(NOTE .- Augustus F. Simmons was a frank, ingenuous and sincere youth, beloved by all his schoolmates,-one of whom was the writer of these lines. George W. Hosmer, our teacher, was much moved by the death of so promising a youth ; and at Mr. Hosmer's suggestion many if not all the members of the school attended the funeral. Benjamin Drew was one of the eight bearers. White bands of cloth were secured about the casket containing the remains of our friend and schoolmate, and grasping these bands, we carried the precious burden from the house at the head of Water street to its final resting place. Those who knew young Simmons have never ceased to regret his early exit.)
