KEYES. This, according to the best information now in hand, is the oldest family in the order of actual settlement. As early as 1664, Solomon Keyes was in possession of land on Frances Hill. He came from Newbury where he married Frances Grant in 1653. There was a Joseph, probably his brother. The Westford families are descended from Solo- mon, whose son Solomon was born, as it seems reasonable to suppose within the limits of this town in 1665. This second Solomon had a son Solomon, born in 1701, who was wounded in the battle of Lovewell's Pond. He, the third Solomon, married and had eight children, two of whom, Solomon and David, were born here. (See pp. 52, 53.)

KIDDER. 1. The first of this name who lived in this town was Thomas,* son of John and Lydia (Parker), b. 1690, in Chelmsford. John was son of James, and came from Billerica about 1685. Thomas m. * He lived in the south part, beyond Parkerville, and near Nonesuch Hill. He is said to have been a man of considerable wealth, and his house was an unusually fine one for the times, having much architectural symmetry with some adornments. His sons were enterprising men, especially Col. Reuben who bore so conspicuous a part in the settlement of New Ipswich. (See p. 158 ante.) Owing to the defective record, it is difficult to trace the remaining families.

LEIGHTON. This family came to New England in 1650. They were descended from Rev. Alexander Leighton, D. D., the father of Archbishop Leighton. William, one of the ancestors, received the honor of Knighthood; and the sword with which he was knighted was in the possession of Gen. Samuel Leighton, of Alfred, Me., in 1850. John, Wil- liam and Samuel, who were brothers, came from England to Ipswich, Mass., in the autumn of 1650. John, the oldest, settled in Ipswich; William in Kittery, Me., and Samuel went to Virginia. John had two children, Jolin and Martha, but Martha d. young. John, the son of John, had a son who was born in 1689. He was sea captain. He m., 1st, Sarah Perkins, and 2nd, Hannah Treadwell. The wife Hannah had six sons, viz: John, Thomas, William, Samuel, Daniel and Francis. He had also three daughters. Of the sons, John, Thomas and William were lost at sea. Capt. John, the father, becoming weary of sea-faring life, removed to Littleton, taking with him his youngest son, Francis, b. 1734, and his daughters Hannah, Martha and Sarah. The date of his removal was 1748. He was a member of Rev. Mr. Rogers' church. He died at the age of 84. His daughter Hannah m. Stone, of Groton; Mar- tha m. - - Lawrence, of Littleton, and Sarah m. Hunt, of Lit- tleton. Elizabeth, a granddaughter of Capt. John, came to Littleton and m. John Tuttle.

MINOT. The ancestor of this family in this country, was George of Dorchester, who was son of Thomas Minot, of Saffron-Walden, Essex, England. Jonathan, of the fourth generation from George, was of Con- cord, where he m. Elizabeth Stratton, and is said to have lived and died in Westford.
1. Samuel, the oldest son of Jonathan, was a resident here. He m. Elizabeth - Children: (1) Benjamin, b. 1744. (2) Sarah, b. 1745. (3) Samuel, b. 1748. After the birth of his third child, he went to Westmore- land, N. H. He was one of the grantees of that town in 1752. He did not, however, make a permanent settlement there, but removed to Put- ney, Vt., where he was a deacon in the church, and where he died.
2. Jonathan, son of Jonathan, and brother of Samuel, m. Esther Procter, daughter of Joseph and Agnes, b. 1725. The date of their pub- lishment on Chelmsford records is 1745. They lived in Parkerville, near Nonesuch Meadow. Children: (1) John Marston, b. 1746; grad. at Har- vard, 1767. He settled in Castine, Me., where he was deputy sheriff. (2) Esther, b. 1747; d. unmarried, 1821. (3) Jonathan, b. 1749, a soldier; m. Hannah Eastman, Hollis, and rem. to Westminster, Mass., where he

(8) Otis, b. 1803; m. Elizabeth Bartlett, Bos- ton; res. in Malden. (9) Mary Ann, b. 1807; d. 1809. Jesse and Almira had one child, Edward Jesse, b. 1833, before their removal.
3. Isaac, m. Mary Ann Hildreth, daughter of Jeremiah, 1844. Children: (1) Isaac Warren, b. 1845. (2) Mary Ann, b. 1847. (3) Alma, b. 1849; m. Albert P. Richardson, 1874.
4. John, brother of Jonathan 1, m. Rachel -. Child: Rachel, b. 1754. This is the only birth recorded here.

2. Stephen, m. Rebecca Hilton, of Lunenburg, 1798. Children: (1) Stephen Norman, b. 1800. (2) Samuel Hilton, 3, b. 1802. Stephen, the father, d. 1826. Stephen Norman, d. in California. He m. Nancy Hil- ton (?) who d. 1826. They had one son, Charles, d. 1826, aged 32 days.
