furthermore, Reynolds was evidently more familiar with the names than Wood, who spelled phonetically, and in places where both men visited neighborhoods in somewhat the same order it is nearly always possible to make the names, even though spelled differently or even at first thought different names, coincide. These differences are pointed out in the notes. With these discrepancies it is difficult to estimate the actual population of Madison County for 1820, but it seems likely that it was not over 1,900 families with a total population of about 11,000 to 11,500.
Discrepancies are as follows:
