of the original members of the first church; was active in all public af- fairs, and was evidently a man of character and influence. He was a farmer and innholder, and owned a large tract of land on the eastern slope of the hill on which the Central Village now stands, reaching up to the Common, and including the Osgood farm, together with the farms of the Spalding Brothers, of the Ira Leland heirs, and of Albert P. Rich- ardson. It was the best land near the centre, and is now occupied by several houses, and by large orchards. His dwelling stood nearly op- posite Mrs. Leland's, where a cellar-hole yet remains. He was also largely concerned in the settlement of Litchfield, N. H., although he did not remove his family thither. He married in Reading, 1707, Susanna Parker, of that place, and probably four of their children were born there. Children: (1) Joseph, b. 1708; grad. at Harvard College, 1735, and studied for the ministry but probably was never ordained. Ac- cording to the supposition of Eaton in his Genealogy of the Reading families, he m. Ruth Bancroft, 1739, and had one son, Joseph. He d. in Westford, 1745, aged 37. (2) Thomas, b. 1709; d. 1732. He was a soldier-this is well attested- and, probably, he is the Timothy Underwood, whose name appears in the list of Capt. Joshua Parker's company who served from July 5, 1777, to January 1, 1778. There are some things that indicate his removal to Ashby. He married and had, it is said, a family of seven daughters. (7) Susanna, b. 1762; m. John Moore.
