REPORT OF INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Report of COMMITTEE FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT Town of Norwood
The Committee for Industrial Development of the Town of Norwood which has functioned continuously for the past two and one-half years hereby tenders its first public report. The Committee was organized in the summer of 1950, acting on the authority of the selectmen.
The organization of the Committee is patterned along the sound principles and structure of any good business, with an executive head, or chairman, an executive committee called a steering committee, and a board of directors composed of the steering committee and chairmen of the subcommittees. The detail of the work is divided up among the usual business departments represented by subcommittees of finance, statistics, publicity, sales, and so forth. The general committee furnishes the personnel pool and functions as the stockholders of an ordinary business.
The primary and permanent program of the Committee is to interest the desirable kind of new industries in coming to Norwood, and to preserve and assist those industries which we now have. In doing so, unemployment is minimized and an everincreasing tax revenue is assured for the town.
The Committee has accumulated in its files, available for any good purpose, a wealth of statistics and factual information relating to the town which has never before been studied and coordinated in such detail. This information is dis- seminated wherever it will do the most good. An attractive folder, advertising Norwood as a desirable place for business or home has been prepared and dis- tributed, and a new brochure, revised and brought up to date, is now in the printer's hands.
Contact is maintained with the Massachusetts Industrial Commission, the New England Council, the Boston Chamber of Commerce, and Industrial Department of the New Haven Railroad, and other agencies interested in working for the healthy industrial growth of Massachusetts communities.
Locally the Committee cooperates closely with the selectmen, the engineering department, the planning board, the board of assessors, and the Chamber of Com- merce of the town on all industrial problems or developments.
For a snapshot of the type of activity engaged in by this committee in its efforts to serve the best interests of the town, brief mention might be made of the following more obvious examples.
The tannery situation-Contacts with Armour and Co., real estate agencies, potential buyers, recruiting small business enterprises to utilize vacant tannery property.
Norwood Press-Conference with management and labor, efforts to solve mutual problems, to interest new purchaser, etc.

TOWN OF NORWOOD
Cooperation with Control Engineering to help establish them in Norwood in a new plant at Neponset Street and Route 1.
Work with Francis H. Leggett and Co., resulting in the new plant adjacent to the Nowood freight station.
Dealing with the Neilson Pattern Works for the construction of a new factory adjacent to the Norwood Press property.
Cooperation with Laminated Sheet Products-new plant just completed off Route I and Neponset Street.
Conferences with Factory Mutual relative to their expansion problems.
The accomplishments and efforts of the Committee for Industrial Development over a period of two and one-half years have resulted in minimum expense to the town. During this period a total of $1,100 has been appropriated for the use of this Committee, and $344.37 was turned back unspent at the end of 1952, leaving the modest sum of $755.63 for expenses. During this same period largely or partly through the efforts of the Committee more than one and one-half million dollars in new construction for industry has been spent or committed in Norwood, which might well have gone elsewhere. From this the Town of Norwood will realize a worthwhile additional tax revenue, new citizens, new taxable private property, new business for local merchants, and a considerable gain in employment.
We believe that the Committee for Industrial Development fills an important need in this community and that its influence is bound to become broader and more effective as time goes on.
C. LOTHROP RICH, Chairman
Committee for Industrial Development
