For a condensed report of the expenditures. see page 62.

The population of the town is estimated at 5.600. The valna- tion of real and personal property for 1900 is $4,476.809, as compared with $4,202.327 for the previous year. an increase of $274.482. An increase of so large an amount cannot be expected every year. and while the tax rate was reduced from $19.50 per $1.000 in 1899 to $18 in 1900. it will not be possible to further reduce this rate unless the regular appropriations are made at the lowest amount possible, after a careful consideration of the growth of the town and the increased amounts required thereby. If our present prosperity is to be maintained. all new subjects involving any considerable expenditure of money should be care- fully considered.

HIGHWAYS.

The town is now well equipped, and in good condition for the building of macadam roads. but with the question of a system of sewerage now being considered by a committee. we do not recom- mend any appropriation for the current year. The question of concrete cross walks, also, can for the same reason. perhaps. be «lelayed for a year or two. except in some important places.

NEPONSET AND CROSS STREETS.

We shall ask for an appropriation for the grading of these streets. so that they may be put in a fair condition after the

67

electric railway has been completed. and for the payment of land damage, the County Commissioners requiring the town in the first instance to pay said damage.

NORWOOD, CANTON AND SHARON STREET RAILWAY COMPANY.

This company has petitioned during the year for two exten- sions of the time in which it was required to complete its railway, both of which were granted, and it now has until May 1, 1901, in which to comply with the order of location as granted Oct. 12, 1899. The Company has paid to the Town Treasurer the sun of $2,500 and has deposited in the treasury the sum of $1.000, required as a forfeit under the original franchise.

LIGHTING STREETS.

The contract for street lighting with the Norwood Gas Light Company expires Aug. 1. 1901, and your attention is hereby called to that subject and we trust that it will receive your care- ful consideration.
