Cemetery Commissioners.
REPORT OF CEMETERY COMMISSIONERS.
The annual appropriation for care of cemeteries has been care- fully expended, and the general appearance of the cemeteries indi- cates that there is a slow but steady increase of interest by owners and proprietors for the better care and appearance of their lots. This certainly is an encouraging feature.
During the year the town has received an additional bequest of one hundred dollars for perpetual care of lot, making seven funds now in the town's treasury for this purpose. Your commissioners earnestly recommend all proprietors to make such provision for perpetual care of their lots.
The work on the extension of the North Cemetery has progressed favorably. The rougher part of the work in carrying forward the plans adopted, by the removal of trees and stumps, laying out the avenues and paths, is well advanced and bespeaks the ultimate attractiveness of the place.

REPORT OF PUBLIC LIBRARY TRUSTEES.
The most notable feature of the administration of the Library during the last year has been the installation of the Branch Library and Reading Room at Cochituate. By vote of the town at the annual meeting held March 25, 1907, $1,000 was appropriated for this purpose, the amount being placed in the hands of the Library Trustees for expenditure at their discretion.
The first action of the Trustees was to appoint a committee to ascertain the wishes of the citizens of Cochituate in regard to the proposed Reading Room and to formulate plans for its establish- ment and maintenance. This committee reported interviews with citizens, notably the Executive Committee of the Men's Union, and considered several eligible locations, finally recommending that the store formerly occupied by Mr. N. R. Gerald on Main Street, then available for rental, be secured. The committee suggested that an Assistant Librarian be employed, that the room be comfortably and attractively fitted up, that it be supplied with a liberal assortment of current periodicals, reference books, a dictionary, a set of standard encyclopædias, and that a certain number of books of a general character be purchased and placed upon shelves, as the nucleus of a larger collection. It was further suggested that the room be open Wednesdays and Saturdays, afternoon and evening, and Thursdays in the evening, during the summer, and every evening during the winter, from October 1st to April 1st.
The provisions of this report were all adopted by the Trustees. Seventeen periodicals were subscribed for and some two hundred and fifty volumes purchased.
The Reading Room was opened to the public on July 10. The
50

use of the room has shown a steady increase, and the Trustees believe it to be satisfactorily serving its excellent purposes.
The Superintendent of Schools has communicated with the Library Trustees during the year, suggesting lists of books to be added to the Library which would be of value in connection with the school work. Such co-operation with the schools is very desirable. Apart from the benefits accruing to the schools, the habit of using the Library by the rising generation is inculcated, which is no unimportant feature of a comprehensive modern education.
The Trustees are glad to receive suggestions of books desired by any of the townspeople, and to add them to the Library if considered suitable.
The Annual Report of the Librarian to the Trustees is sub- mitted herewith.
