Board of Health.

REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH.

The Board of Health submits the following report for the year ending February 28, 1906 :

CONTAGIOUS DISEASES.

Typhoid Fever, 2 cases. Chicken Pox, 6 cases. Measles occurring not reported.

MALARIA.

Malaria has always been prevalent in Wayland and Cochituate, and up to the present year no prophylactic measures were em- ployed to prevent its occurrence.

Last April the Board consulted with officers of the Brookline Board of Health, and decided to employ their method of petrolizing stagnant pools of water, of which Wayland and Cochituate have several.

Apparatus was procured and mosquito oil, at small expense, and periodical visits were made throughout the breeding season, and oil sprayed over the surface of pools.

The result has been that very few cases of malaria have ap- peared during the past season compared with preceding years.

The Board of Health intends to follow the same method the com- ing year, and asks that individuals assist by keeping their premises free from stagnant water, as occurring in empty preserve cans, bot- tles, broken crockery and privy vaults, which breed mosquitoes.

GARBAGE, VAULTS, SEWAGE.

The Board of Health suggests that the town make some arrange- ments, for the more frequent and thorough removal of garbage, ashes and vault contents, and the rapid filling in of pond holes.

Water Works.

REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE WAYLAND WATER WORKS.

GENTLEMEN :-

It was very dry last summer and the fall of water for year was way below the average, but the Pond did not fall at any time more than fifteen inches below high water mark. About the fifteenth of November the water developed a very peculiar taste. We applied to the State Board of Health at once to find out what the trouble was, and they came out and examined the Pond and took several samples of water, and in a few days sent us the following letter :

BOSTON, November 15, 1905.

MR. H. G. DUDLEY,

Superintendent Wayland Water Works. DEAR SIR :

In response to your request I have caused the water of the Way- land reservoir to be examined, and find that it contains a large number of the microscopic organism Uroglena, which has fre- quently caused trouble from disagreeable tastes and odors in other ponds and reservoirs. The cause of its presence in waters is not known, nor do we know of any safe method of removing it under the circumstances. It is not known that water containing such or- ganisms is injurious to health if used for drinking.

Yours truly,

X. H. GOODNOUGH, Chief Engineer State Board of Health.

I would say that the water is examined every two months by the State Board of Health.
