HALL. Rev. Willard. 1. His birth and parentage have already been given. His marriage to Miss Abigail Cotton, took place some time in 1729, the precise date not certain. She was probably descended from William Cotton, of Portsmouth, N. H., who came from England at some time prior to 1657, and who died in 1678. There is some evidence to show that she was his granddaughter, but the relationship cannot be posi- tively affirmed. If such was the fact, she must have been the daughter of John and Sarah Cotton, of Portsmouth. She is said to have been "a woman aristocratic in her feelings, and somewhat severe with her do- mestics." Children: (1) Willard, b. 1730, in Portsmouth, N. H .; m. 5. Thomas, m. Rebecca Smith. (?) Child: Thomas Smith, b. 1808. HILDRETH. The ancestor of this family was Richard, from whom all bearing the name in this country have descended. The first notice of him is his admission as a freeman of the colony of Massa- chusetts Bay, May 10, 1643, when he was thirty-five years old. There was a Richard of Cambridge, whose wife, Sarah, died in 1644; and this was probably the Richard who settled in Woburn, and married Elizabeth. His name appears among several inhabitants of Woburn, as one of the petitioners to the General Court for a new township, which was granted and called Chelmsford. On the supposition that Richard of Cambridge and Richard of Woburn and Chelmsford, are identical, there can be little doubt that James who was an early settler of Chelmsford, was the son of Richard and Sarah, and was born in Cambridge. The homesteads of Richard and James in Chelmsford, were south of the centre village and near South Chelmsford .* From Chelmsford they or their children came to Westford and early secured a large tract of land on the eastern border. (See p.)

(8) Jacob, b. 1709. 19) David, b. 1711. (10) Josiah. (?) This is perhaps the Ephraim who moved to Dracut about 1710, but who seems to have returned, at least, to reside awhile. Ephraim Hildreth, of Chelmsford, was one of the grantees of Concord, N. H.

2. Ebenezer, lived in the south part in or near "Texas." He m. Saralı Children: (1) Sarah, b. 1720. (2) Ebenezer, b. 1721. (3) Han- nah, b. 1729. (4) Mary, b. 1733.

There is scarcely any reason to doubt the identity of the parties. This Oliver was probably son of James and Dorothy. An Oliver m. Mary Wright, 1773. His parentage is also unknown. (Oliver of Townsend had no Oliver.) He owned the land on which Nathan S. Hamblin's house stands, and sold a small strip to the Proprietors of the Academy. Children : (1) Sarah, b. 1773. (2) Seth, b. 1775. (3) Polly, b. 1777. (4) Oliver, b. 1780; d. 1780. (5) Oliver, b. 1781. (6) Luke, b. 1783. (7) Betsey, b. 1786. (8) Lucy, b. 1788. (9) Dolly, b. 1791. (10) Amos, b. 1793. (11) Nancy, b. 1795. The names given to the children are in part similar to those found in the families of James and Dorothy, and of Zechariah, and this strengthens the supposition that he was connected with them. But it is possible that he was son of Eph- raim and Mary.
