AUDITOR'S REPORT.
WAYLAND, March 17, 1906.
The accounts of the financial officers have been examined and found correct.
Soon after the death of the late Tax Collector, Henry F. Lee, his books and accounts were examined by the Auditor. Mr. Lee be- came Collector in the spring of 1900, and portions of the taxes of 1895-1899, inclusive, and the taxes of 1900 and 1901, were in- cluded in the investigation. The Auditor presented his findings to the Selectmen, showing that the estate of the late Collector was in- debted to the town to the amount of $688.77, largely for taxes and interest collected since March 1, 1905.

REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
To the Citizens of the Town of Wayland :
While it is our duty to make annually a detailed report of our public schools, containing such suggestions and information as we may think necessary to promote their interests, we do not deem it important to make it so elabo- rate as we otherwise might were it not that the report of the Superintendent is also published with the Town Report, giving in detail all matters relating to the schools.
The condition of the schools in general is good, the work done by the teachers in the various grades excellent, the relations between teachers and pupils are pleasant, and the pupils seem happy and interested in their work. We think this satisfactory result is due to our having an excellent corps of teachers, all of whom are earnest and sincere in their efforts to make school life agreeable and improving to their pupils.
The town employs at the present time eighteen teachers, including supervisors of music, drawing, stenography and typewriting. Of these, eight are new the present year. Certain changes are sure to occur during a year on account of resignation or dismissal, but chiefly through resignation to accept a larger salary elsewhere.

Town of Wayland.
The principals of the High School and of the Cochituate Grammar School resigned to accept more lucrative positions.
It seemed advisable to all the members of the Com- mittee to make one change, and to the majority of the Committee another, so that the beginning of the winter term, January 1, 1906, found us with an entirely new corps of teachers in the High School. We have no hesi- tancy in saying that we believe that the school was never better equipped in its teaching force than at the present time, and that every effort should be made to retain these teachers, for, as a rule, any teacher can do better work the second year than the first. It therefore seems to us that it is a better policy to keep good teachers, even by paying higher salaries, than to let our schools be made training schools from which neighboring cities and towns may take them after they have shown their capabilities here. We wish to emphasize this point. Good teachers should be kept as long as possible, even if the salary limit must be raised ; otherwise the work of the schools will be uncertain and often unsatisfactory. On February the second last the resignation of Mr. Corlew as Superintendent was received, and the joint committee met on February the seventeenth and elected Mr. S. C. Hutchinson of Dighton to fill the vacancy.
We desire again to call to your attention the need of a new school building in Cochituate. This need is generally known, and as generally conceded. In our opinion it would be unwise to attempt to fix over the present building, as it would require a large expenditure of money, and in the end would not be satisfactory. If a new building is to be erected, it should be on a new site, and large enough to

accommodate all of the pupils from both the Lokerville and Cochituate schools.
We wish to express our appreciation of the earnest work of Mr. Corlew and our teachers.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.
To the School Committee of Wayland:
Gentlemen :- I have the honor to submit the eighth annual report since the formation of the Union District.
BUILDINGS.
The school building at the Centre is thoroughly renovated and repaired each year by a citizen tax-payer of this town. The condition of the building at Cochituate and Lokerville is too well known to need any words from me. It is to be hoped that in the near future the town will take action looking to the erection of a new building.
SPELLING.
For a number of years the spelling of pupils in many sec- tions of the country has been quite severely criticized and justly so. This resulted in an investigation being started to determine the cause or causes for such a state of affairs.
The most of these were made at Sioux City, Iowa, and the School of Pedagogy, New York University, New York City. As a result of the study of the conclusions reached at these places the following plan was instituted nearly a year ago in all the schools in the Union District of Wayland, Sudbury and Dover.
A lesson of five words was assigned and studied by teacher and pupils orally, pronouncing each syllable as it is spelled. After a careful study of these words they are spelled orally, paus-

ing after each syllable but not pronouncing it. The same words are then written by the pupils and they are practiced in using them correctly in sentences. This is done four days in the week and on Friday the twenty words so learned are thoroughly re- viewed, particular stress being put on their correct usage. The teachers report gratifying results. It may seem that twenty words a week are too few, but beginning with the second year and continuing through the remaining eight grades, counting thirty-seven weeks to the year, the pupils will learn to spell and use five thousand nine hundred and twenty words, a vocabulary larger than that used by a very large majority of the people of this land. It has been found out that very many pupils are unable to pronounce words because of their inability to divide them into syllables.
