In This sacred spot Are deposited the remains of Capt Abraham Hammatt who died of a malignant Fever Octo- ber 12th 1797 Ætatis 47 And of his daughter Sophia who on the fst December following Fell a victim to the same Disease Atatis 13.


Hers was the mildness of the rising Morn And his the radiance of the risen day.

[Tall and wide, blue slate. Fair condition, save a cleft from the ground upward. When Bradford's manuscript history of Plymouth Plantation was discovered in England in the year 1855, the statement on this stone that Elizabeth Howland "was the dau tr of Gov. Car- ver" was shown to be erroneous. She was the daughter of John Tilley, one of the Mayflower Company. The correction should be made, lest the thought "Here lies the body" be exchanged for "Here lies the stone."


Here ended the Pilgrimage of JOHN HOWLAND and ELIZABETH his wife. She was the dau.tr of Gov. Carver. They arrived in the Mayflower, Dec. 1620. They had 4 Sons and 6 dau.trs from whom are descended a numerous posterity. "1672 Feb.y 23. John Howland of Plymouth deceased he lived to the age of 80 yr.s. He was the last man that was left of those that came over in the ship called the Mayflower that lived in Plymouth."

[Blue slate. Broken at top. Part of wing of the cherub symbol remains. The surface in which is the inscription, does not appear to be at all abraded. The grave is a very short one; evidently that of a young child. I think that neither the name of the child, nor the word "son" or "daughter" was ever engraved on the stone; and there is an unoccupied space after the word "Aged" The footstone has at the right the letter "P." There is no initial for a Christian name.]

[A high, broad stone, of very dark purple slate, about one-third of the face, on the right, split off and gone. At top, a portion of the symbol remains. The engraving, as on all the most ancient stones, is in capital letters. This stone is remarkable as being one of the six old monuments bearing dates in the 17th century:]

[A copy of the whole inscription, as originally cut on the stone No. 430, has been kindly furnished the author by EDGAR F. RAYMOND, Esq., who often saw the monument when it was in fair condition. It is as follows:]


Here lyes interred ten children viz three sons of Revd Mr John Cotton who died in the work of the gospel min- istry at Charlestown in South Carolina Sept 18th 1699 where he had great success and seven sons of Josiah Cot- ton Esq who deceas'd in their infancy
