REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE TOWN LIBRARY.

NATHAN W. HEATH, 66 1895
CHARLES A. DEWEY, Chairman, OWEN F. CROUGHWELL, Secretary, NATHANIEL F. BLAKE, Librarian.
Nothing of special interest has occurred in the history of the Town Library during the past year. About the usual amount of money has been spent in buying new books. Our means have always been somewhat limited, and the number of volumes has not increased so rapidly as in some other libraries. Yet every year has seen an increase, and the Trustees have endeavored, to see that the money appropriated by the Town was carefully and wisely expended.
More than twelve years have now elapsed since the last gen- eral catalogue was issued. At that time the number of volumes in our library was 5915, while at the present time it is 8879. A meagre and unsatisfactory supplement was published indeed in 1887, but for several years past the need of a new catalogue has grown more and more pressing.
It is surely needless to urge the vital importance of a good catalogue to enable the patrons of the library to reap the full benefit of the institution. Without such aid most people will not take the trouble to find out what treasures are stored away on our shelves. We all know its help is indispensable.
The Trustees have been looking forward for some time to a new issue, and have had an additional catalogue prepared, mod- eled largely after the former one, though not quite so elaborate. While it has not the historical references of the old one, it will be a comprehensive and systematic catalogue. The Trustees en- trusted the important work of preparation to Mr. N. F. Blake, Librarian, and he has devoted much time, for a moderate com-
39
pensation, to perfect the same, and we trust it will prove entirely satisfactory to the public. That work at least has been done and paid for.
As no regular catalogue has been issued since 1881, and the manuscript for the new one is now ready for the printer, we hope the Town will be willing to appropriate money enough to pay for the printing. With that in view, at a meeting of the Trustees holden on the tenth day of February, it was voted that . we ask for an appropriation of $900 for the benefit of the library for the year ensuing.
CHARLES A. DEWEY, Chairman.
