BURIAL HILL :
No. 2161.
[This No. takes the place of No. 376, q. v. 2161 is a fine, beautiful block of slate, firm and compact. It is six inches in thickness, and about four feet high. This stone has been substituted for the former one in order to correct what Bradford's History of Plymouth Colony shows to have been an error. On the new stone a vessel under sail takes the place of the old-time symbol ; and on the upper corners are sculptured representations of scallop shells.]
Here ended the Pilgrimage of JOHN HOWLAND who died February 23, 1672-3, aged above 80 years He married Elizabeth daughter of JOHN TILLEY who came with him in the Mayflower Dec. 1620. From them are descended a numerous posterity.
"He was a godly man and an ancient professor in the wayes of Christ. He was one of the first comers into this land and was the last man that was left of those that came over in the Shipp called the Mayflower that lived in Plymouth."
Plymouth Records.
No. 2162.
[Erected to preserve the original stone No. 295 (Nathaniel Good- win). No. 2162 is a tall handsome block of granite, from the face of which was scooped a cavity of right depth and dimensions to receive and protect No. 295,-which, fitted to and secured within said cavity, will, it is hoped, successfully resist the assaults of time and the ele- ments for centuries to come.]
[At about a mile from the Town-house, on South street, was form- erly a "pest-house," in which small-pox patients were treated. Near the site of the pest-house are several graves; two are marked by headstones,-only one however, has an inscription; this it seems to the author advisable to insert, although from the circumstances of the case the interment of Mrs. Mayhew was remote from Burial Hill :]
MARY MAYHEW wife of THOMAS MAYHEW, Esqr. who Decd Sept. 3d 1776 Aged 54 years.
[NOTE. If any errors or omissions are discovered in this work, the author would be glad to be informed thereof, that the proper corrections and insertions may be made in a third edition. But he requests his correspondents not to delay ; for, being in his 85th year, he is perfectly aware that erelong the crossbones and hour-glass may decorate his own headstone. Address BENJAMIN DREW, 48 Summer street, Plymouth, Mass.]
