Leverett Votes 'No' on Regional Study Committee

Fifty Leverett voters voted unanimously against sending a committee to an elementary re- gional planning board in Am- herst at a special town meeting Tuesday.

Reasons for the decision were: 1) Leverett already has excellent school facilities and curriculum and no pressure is anticipated population-wise.

According to the Leverett school census for the next five years, there is a slight decrease in anticipated enrollment.

Therefore, no construction or addition to the present building should be necessary.

2) With only two Leverett seats on a 12-member regional school committee the town would

lack control over its school. Repairs, etc., on the Leverett school might not fare too well under this setup.

3) Students might be sent to other schools.

4) Who would serve on an- other committee which would deal with elementary school af- fairs? Already the time in- involved in serving on the junior senior high regional committee is phenomenal.

It was the consensus of the voters that it would be advan- tageous to have the same ad- ministration, but that this could be achieved through a union with fewer problems.

action taken at the Special Town meeting held september 7, 1962.

all members of the School Commetter were present and presented the matter contamed in the Lougoing warrant.

There was a good level of discussion of the question and many questions were asked. It was brought out that little could be gamed by this Town by having a representative on this planning board .

When the question came to vote it was practically unaiumaus against appointing a mindre of this committee from derwelt. Voted to dissolve the muting
