3. Samuel was a soldier of the Revolution; he m., 1767, Mar- garet Parrot. The town supported his family while he was in the army; after his return went to Weare, N. H., where he owned land. He returned, and becoming a pauper, the land in Weare was sold for the benefit of the town. His wife seems to have had a title to land in Gil- manton, N. H., which was also sold. The names of his children were Mary and Margaret (or Peggy.)
COMINGS, Cumings, Cummings. These are variations in the mode of spelling the same name. There is presumptive evidence that the family came from Topsfield or Boxford, and were related to the Cummings family, of Dunstable.
1. John Comings was a member of the church in Chelmsford, and a deacon of the same. Also, an original member of the church here and the first deacon. He was moderator of the first town meeting, and was chosen one of the selectmen; also, town clerk in 1736. His farm included the land around Westford Station on both sides of the brook. and is now occupied in part by Sarah Cummings and George F. Dupee.

FLETCHER. The ancestor of this family was Robert, who came from England and settled in Concord, 1630. William, his son, was born in England, 1622, and was among the first settlers of Chelmsford, 1653. Paul, the son of William, lived in Westford, near Boutwell's meadow. He m. Deliverance Stevens, 1705; was deacon of the church; d. 1736. Joshua, grandson of William, settled in Westford on the farm now oc- cupied by Robert J. Taylor. He had sons, Joshua, Gershom, Ephraim and Zechariah. Joshua d. 1727; Gershom m. Lydia Townsend and lived for a time in Groton. Ephraim and Zechariah enlisted in the war against the Indians and never returned. (For further information of the line of Joshua, see the Fletcher Genealogy). Jonathan, grandson of William, m. Jane Chamberlin, and settled near Thomas Horan's. Jonas, another grandson of William, set- tled near the present village of Graniteville. Samuel, the son of Robert, m. Margaret Hailston, and settled in that part of Chelmsford, which is now Westford. His grandson William (son of William), settled in West- ford on the farm now owned by Henry A. Hildreth. Samuel, the grand- son of Samuel and also the son of William, settled in Westford on the farm of Calvin Howard. This family is very numerous and it has always been so. It is not convenient for the purposes of this registry to arrange the families in the order of their pedigree, nor is there space to give them all in detail. It is thought expedient to follow the order of the record, and indicate the lineal descent as far as practicable. The records begin with:
