To the citizens of the Town, we express appreciation of continuing staunch support of the school program; and to the members of the School Department staff we express gratitude for the faithful, intelligent labors which have merited and won that support.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, WAYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS

Pupils and Schools

School opened in September with a record enrollment in both the elementary and high schools. By the end of the month a total of 1,836 students were enrolled, an increase of 232 pupils over a year ago, and an increase of 605 or better than 49 percent in five years. More signi- ficant is the fact that slightly over 38 percent of the increase of the past five years took place during the past year. Fortunately both the new Claypit Hill and Loker elementary schools were ready to receive pupils in September.

It seems certain that your schools will continuue a rapid rate of growth, and it is imperative that the building program move forward on schedule. There is no doubt but that a new high school should be ready for occupancy by the fall of 1960 at the latest, for all schools will be operating far above capacity by that date.

Our Teachers

We have 99 teachers including five principals, of whom 29 came to work with us this year. Of these, 15 represent additions to the staff and 14 are replacements to the existing staff. The Superintendent is proud of the excellence of the teaching staff. It is a devoted group of educators who will provide your boys and girls with superior educa- tional opportunities.

Wayland's concern over the education of its children, the new schools which the town has provided, the standards of the school system, and the salary schedules instituted by the School Committee have materially facilitated the recruitment of fine teachers in our schools. We are conscious of the highly competitive market for capable teachers. Practically every community in the United States is faced with a sub- stantial expansion of its school faculty during the immediate years ahead. The community which maintains good salary schedules along with a desire to support good education will have an advantage in com- peting for the services of the best teachers. The quality of the teaching staff is the determining factor in the kind of education our children will receive, and never in our history has education been more necessary to our survival.
