Wright, daughter of Ebenezer and Hannah Wright, 1744. He was captain of one of the Westford companies that pursued the British red coats in their retreat from Concord Bridge, and received a wound which caused his death, July 4, 1775. (2) Sarah, b. 1733; m. Jonathan Johnson, of Hollis, N. H., 1754.

BURN or BOURNE. The only person, bearing this name, was James, who lived on the place lately occupied by Samuel N. Burbeck. A pasture near Rattlesnake Hill is still called the "Burn's Pasture." He was a potter by trade. (See p. 242.)

BURGE. This family came from Weymouth to Chelmsford. John, of Chelmsford, m. Trial Thayer, of Braintree, about 1682, and had ten children, whose births are recorded on Chelmsford books. Of these, Josiah, b. 1696, lived on the farm now occupied by Daniel W. Sherman. He owned a large tract of two or three hundred acres, which abutted on Main Street, and ran north-west over Stony Brook. It has been vari- ously subdivided, but included "the Crancum Pasture," and the "Dug- hill Lot." The farm of Rev. W. Hall was taken from the upper end. Samuel, cousin of Josiah, owned the land in the vicinity of Burge's Pond. Very little is known of him. Probably he had no family, and was not a permanent citizen.

Joseph Pollard, 1767; lived in New Ipswich. (8) Sarah, b. 1741; d. 1753. (9) Elizabeth, b. 1743. (10) John, b. 1747; d. 1750. There seems to have been a second Josiah, whose birth was not recorded; for Josiah Burge, Jr., of Townsend, m. Priscilla Barnes, of Westford, in 1781. BUTTERFIELD. Two persons of this name, Nathaniel and Benjamin, came from Woburn and settled in Chelmsford. There were many families, and it is hard to trace those that became residents here back to the original stock.

CARVER. 1. Robert, said to be brother of Gov. John Carver, was born in England, 1594; came to Marshfield, 1638; d. there 1680, aged 86. His son, John, b. 1637, m. Melicent Ford, of Marshfield. He died 1679, aged 42, leaving children: William, John, Robert, Eleazer, David, . Elizabeth, Mercy and Anna. David d. in 1727, in Canterbury, Conn. By his second wife, Sarah Butterfield, of Chelmsford, he had a son, Benja- min, born in Canterbury, 1722, Dec. 10. His mother, after his father's death, returned to her native Chelmsford. He passed his life in West- ford, where he owned a valuable farm, near the Centre, being the land about the house of Nathan P. Prescott, 1882. (See Symmes' Memorial p. 104.) CHAMBERLIN. 1. Henry. The ancestor of this family in New England was probably Henry of Hingham. Thomas, Edmund and Samuel came from Woburn to Chelmsford, and were among the first settlers. The first to be noticed here was Lieut. Samuel, of whom a sketch has already been given. CHANDLER. Two persons of this name settled in Westford, William and Ephraim, who were cousins, and lineal descendants of William of Roxbury. They were both born in Andover, and came to. this town before the date of its incorporation.
1. William was the son of William and Eleanor (Phelps), grand- son of Thomas, and great-grandson of the first William, being of the fourth generation. He m. GENEALOGY.
9. Ephraim. He was born in Andover, 1696, and was the son of Thomas and Mary (Peters) Chandler. Like his cousin, William, he was a great-grandson of William and Annis, of Roxbury. In 1720, Samuel Corey, of Littleton, sells land to Ephraim Chandler, of Andover, tanner, 40 acres lying in Chelmsford. In 1721, Ephraim Chandler, of Chelmsford, tanner, sells to Benjamin Chamberlin, 40 acres. There is some ground for the supposition that this land was on Frances Hill, and perhaps on, or near the spot on which a tannery was afterward built, near Chamberlin's Corner.
