What though this sad this gloomy hill contains Of relatives and friends the loved remains Yet in our breasts let cheerful hopes arise Again to meet in "mansions" of the skies.

[NOTE (by the author). The aboue epitaph was written by Mr. Benjamin Drew (b. 1767) a son of the decedent. The same Mr. Drew was once requested to write an epitaph on Mr. Barnabas Holmes (No. 680) his brother-in-law, who attained the ripe age of 81 years. Mr. Drew wrote the following:

By temperance taught, a few, advancing slow, To distant fate by easy journeys go. Calmly they lie then down like evening sheep,- On their own woolly fleeces softly sleep.

-but objection arose to these lines on the ground that Mr. Holmes had, at some time in his life, been a mutton-dealer! Accordingly Mr. Drew threw them aside, and penned the epitaph now on the monu- ment No. 680.]

Here lyes ye body of Mr Thomas Clark aged 98 years departed this life March ye 24th 1697.

(The footstone bears the symbol, and the words:)

Mr. Thomas Clark 1697.

[It was in 1889 that I copied the inscriptions on Burial Hill. Since then I have inserted a few from such new monuments as came under my observation. Among these is the following, copied from a metal- lic plate secured to a huge boulder recently placed. on the grave of Thomas Clark. On said plate this name is spelled "Clarke," which forbids us to suppose that the spelling reform, of omitting silent let- ters, caused Mr. Clark's de (s) cendants to leave out the letter S in two words of the inscription.]

(All in capital letters on the plate.)
