CENSUS OF 1820
JACKSON COUNTY (Continued)
The 1818 census was taken by Conrad Will. It is undated. The state census for 1820 was taken by Matthew Duncan sometime between August 1 and December 1. The federal census for 1820 was taken by Hugh Steel and certified November 29. Two hundred fifty-three . families are given in the federal census and 281 families in the state census of 1820. Twenty- one families listed in the federal census are not listed in the state census; five of these families, however, appear in the 1818 census. Forty-nine families listed in the state census are not listed in the federal census; and of these, three families are in the 1818 census. The total discrepancy between the federal and state census is 70 families, 62 families appearing in one census only. Many of those listed in the state census, especially in the latter pages, were single men, presumably transients looking for a permanent location before bringing their families.
The following names are found in the federal census but not the state census:

ILLINOIS HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS
JEFFERSON COUNTY (Continued)
Jefferson County was a part of Edwards and White counties until 1819. As there are no extant census returns for Edwards County in 1818 no comparison can be made with the 1820 schedules for that county. However, eighteen names found in the 1820 state census for Jefferson County are found in the White County census for 1818. The federal census for Jefferson County was taken by Lewis Watkins and certified November 13, 1820. The state census taken by Oliver Morris is dated August 1, 1820, this date probably being the date on which the enumeration was begun. The state census lists 144 families and the federal census 129 families. Twenty-six families appearing in the state census are omitted from the federal census and 11 families in the federal census are omitted from the state census.
